I'd never heard of Mapleshade, but I see on their about page they "...use no add-on EQ, reverb or noise reduction electronics. Our recordings are made with only 2 to 4 microphones and no cables longer than 20 feet." That's true for this particular recording too. But yeah, you need great circumstances for that to work - instrument, room, mics, it all needs to work together.

Thanks for those comments. It's so nice to hear people are enjoying the music. I'd never come across MA Recordings before - thanks for that! Listening now to some mp3 clips... I'm usually pretty suspicious of so-called audiophile record labels, but what I'm hearing sounds very nice.

All I can say about Stax is this... 1.) If a headphone sounds good enough for you to put up with fart noises every time you adjust the headband or move your jaw, then it must be good. 2.) If a headphone sounds good enough for you to put up with annoying proprietary powering and connectors, then it must be good. In all seriousness, though, for a couple of years I owned the Stax SR-007 and SRM-007t and I can honestly say they were far and away the best headphones I ever listened to (before or since). I hear people occasionally taking about the "lack of bass", or a "soft" sound. For me, neither of these things were true. They were incredibly natural sounding, with extended but not exaggerated highs and lows. It's been a while since I have listened to high end headphones. If things have improved and we now have headphones which sound better than the 007, then I think the headphone-loving community should feel very, very lucky!

Thanks very much! Yes, I've been making stereo pair recordings for several years now, and when it works, it *really* works. The CM3s are a real bargain. I don't feel like I miss anything compared to the Schoeps. But, as you know, the Schoeps have interchangeable capsules, which allows for a bit more flexibility.
