If I remember correctly from listening to the broadcast, it can read through scratches (to an extent) and even work around a broken piece, provided you still have the broken piece.

Library of congress already has the laser turntables don't they? I wonder what shortcomings they have.

That elp thing is apparently extremely sensitive to any dirt on the record.
