  1. Reading that thread makes me want to kick a puppy. HF is getting more & more infected with cable voodoo freaks lately. Yeah, let's all go & slice our headphone cables in half because that extra three feet of capacitance is a killer. FFS! and breathe.

  2. Sounds like you got my DPS, and I got yours, considering they shipped the same day. It's a really simple task to flip the power module around. It did the trick with mine...and good job I checked first as running 240v into a 110v module wouldn't have been so pretty!

Edit - and I totally agree with your findings hd800 balanced blue dragon v stock SE cable. Really makes a difference, but I'm not sure how much of that is down to being balanced, or just the posh cable (mostly the former I would guess). I have a blue dragon XLR --> 1/4" adapter coming in a couple of days, so I'll be able to answer that question soon.

Oh, and I find the HD800s are being driven really well on the "low" gain setting. Putting it up at medium, let alone high, is pretty nasty to my ears. Decent listening level on "low" for me is with the volume pot around 10 or 11 o'clock.

  3. Hypothetically speaking, since I'm not giving advice in any official capacity you'd want to make sure of at least two things:

    1. That you have not used nails in tension. Nails in tension will creep over time and back their way out of most holes.

    2. That whatever screws that you have used are rated for tension loads. Lots of people like to inappropriately use drywall screws for everything and they have little to no tension value.

Basically I'd hate to see a creation like that fail, I'm a fan of function over form so I like them a lot. And what concerns me is that your floor probably moves a bit when you walk on it and that'll be what eventually causes a problem at the attachment points.

Cheers, I've sent you a PM to bore you with the details. Don't want to derail this mighty fine pr0n thread any more than I already have :) .

  4. Um, wondering if those pics (as origional and fun as they are) might be better served in a DIY section of the forum; this thread seems more for the lusty and sexy make-you-want-at-any-cost variety of speakers.

This is not to write that it's like someone stepping into a gorgeous naked woman picture gallery and uploading a picture of a hairy man butt sporting a gerber jar; well, sort of I guess

Hey Pedalhead! Welcome to Head-Case. Awesome sounding always counts.

Yeah, I do feel rather like the ugly bloke who just stepped into the Claudia Schiffer thread. Gods/mods, feel free to eject my hairy arse-speakers into the DIY forum if necessary, no hard feelings :asshat:

edit - although...there is a bloke with antlers attached to his headphones up there

  5. Trust me, just because something supports a load temporarily does not mean that it is permanently capable of doing the same thing.

Ah well, the barn's been there for 200 years & the subs have been there through a year of heavy use, I'll take my chances ;). Having said that, I'm kinda tempted to move my bikes...

  6. The structural engineer in me cringes at how those are mounted. I'd never let anyone walk under those if it was my house. Yikes.

Ha, trust me they're not going anywhere, these things have got loads more fixings than they need to stay put. I have happy memories of swinging repeatedly from them before mounting the drivers.

  7. I have now heard both the Cullen Stage IV PSA DLIII (with a headroom balanced desktop) and my stock PSA DLIII (with my ZDT and WA6), and I think both are "good enough" for me. I can't say how much better if any the modded one is because it was too much trouble to try to hook both DACs up with the same source and amp and switch between them at the recent meet 2 weekends ago, but I didn't hear anyone complain one bit about my stock one. I have to say that I am very happy with it.

Thanks a lot mate, I'm definitely edging towards the Cullen PSA DLIII/BUDA/balanced HD800s as what will hopefully be my "final" rig. Well, at least for a while anyway . At the risk of derailing the thread, I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts on the sound offered by that combo. Cheers.

  8. The only niggle I have about the UDAC is that you could get a Cullen Stage IV PS Audio DAC for a similar price, the latter of which is reportedly quite nice & "analoguey", which if true might suit the HD800s quite well. I don't fancy anything too ruthlessly transparent as a source with the HD800s as they're unforgiving enough as it is. I'm not sure what kind of sound signature the UDAC has, mind.

  9. Ok, in case anyone was dying to hear the end of the story and losing sleep over my decision, I just order a BUDA+DPS. I figure this way I get to hear something new and there is no risk with Headroom's 30 day trial! Should ship in 2-4 weeks (probably closer to 4 weeks according to the salesperson on the phone). :P

Now I just need to get rid of my Stello amp and DAC to make up for some of the loss of green.

Grats on the order. I'll probably be following quite soon I think. That combo seems to offer a lot for the

  10. Mr DHL just delivered #1563 into my eager hands. Fresh out of the box, these have a trait that I also associate with good loudspeakers...provided a decent recording, I am able to pick and follow any element or instrument within the music. Initial impressions definitely suggest a very revealing nature. Dark Side of the Moon SACD sounds fantastic, (What's the Story) Morning Glory? CD sounds bloody awful...as it does on any decent system in my experience. This is great fun, definitely one of those purchases that has me reaching into the depths of my music collection. It'll be interesting to see how they evolve in the early days & weeks.

  11. Cheers Peter, wise words. Actually I recently tried my first "tube roll" on my EAR+ and my findings were completely contrary to various opinions I've read, but then I'm kinda new to this tube malarky so it could really just be me and my dumb ears. Anyway, got a rather nice email today to say my HD800s are on the way, which means I can't afford the 50% deposit on the BA for another few weeks, conveniently giving me some time to think/agonize over the amp decision a while longer :palm:.

  12. Thanks dsavitsk, that's reassuring. I suppose I can always start out with some cheaper ones & go crazy from there. So hard for a relative amp-dummy like me to choose between all the designs out there as I don't get the opportunity to listen to a lot of kit other than my own. With this upgrade, I'm kinda thinking I may as well just go for the most expensive I can afford, from a respected builder, in the hope that I won't have to go through the dreaded upgrade process again in a couple of years. Hmm, famous last words...

  13. Hi all. I've been lurking for a while, thought I'd dip my toe & see what the water's like over here. I'm > < this close to pre-ordering a BA with Craig, but I note it ships without the 300B tubes. Being a bit of a tube dummy, I just googled 300B & the prices range from not a lot to more than a very lot. As I'm trying to put a budget together for this beast, does anyone have any thoughts on suitable tubes that'll do this amp justice? Do I really need to spend $1k+ on a pair of EAT 300Bs, or is it likely the BA will still sound awesome with something much less expensive like JJ or similar? I think some crazy expensive tubes might be the difference between getting the BA or going for something a step down in drool-ness. Cheers.
