  1. Wow...

I've been away for headphone hobby for a while and I guess a lot of things happened in the meantime. I'll just add that Jenalabs just (within the past hour or two) got rid of its R-10 response from its website, as if nothing had happened. I guess some people will be tricked into getting recables from Jenalabs again in the future...

  2. Looks like you should be keeping all three amps - you seem to like each of them for its special qualities! I'm thinking hard about tube amps nowadays but I'm not sure what to reach for, as I hardly had any experience with tubes in my life. ???

Did I ever mention how rock solid the Zana Deux is?

Not a single issue or quibble with it all these months, and from what I understand the previous owner put quite a few hours on...using the same 6c33 and rectifier tubes I've got in there. Also sports a ridiculously low noise level for a tube amp.

Last night I just had the right ch heater go out on a Tung Sol 6sn7 in my SDS. This is the second time that's happened (same channel too), and on a different tube from a different seller (I hadn't put that many hours on either). Probably just bad luck with tubes, but it made me think about how reliable that Zana, and its tubes, have been.

    Yep, L3000 4eva here :)

  3. Yes, even a 1st gen g4 mini is more than enough computer to use with the duet for music serving. You should be able to score a g4 mini for under $300. Another $200 for a 750gb drive ,and you have one hell of a music server for $1000.

That actually sounds pretty good..espcially since my desktop is loud as hell with its fans.

  4. Alright coming into '08 I'd like to get an electrostat rig in my office or main rig, although the K1000 on darTZeel sounds pretty good. Will the Justin's new amp (KGST?) or one of if it's variant surpass the now OOP KGBH at a similar price point $2.5K? I'd probably pair these up with HE 1.3's or Omega II's.

K1000s on darTZeel? Man, your K1000 is being pampered like no other.

  5. That is some serious commitment to a thread! Good work, and probably worth the effort.

Anyway, don't know if a couple weeks is literal, but we are having a meet at my place in Marin on Feb. 2 if you are around then. Neil will have to speak for himself about stopping by his place but let me know if you will be around at the beginning of February.

    Noooo!

    I'll be around between 15-19. =(

  6. They changed the policy so that all feedbacks must be approved by the other party. It's idiotic, IMHO.

Yeah they changed the policy, and I think thats when everybody started having great feedback rating.

Personally however, I've never really had a bad experience with agon. Several I've talked to were very approachable, and having conversations was actually delightful.

Lowball offers exist anywhere, and that wasn't much of an issue. However, some of the potential international buyers had difficulty communicating in english, and that was frustrating. I wouldn't want to send a product overseas to someone who doen't speak english well and still expect to have a great transaction in the end....just too risky.

  7. OK, it just took me a whole hour to read all the posts.

I've been away for a while because I wasn't feeling all too well this past month, and I guess I've been missing out on a LOT.

Neil, NWO must really be crazy. I've never seen you praise so much, aside from when you got your first HE90 rig. ;)

Would love to hear it someday...I'm actually going to be visiting SF area for the first time in 12 years in a couple weeks, and was wondering if I could stop by and pay a vist sometime. Gotta hear what everyones been raving about last month!

  8. I never found the HE90 to be bright out of either HEV90 or ES-1. IMO, the HE-90 has pretty much the nicest treble out of anything I've ever listened too, in fact, the treble might be a little too polite out of the HEV90. OTOH, I always found the L3000 and O2 (via KGSS) to be slightly recessed in the treble though. If we are going to talk bright, the R10 is definitely a good bit brighter than the HE-90.

    purk,

I actually found he90s to be a bit bright...didn't notice it until I got to compare side by side with sr-omega. I liked both presentations, but it was more comfortable listening to the sr-omega in the long run. Sounded more neutral tonality-wise than he90. I did like the bigger soundstage of the he90 though.

  9. I'd try and get Craig to release the balanced redtop/el34 or whatever it is now amp. Those should be in a pretty competitive price range though there might be a wait and I guess given their status they essentially might be custom. The HD2 is pretty sweet but that essentially is custom as well. Unsure. Still build times might not be too bad. Always the beta22. GS-X is also a simple convenient option. Then there's singlepower but I'm not sure what the current status on the squarewave or even really how it might sound.

I think if you want to minimize wait time... gs-x and beta22 from a reliable builder is your best bet given the budget you can swing. If I were you and want to stick to under 5k I'd probably get the Eddie Current HD2 (~2.2K I think was the last price I heard if you go with Electraprint transformers and nothing too esoteric). I haven't heard it yet but it should be really sick... will hear it weekend after the coming one. If you want to go over 5k well everything there is essentially custom and will take awhile.

Ooooh. let me know how they sound!

  10. So then what's your budget? There are plenty of good choices out there, most of which you probably are aware of.

No set budget right now...I guess I'll just buy anything thats good enough. Not looking to get a custom-amp though.

You're using the balanced amp as an expensive and inefficient balun. Just buy baluns. Several manufacturers sell XLR->RCA adapters, then you can use your cables. When you decide you want to go balanced end to end, then buy the balanced amp. Or just use the unbalanced outs on your source, which will probably be better.

I guess I shouldn't have gotten rid of my Supra-XLR. Got rid of it to fund my speaker rig upgrade and now I'm kinda regretting it...

  11. I guess it's because I'm mainly focusing on a speaker rig (so I don't really want to bother with caabling issue at the moment), and I'd like to get rid of DHA3K and actually make good use of highend DACs. Waste of money to get a balanced headphopne amp, you think?

I may end up getting rid of most of my other headphones and just get a balanced HD650 sometime in the future...so I would like to keep the option open.
