  1. Oh, stereo direct, like Mapleshade records are famous for?  I was never able to successfully record that way, though I tried.  I always made it sound muffled and distant, found myself straining to listen.  I suspect the choice of mic has a lot to do with it.

I'd never heard of Mapleshade, but I see on their about page they "...use no add-on EQ, reverb or noise reduction electronics. Our recordings are made with only 2 to 4 microphones and no cables longer than 20 feet."

That's true for this particular recording too. But yeah, you need great circumstances for that to work - instrument, room, mics, it all needs to work together.

  2. Douglas, that is a really beautiful recording, very impressive.  Reminds me a lot of the ECM recordings I have and some of the M A Recordings as well.  Very nice presence and arrangement, thanks for sharing.

Thanks for those comments. It's so nice to hear people are enjoying the music.

I'd never come across MA Recordings before - thanks for that! Listening now to some mp3 clips... I'm usually pretty suspicious of so-called audiophile record labels, but what I'm hearing sounds very nice.

  3. All I can say about Stax is this...

1.) If a headphone sounds good enough for you to put up with fart noises every time you adjust the headband or move your jaw, then it must be good.

2.) If a headphone sounds good enough for you to put up with annoying proprietary powering and connectors, then it must be good.

In all seriousness, though, for a couple of years I owned the Stax SR-007 and SRM-007t and I can honestly say they were far and away the best headphones I ever listened to (before or since). I hear people occasionally taking about the "lack of bass", or a "soft" sound. For me, neither of these things were true. They were incredibly natural sounding, with extended but not exaggerated highs and lows.

It's been a while since I have listened to high end headphones. If things have improved and we now have headphones which sound better than the 007, then I think the headphone-loving community should feel very, very lucky!

  4. He just joined here, too.

heh, just noticed he's the post before me

Definitely welcome, your album is awesome.  Not just the fidelity (which is also awesome) but also the soul.

I'm a big fan of real stereo recordings.  I miss my old schoeps rig.  I'm going to get some of those line audio mics (tho I'm trying to get one of the switchable mics).

    Thanks very much!

Yes, I've been making stereo pair recordings for several years now, and when it works, it *really* works. The CM3s are a real bargain. I don't feel like I miss anything compared to the Schoeps. But, as you know, the Schoeps have interchangeable capsules, which allows for a bit more flexibility.

As for what I'm listening to...

    Outrageously good music and playing!

  5. Hi, Douglas, welcome to the forum.  I feel the need to put this out there -- I love your and Mira's approach to arranging.

And:  sweet, it's a binaural recording?  I hadn't listened to it on headphones yet.  (Sorry.)

Thanks for the welcome and complements! Wow, my lowly 2 posts certainly pales in comparison to you almighty 30,395! Wow, that's a lot of text!

Not binaural, no. I just meant that there were only two microphones used. But, I'd love to record something with the Neumann Fritz head one day.

  6.

My Google Analytics brought me here. Glad you're enjoying the recording! I recorded it with just a single stereo pair... one for each ear ;)

This is my first time here, but it seems like a really active community! So, who recognises the headphones used on the recording session in this pic: http://elswhr.co/blog/photos-from-lumiere-recording-session - this is probably one of the few forums where I could expect 100 correct answers! Ha ha!

If only I still had my Stax Omega - I bet this album would sound gorgeous on those...
