  1. Hi all,

I have recently been optimizing my laptop for better performance. At the onset, I reinstalled Windows (Vista Business 32bit) sans bloatware using two partitions, planning to put the OS and programs on the C:/ partition and all data on the D:/ partition.

I noticed that I only had the option for giving the C:/ partition 60% of my 160GB drive. I figured this must have been necessary, but this turned out to be far from the case. The partition is not even half full, and I don't plan to install too many new programs in the future, maybe 5-10GB more at the most, so I don't need 40GB of free space.

I wanted to reduce the drive in size by about 25% and give this space to the D:/ drive. Moving the space to unallocated space was easy, but I can't get it added to the D:/ drive via any of the Windows methods. I have downloaded a program called BootIt Next Generation, but I'm having trouble figuring it out.

Before I do anything that will destroy my system, do any of you have any advice? Oh, and yes, my D:/ partition is backed up.

  2. Won't matter anyway. Currently, Russia has a mixed (i.e., presidential and parliamentary) system, and the PM is no more than a figurehead. Putin's party has an overwhelming majority in the parliament, so he will probably just become the PM and have all the power transferred to himself again, making the president a figurehead.

  3. Yeah, this is just another thing for the MCs to put on their r?sum?s so that their respective electorates will be even more inclined to vote them in than they already are (99% incumbency rate in the House). The fact that the vast majority of this country is Christian has absolutely no bearing on whether or not this is OK -- it makes sense from a political standpoint, but not a legislative standpoint (obviously). Since House members are re-elected every two years, they constantly have to worry about keeping the electorate happy, and so they pass this sort of crap all the time. It will probably stew in the Senate for awhile since it's not quite as important for them, what with their six-year terms. What really scares me is some of the bill's original text, which has been since nixed:

"Whereas identify themselves as those who believe in the salvation from sin offered to them through the sacrifice of their savior, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and who, out of gratitude for the gift of salvation, commit themselves to living their lives in accordance with the teachings of the Holy Bible;Whereas Christians Christians and Christianity have contributed greatly to the development of western civilization;"

    :o

Oh, and as far as unfortunate truncation goes, check out the title of this thread on the recent thread list on the right. ;D

  4. Call it what it is. The generation Y types who were taught that you can never fail, and you

are the only one who matters, and who want it NOW.

Hold on to your hats, because it is going to get worse. Much worse.

I've been interviewing for IT types. All i'm getting is gen Y idiots. People who have never written

a single line of code, yet want a starting salary of $100k plus 5 weeks of vacation plus flex time

    plus plus plus.

I've put these candidates in front of a machine with visual studio on it, and told them to make

the one line C program "hello world". Not a single person has been able to do it yet.

    Give me a fucking break.

Wow, I am a social science major and even I can do that (had a programming class in high school). Pretty pathetic. Good luck with your search.

  5. Sweet, when you figure society out let me know. Most of what I observe and read in the papers, etc. just make me go :doghuh:

I've also been amused about the same thing with one-hit wonder bands and a year later seeing stacks of cut LPs or the guy behind the record exchange counter saying No, I don't need another copy of that. On the other hand it's not that much different than trendy clothes etc.

    Mmmbop!

  6. ph0rk and boomana -- exactly.

A wiki would solve the reference aspect that Tyll describes, but wouldn't solve the "knows just enough to be dangerous" types. I mean, let's say I were just starting out -- I happen to know that my tastes differ from others, and I know what's important to me, and what's not -- is a wiki going to be able to tell me what has the most straightforward frequency response, the best prat, handles busy music well, but I couldn't care less about soundstaging and imaging? No, only if someone else who cares about those same things happens to post those same things. I'm going to have to ask someone more experienced about that. Hey, look, they talk a lot in this "head-fi" forum, I'll just go in there, pour a cold one, and chat with the locals.

The funny thing is, it works in real life, too. Haven't you ever just chatted someone up, just because they seem to know a thing or two in your topic area -- say, standing in line waiting for concert tickets ("dude, you should totally check them out, they sound exactly like Gabriel-era Genesis")? Or responded to a conversation to which you were a stranger ("I forget whether it was the Moody Blues or Pink Floyd...I need to find out, because I was told I really need to hear the rest of the album")?

    So...why not?

Other than it annoys the locals. But the people who run the tourist traps like tourists. So...there ya go.

There's really nothing to solve there. If all the questions posted were like yours, we wouldn't be having this discussion.
