  1. XTC_Mummer.jpg

As is my want when I get into a band, when I liked a few XTC tracks I heard, I went and bought their whole catalogue (the japanese mini lp jobbies even!). (btw i am one of these wackos who refuses to own any sort of "greatest hits" compilation...) This was probably in 2002 or so. For some reason, this album never grabbed me until this the very end of last year. Not sure why I kept trying but I'm glad I did!

  2. I thought so :)

The guys at Twisted Pear are big proponents of digital volume control with the new Sabre 32 chip. They argue that the wide data path and high DNR allows much better attenuation than what people are used to from digital devices.

I'm not familiar with how the Sabre 32 chip works but indeed there are ways to do volume control in the digital domain without adversely affecting resolution, however it will not be perfect and would not pass DTS or HDCD encoding... as an advanced digital volume control solution doesn't apply to what deepak has at hand at the moment, I have been avoiding this theoretical discussion in order to ram the point home that simple digital volume manipulation results in decreased resolution by throwing away bits.
  3. I may be on the wrong track here by misunderstanding something that I have read...... but what if you run 16-bit material through a 24-bit or higher DAC, and at 0dBFS output you just fill the 8 bottom bits up with zeroes?
Correct. The "top" 16-bits are "bit-perfect" and the "bottom" 8 are inactive. Full 16-bit resolution is maintained.
  4. Very interesting. One of my DACs is HDCD equipped. Any suggestion for playing back HDCD material (and keeping the HDCD flag intact) with Windows? IIRC WMP9 (or 10) used to be able to do it.
WMP 9/10 tried to do HDCD decoding internally, therefore would NOT pass HDCD information on to a DAC. If you are using Foobar and can pass the "DTS" test, you'll output HDCD information correctly.
I believe with the M-Audio Transit the default drivers are already bit perfect once you select "M-Audio Transit" as the output device in Foobar2000. The DTS pass through test to a HT receiver confirms this and ouputs a clean signal rather than just noise.
In that case, it sounds like you are outputting bit-perfect and will be able to light the HDCD light on a HDCD-equipped DAC.
    Which raises the next question:

Can you have bit perfect CDPs with varying digital output levels?

No. Altering the volume level in the digital domain by definition alters the bitstream.
  5. The two things you are looking for from a digital transport are:

    a) low, clean jitter

    B) bit-perfect output

By altering the volume (or applying any sort of EQ, or other processing), you are throwing B out the window. Most simple digital volume controls basically throw away information (starting with the "least significant") in order to reduce the level. In fact, on Windows, if you don't use ASIO to output from your player (foobar, etc) straight into your output device (fw/usb interface, sound card, whatever), Windows' built in audio subsystem (kmixer) will jack around with the bits and throw B out the window.

One fun experiment is to try playing a lossless rip of a HDCD-encoded track into a HDCD-equipped DAC. You'll notice that the moment you play with the volume on the digital source, the HDCD light on the DAC goes out. Since HDCD encoding lies in the "least significant" portion of the digital bitstream, it's the first to go...

On another note, bit-perfect is bit-perfect. The majority of CD transports output bit-perfect, which is the same as a sound card or Squeezebox outputting bit-perfect. If a digital source is not true to the ones and zeros of the source material, it isn't bit-perfect.

Interestingly, though on a bit of a tangent, prior to algorithms such as Apogee's marvelous UV22, even in the analog-digital converting process (i.e. going from a 2 track analog tape master to a DAT tape or other digital format for digital distribution), you really had to keep the signal level as high as possible without going "over" digital 0 in order to achieve maximum resolution from the redbook-required 16 bits. If you don't feed the ADC a hot enough level, you'll never use all 16 bits available. Even with the help of UV22 adding "inaudible" noise to keep more bits in the game, ideally you still want your digital master to peak at digital 0 and not go over, which results in clipping. UV22 means you can get a fair amount more resolution during quiet passages, allowing for greater usable dynamic range. I actually think that 16/44.1 Done Right is Not That Bad...

  6. hehe, very richmond hill, one of the few neighbourhoods in canada that rivals where i grew up when it comes to haughty-taughty-ness: west vancouver (specifically caufeild... and before all you Vancouverites start calling me rich boy, we were the one not-rich family, long story...)

you are telling me a frigging chain has best burgers in canada, eh? that is one lofty claim my friend! hopefully i will have time to verify... i am probably going to be in tee-dot on business in a little over a week pulling a couple of all-nighters totally revamping a client's network at their eaton center store, might have to see if i can get up there to try that out and see how it compares to my Vancouver favourites (#1 - moderne burger, #2 - splitz grill, both of which also have amazing fries and shakes) which will be EXTREMELY hard to top. assume you guys went to the jefferson square one? looks like the closest to DT...

btw, poast pics of bass gear!

  7. YouTube - Play him off - Keyboard Cat - Hall and Oates LOLZ

    wow...just wow.

I suppose my taste for Monseigneur Hall's solo effort (as produced by and performed upon by Monseigneur Fripp, including a generous dollop of Frippertronics!) could be explained by my being born in '84, (Out of Touch was just hitting MTV!) meaning i didn't have to live through Hall and Oates' dizzying heights of popularity.

indeed, some of their videos were real classics.......................................................

  8. I kinda had to know if it had random bits of point-to-point wiring inside.

Ayre is in Colorado, thought maybe Charles Hansen went Mikhail! :D

Pretty sure whatever disease Mikhail has is only transmitted sexually... so we can safely conclude that it won't make it past him.
  9. Shit........... where IS that drool smiley!!?!? thanks for ripping apart your dac for me to have stroke material...

V.interesting that the USB receiving circuitry is on its own board... mayhaps something with more inputs coming or possible to hack on...

  10. Quite possibly, as it does have a bit more power. Otoh its Cd is rather higher which might make it pay even more above 200km/h in a straight line... LM engine in a standard F1 probably ideal for racing a Veyron, but not sure the LM exhaust is street legal...? I understand the quad-turbocharged Veyron really suffers in the hot desert environment and it probably should have done better. Who cares though, the Veyron is a rich German man's blown wad, the F1 is a masterpiece...

  11. Sex with animals is illegal in NJ isn't it? Disgusting to think a guy would seduce a hungry bear just to have his way with it. Is there no shame in NJ? :palm:
There was no shame in WA until late '05... linky

    Mr. Hands FTW!

Whilst damning myself here, it's nice to see Matt's Bear Who Came As Soon As He Heard on the LOL BOX...

On another note, my GF and I once mused about getting a pair of companion personalized license plates: "O RLY?" and "YA RLY!"... luckily that didn't materialize.

  12. I don't watch television and don't have cable but I have had a strange thing for Anna Paquin since the first X-Men movie... and uh, yeah. Where's that drool smiley?

  13. The only bad thing about the 1:10 time though is, nobody and nothing will ever beat it...
you might recall the Caparo T1 was in a similar league...

I really didn't like S13E01. E02 however is one of my top five TG eps, easy, and this is coming form someone who thinks they haven't done a good solid show all the way through since Season 4 or 5... only thing that let S13E02 down was some really choppy editing, particularly during the Fry interview.

I thought the teenager cars thing was hilarious! All the props in the office were hilarious and I couldn't stop laughing every time we saw Ravey Mayvey with his tunes cranked... and I'm only a few years too old to be gawking at the 17 year old girls!

That new Lambo SV thinger is the first Lamborghaudi I've liked. Don't care for the SLR...

Fry hilarious as ever, and I've had tons of mileage joking about Grindr since however have thus far resisted the urge to download...

Finally, F1 v. Veyron? Awesome! F1 even put it in its place up to 125mph or so.

Interestingly the I Love Man episode (S03E02) is probably my favourite and also has Fry on as the SIARPC... and tons of BMW content (BMW engine in the F1, w00t). Love the M1, most fun I've ever had with my pants on was driving an E30 M3, and I owned an E34 M5 (thanks to Ronin...)

  14. Only LZ album I will listen to all the way through without the coercion of being tied up...

fav LZ track is Fool in the Rain, for THAT DRUMMING!!! which brings me to a fun tangent:

when Jeff Porcaro was asked about the drum bit in Toto's Rosanna, he says he drew inspiration from Fool in the Rain, and Steely Dan's Home at Last... which is the same drumeer/beat as Babylon Sisters (the fantastic Purdie Shuffle!). Porcaro is THE MAN... a white kid drumming for Steely Dan at age 20!!?!? Holy crap. His instructional drum video is pretty fun too but a bit dry/technical... as is Donald Fagen's piano video, only even more technical... but I find it a blast to get a glimpse into the minds of master musicians like these guys.

  15. 000ae64f_medium.jpeg

this one sounds *outrageously* good... i LOVE the kitschy bass on "Lowdown". not to difficult, but so fun to play along with.

for some reason i always feel like i'm in a 70's cop show when I listen this track... or "Night By Night" from SD's _Pretzel Logic_, incidentally.

  16. Very interesting! My D1 (which was 24/96 upgraded when I bought it...) was just back at Pass having a good look-over as I have been thinking of selling it. Would love to hear a non-24/96 D1 as it is supposed to sound better for redbook... I haven't had the chance to hook the D1 up and give it a listen since I got it back as I've been away on business but it has a ton of new caps (one leaked...) and resistors, can't wait to give it a good going over.

I've been waffling over whether I should sell the D1 and SFD-2 Mk.III in preference for something more modern, or since I really don't play anything but redbook at this point, go for a SDR-2000 Pro... the Levinson No. 30.6 is mighty temping as well...

The Ayre QB-9 makes a lot of sense as I am going mostly computer now... but the Berkeley is tempting as well... Ayre has fully discrete circuitry and their wicked digital filter... Berkeley has piles of inputs and I already have a good sound card to output to it with... the Berkeley eliminates the need for a preamp though which is really appealing... anyone know how its volume control works?
