  1. Reading that thread makes me want to kick a puppy. HF is getting more & more infected with cable voodoo freaks lately. Yeah, let's all go & slice our headphone cables in half because that extra three feet of capacitance is a killer. FFS! and breathe.
  2. Indeed it does. They're on a 4-5 week delivery at the moment. Jack assures me it'll be here in time for the UK meet in early November, so 25+ people will have an opinion on it after that )
  3. Any more reports on these? I've just ordered one with all the juicy tubes. Will be used with balanced HD800s.
  4. Sounds like you got my DPS, and I got yours, considering they shipped the same day. It's a really simple task to flip the power module around. It did the trick with mine...and good job I checked first as running 240v into a 110v module wouldn't have been so pretty! Edit - and I totally agree with your findings hd800 balanced blue dragon v stock SE cable. Really makes a difference, but I'm not sure how much of that is down to being balanced, or just the posh cable (mostly the former I would guess). I have a blue dragon XLR --> 1/4" adapter coming in a couple of days, so I'll be able to answer that question soon. Oh, and I find the HD800s are being driven really well on the "low" gain setting. Putting it up at medium, let alone high, is pretty nasty to my ears. Decent listening level on "low" for me is with the volume pot around 10 or 11 o'clock.
  5. Cheers, I've sent you a PM to bore you with the details. Don't want to derail this mighty fine pr0n thread any more than I already have .
  6. Yeah, I do feel rather like the ugly bloke who just stepped into the Claudia Schiffer thread. Gods/mods, feel free to eject my hairy arse-speakers into the DIY forum if necessary, no hard feelings edit - although...there is a bloke with antlers attached to his headphones up there
  7. Ah well, the barn's been there for 200 years & the subs have been there through a year of heavy use, I'll take my chances . Having said that, I'm kinda tempted to move my bikes...
  8. Ha, trust me they're not going anywhere, these things have got loads more fixings than they need to stay put. I have happy memories of swinging repeatedly from them before mounting the drivers.
  9. Do ugly-but-awesome-sounding subs count?
  10. Cheers, the moment I saw it I've been figuring out if I could justify the cost...it just looks superb, and with Craig's track record, quite a safe blind (deaf?) purchase I reckon. Oh well, better work a bit more overtime I guess !
  11. Ah bollocks, it's only money. I've put my name down for a Balancing Act on the next run. If I get amp upgraditis in the future, you have my permission to shoot me.
  12. Thanks, useful info, though with that ZDT comment you've got me reconsidering amp options again! Where's that smiley for hitting one's head against a brick wall? Ah, this one will do... .
  13. Thanks a lot mate, I'm definitely edging towards the Cullen PSA DLIII/BUDA/balanced HD800s as what will hopefully be my "final" rig. Well, at least for a while anyway . At the risk of derailing the thread, I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts on the sound offered by that combo. Cheers.
  14. The only niggle I have about the UDAC is that you could get a Cullen Stage IV PS Audio DAC for a similar price, the latter of which is reportedly quite nice & "analoguey", which if true might suit the HD800s quite well. I don't fancy anything too ruthlessly transparent as a source with the HD800s as they're unforgiving enough as it is. I'm not sure what kind of sound signature the UDAC has, mind.
  15. Grats on the order. I'll probably be following quite soon I think. That combo seems to offer a lot for the
  16. Mr DHL just delivered #1563 into my eager hands. Fresh out of the box, these have a trait that I also associate with good loudspeakers...provided a decent recording, I am able to pick and follow any element or instrument within the music. Initial impressions definitely suggest a very revealing nature. Dark Side of the Moon SACD sounds fantastic, (What's the Story) Morning Glory? CD sounds bloody awful...as it does on any decent system in my experience. This is great fun, definitely one of those purchases that has me reaching into the depths of my music collection. It'll be interesting to see how they evolve in the early days & weeks.
  17. Cheers Peter, wise words. Actually I recently tried my first "tube roll" on my EAR+ and my findings were completely contrary to various opinions I've read, but then I'm kinda new to this tube malarky so it could really just be me and my dumb ears. Anyway, got a rather nice email today to say my HD800s are on the way, which means I can't afford the 50% deposit on the BA for another few weeks, conveniently giving me some time to think/agonize over the amp decision a while longer .
  18. Thanks dsavitsk, that's reassuring. I suppose I can always start out with some cheaper ones & go crazy from there. So hard for a relative amp-dummy like me to choose between all the designs out there as I don't get the opportunity to listen to a lot of kit other than my own. With this upgrade, I'm kinda thinking I may as well just go for the most expensive I can afford, from a respected builder, in the hope that I won't have to go through the dreaded upgrade process again in a couple of years. Hmm, famous last words...
  19. Hi all. I've been lurking for a while, thought I'd dip my toe & see what the water's like over here. I'm > < this close to pre-ordering a BA with Craig, but I note it ships without the 300B tubes. Being a bit of a tube dummy, I just googled 300B & the prices range from not a lot to more than a very lot. As I'm trying to put a budget together for this beast, does anyone have any thoughts on suitable tubes that'll do this amp justice? Do I really need to spend $1k+ on a pair of EAT 300Bs, or is it likely the BA will still sound awesome with something much less expensive like JJ or similar? I think some crazy expensive tubes might be the difference between getting the BA or going for something a step down in drool-ness. Cheers.
