Cutting up USB cables to wire up a separate 5V supply?

I was thinking more along the lines of venturing into licquor territory (as I am even more noobish on that than audio, so that says a lot), but I guess all those things mentioned above might be a possibility.

NOTE: I still haven't received that cable I ordered that utilizes two usb ports to power one unit. I wonder how those will perform.
