  1. Damn, too bad. Congrats on Vancouver though, one of the nicest places on planet earth.
It sure is pretty... but if my French was better I'd move back to Montreal (where I was born...) in a heartbeat. The gulf between the wealthy and the fucked in Vancouver is getting a little too silly for my tastes... plus I make pretty decent money and couldn't possibly afford to buy a place I'd enjoy living in without really overextending myself. Fuck it.
  2. Donald Fagen -- The Nightfly
Nice. Though I prefer both of Walter Becker's solo albums, this is certainly Donald Fagen's best... and better than the last two SD albums as well, which I'm just not a big fan of...
    Feist -- The Reminder
Nice. I prefer Let It Die but this is pretty good... being in Toronto presently, I've been spinning that, and these:

No excuse for this but for some reason I have yet to acquire Brendan Canning's recent effort... and while I like Kevin Drew's Spirit If, the aforementioned two BSS albums proper beat it fairly handily IMO.

Malcolm Middleton -- Into The Woods

This is lowish-fi, but I think some of you would probably dig it too.

    mmm?
We Were Promised Jetpacks -- These Four Walls

    Like it. Spiky, fun.

    Nice! Great name too.

Today, a fair whack of the Smithereens:

Green Thoughts is definitely my fav overall, despite some FANTASTIC tracks on Especially For You ("Alone at Midnight" is three and a half minutes of absolute perfection in the genre, that bridge in the middle of the song after the guitarey bit... ugh!!! so simple but SO delicious!). Curiously of these first three Smithereens albums, it took me the longest to warm up to Green Thoughts. Can't figure out why now.

I find this one a little weak compared to the first two despite some high points... "Room Without a View" particularly. Great track.

  3. A little birdie told me that some guy in California who makes some really honkin' big amplifiers with thick aluminum faceplates and massive blue gauges on the front uses these available in terminated form here. SKU you want for 6' XLRs is "GAC-4/1-06NB" (NB = Neutrik gold pin plugs, NS=Neutrik standard, couple bucks cheaper per cable)... you'll need QTY 2 for L/R, total cost will be about US$58 plus shipping...
if these cables are good enough for these guys they've gotta be good enough for your buddy to use for recording!
  4. Pass D1 - wicked fast deep tight bass with zero bloat or boom, probably killer for this genre ;)

it's fucking mental for fast kick drum shit.

really the only reason i can't bring myself to part with it is its bass performance...

  5. actually in my windows days i ran WinAMP with an asio out plugin to my m audio 2496 card. provided bit-perfect s/pdif out and worked rather well.

worst thing for me going winamp -> itunes was sorting... in my winamp days i had my folder structure organized LastName, FirstName/AlbumYear-Album Name/Track#-TrackName, and organized in winamp by folder structure, and It Was Good... in itunes i've had to spend hours and hours fucking with Sort Artist and Sort Album fields to get everything to come up in the right order on both itunes and ipod...

used to use monkey's audio for lossless on windows, and EAC to rip... using XLD to rip on MacOS and ALAC of course...

the old windows/monkey's audio/winamp setup was really good for my anal retentive obsessive compulsive tendencies... i could even rip cds to image/cue format (saved in .ape) and create .apl cue files to add to winamp :D

  6. spin your cds in your computer :)
clearly the logical choice... not sure why i haven't given in on this one yet, there isn't any good reason... stubborn-ness i guess. for a 25-year-old IT professional, i'm a total luddite... didn't even start computering my music until i got an iphone when the 3g came out... didn't have an ipod or anything before that... now no clue how i lived without...
As much as I dislike Apples as computers, they're really the way to go for audiophilia, huh? =(
won't ask why you hate them... but there is one thing that bites cock compared to Winbloze - ask someone about Audio Midi Setup.app and sampling rates...
  7. Fuck if this thing had S/PDIF in as well as USB, it'd be such a no-brainer... I'd happily pay more than $2.5k for such a thing... just can't bring myself to part from spinning CDs completely yet... fuck maybe by 2010 I'll have everything in iTunes and can go whole hog...

  8. Nice! How do you like it here? I hope you brought that D-1 with you ;). Hmm i'll have to get back to you on the most/best/coolest best guitar shop but stay posted!
Hey, not my first time here but am far from an expert on The Big Smoke. I like it here. D1 a bit much to lug on the plane :P

Will stay posted on the bass thing. I'm a huge Rickenbacker nut (have a 4003, 4001C64 and 660/12 all in JetGlo), so anywhere with Ric's will work... would love to lay my hands on some Sadowskys as well, very little in Vancouver... or groovy jazz basses... had a lot of fun playing one of those stand-up electric NS thingers last time I was in Montreal... anything that's not basic Squiers and Ibanez, really, would be fun!

Gonna try to hit up the 12th Fret, bought my Larrivee L-04R over the internets from them last year, would love to see their shop in person!

  9. oh and if you see a long-brown-haired, un-shaven (with only pathetic, schoolboy growth) freak, wearing snazzy black shoes and jeans (blue or dark grey) despite the heat, streeting a pair of SR325s, and probably playing air instruments, come say hi!

edit: just kidding about streeting the SR325s... it'll be the triple.fis.

  10. Perhaps after the garbage strike, though :P
Is that why it smells worse than usual here? :P

Just rolled in today, leaving Thursday... gonna be pulling a couple of all-nighters at TEC.

xand1x, where's the shop with the most/best/coolest bass guitars 'round these parts?
