  1. Heh, well this would be as a temporary home solution, not as some kind of extra thing. I know you like to have several different home rigs; I don't. Anyways, I already have a good home DAC and a good portable DAC, so I'm covered on the source front. ;)

Hilariously enough, I just came home from the Norcal meet having borrowed Icarium's CK2III and found a NoNoNoNoNoNo-built CTH waiting at my doorstep. But can't listen now, I gotta hit the gym. My lunch consisted of 2 double-doubles, animal fries, and a choco shake. Fuck me. :palm:

How did it work out for you? Which one of the two did you like more and why?

  2. My younger brother told me about some special marketing price for the upgrade versions only, don't know if any of you are interested. It's only when you pre-order though (excerpt follows):

    Preorder Windows 7 cheaply

In select markets, Microsoft is offering its customers the ability to preorder Windows 7 upgrade versions at a significantly reduced price. This is easily the most aggressive pricing Microsoft has ever offered for Windows. The low preorder price will vary per country:

[*]US: Windows 7 Home Premium ($49.99) and Windows 7 Professional ($99.99)

[*]Canada: Windows 7 Home Premium ($64.99) and Windows 7 Professional ($124.99)

[*]Japan: Windows 7 Home Premium (

  3. Nate, could you plan on doing a couple/few snip and re-terminations? I will PM you with a couple questions in that regard.

So, the few things I can say pursuant to my NDAs with TTVJ are:

    1. Todd hopes the run of HF-2 available at CJ09 will be in the order of 20 pairs, which he has to bring with him or ship there, and we all know what supposedly happened with a big box of HD800s in Boston... The number of cans available will not be large, plus he has to outfit his room at the meet.

    2. Whether you think it is celebrity status or not, there were a number of pairs reserved for national meet organizers if they choose to buy them, so the 20 possibly available will not start with order no. 1 on Friday. Beyond that, I assume they will be given to the early ordering people who are present.

    3. They will ship with regular bowl pads and Todd plans to bring flats for sale at CanJam.

    4. The type of cans and the details other than that are going to be kept quiet until the unveiling on Saturday, May 30 at CJ09. I can say, however, that it is not the HF-1 with a new number on it.

    5. Maybe grawk got to him early enough, but Todd basically said it is too difficult to take special orders for serial numbers.

    Should be good times.

From what you know, without saying too much, should I keep my accidental order (TTVJ) for the Grado Jumbo pads or not? If they ARE similar to PS1000 and they do not have a large treble spike, they "might" work with them. I rather not pay another shipping cost if we find out later that they are optimized for the bowl pads and/or the jumbo pads.

The reason I would want the Jumbo pads is for a larger soundstage/airier sound but mainly for comfort.

  4. So, you do not know if you like the RS1, but you're already thinking about getting the supposed to be (I've not heard the vintage) top of the line RS1? Doesn't they sell for over $1k, which is double that of a used "new" pair.

To the people who have heard and compared both vintage and newer RS1:

    a. Are the differences so large that a person could like the vintage RS1, while at the same time not like the new RS1?

    b. Or is the vintage RS1 still an RS1, while slightly better than new version.

If case a. is true, it does make sense to go for the vintage unheard, but if case b. is true, it might be better to just get a used pair new RS1 first to hear if they are at all likeable.

    -----------------------------------------

I did have the MS2i, but sold them shortly after I got the RS1 (new buttonless). I really did like the MS2i, but the effortless and refined sound of the RS1 won. I do not find the RS1 to have that much more treble than what the MS2i did, I still find them (RS1) smooth like the MS2i. I might even say that the MS2i is more aggressive than RS1, and spoon-feeds you the sound, while RS1 plays it effortless.

I do think I like the more neutral soundsignature of the MS2i better than the RS1, but there is no question that the RS1 is in a higher tier. The soundstage is bigger, air between instruments is better and more deep bass (impression without real comparison).

I use bowls mostly. Flats seem to make them even smoother and more laid back.

  5. A single 18V adapter will not work. For practical reasons (see so many "fail" reasons), two 9V adapters will not work either, unless they are floating (the - not tied to ground). You would have to tie the + of one adapter to the - of the other and take the ground at this point... if the adapters are tied to ground, they are not going to like this...See above, but IMHO no. Also, you would want linear regulated AC-DC adapters, so their price is higher that what you are probably looking at.

    Thanks for the answer.

I guess this is too complicated for me yet. I will use rechargeables instead.

    Really appreciate all the help.

  6. Thanks for all the answers. Maybe it should be much easier to use two 9V regulated AC adapters instead of one 18V. A regulated 9V isn't very expensive either.

this project has so much "fail" potential, given the "questions" asked...

Hence why I'm asking in advance. I want to get it right so nothing bad happens.

just use rechargeable batteries and be done with it.

If everything else fails, I will fall back to rechargables. The cost for good recharchable and and a good charger is higher than for two 9V regulated AC adapters. I do not know if what the soundquality will be when using good rechargables versus cheap AC adapters though.

    Follow up question:

    8. Is using two regulated 9V AC adapters the best/easiest/cheapest/safest way to achieve what I want?

  7. I will soon have an RA1 for my RS1. It will be a pain to switch batteries every now and then though.

I would like an AC adapter with 9V connectors to supply the unit with power.

    1. What do I need to look for in that AC adapter?

    2. Would 9V be enough? Since the RA1 uses two 9V batteries, would I have to use one 18V adapter? I think the batteries are in parallell in the RA1 but I'm not sure. If they are would 9V be enough?

    3. Is it okey to split the adapter output cable into two 9V connectors, or would I have to have two AC adaptors?

    4. How much mAh does it have to have to be enough for the RA1?

    5. I read somewhere that it have to be regulated, is that true?

    6. Is this a good plan, or will a low cost AC adapter make the sound very bad?

    7. If the answer to 6 is "yes", what could I possibly do to be able to not have to use battery power? Is there a simple DIY AC adapter which I could build for this purpose?

    Thanks

  8. DT880 has got it's qualities.

The bass in DT880 and DT990 is also different. I would not at all describe the DT880 05 as bass light, neutral but not light.

The bass is very different in more ways than just thump between dt880 and 990. I feel that DT880 has more texture. Sometimes, the bass on dt880 has got so much texture that I get a WOW feeling. It's very hard to describe the it. A thunderstorm can sound much more real with dt880 than dt990.

I feel that the texture of the bass in dt880 often wins over the thump of dt990. Sometimes though I just need thump, and thats what dt990 is for.

When a record is basslight, the dt880 will not enhance it. When a recording is neutral or bassheavy, dt880 does in no way miss bass.
