  1. I've had my Oppo 83 for about two weeks and it is fantastic. Super fast, not as loud as the PS3, and standard DVDs look damn close to Bluray in quality. I almost prefer DVD simply because they fill the screen instead of being 2.35 letterboxed like BD.

I have it going into my Pioneer SC-05 AVR to the Kuro 141FD display... it's Nirvana up in here :D

I wonder how the new "slim" PS3 will compare to the Oppo. It is supposed to be much quieter than the the old PS3. Also, it is now only $299 which seems like a deal. I have liked both upconverting Oppo's that I have bought in the past (980 and 970). However, they both started making some noise after owning them for some time (6 months?) which is annoying. I am thinking of getting the PS3 since then I can replace my Popcorn Hour network media tank, PS2 and Oppo 980 with 1 piece of equipment (and have a lot fewer cords). Since I only have a 40" tv, I doubt it will make much difference on the Blu-ray disks.

  2. I just wanted to point out what is probably the obvious: that the B22 from Glass Jar Audio is a kit with no case included. From what I hear, the B22 can end up costing a lot more than $800 after finished, but I may be mistaken. Also, it will take a lot of time to complete even if you have a lot of experience with DIY (from what I have heard).

  3. Yep, touch would have been nice but was not necessary for me since I mainly use it for taking notes and drawing pictures. The most important thing for me was to get the *thinnest* (so that my arm resting on the desk and tablet was as comfortable as possible) and lightest. I used a convertible tablet once for taking notes and it was horrible because it was too thick. The LE1700 was the thinnest I could find (0.74 inches at the "bottom"). However, it seems that the Apple tablet may even be thinner than .74 inches which would be great! The LE1700 also only weights 3.3lbs which is on the lighter side but the Apple tablet would probably be lighter? I also like having a 12" screen. Unfortunately, the Apple tablet will probably be smaller than 12". The screens on the Motion Computing tablets are really wonderful and are great to write on. I have the indoor/outdoor display which is great if you work in an area with flourescent (sp?) lights.

I hope they have some good note taking capabilities for the Apple tablet. That is one thing that is really missing on the Modbook (which is pretty clunky if you ask me).

shellylh, why didn't you get a touch + digitizer tablet? Direct touch adds another dimension to it as a casual ebook reader / webpad. The lenovo x200t ... mmm :).

As far as I am concerned the LE1700 has only one great thing: the non-wide high-res ultraview anywhere screen. :)

As for Apple, Snow Leopard will be even smaller footprint than Leopard. Now that would be the ideal netbook/tablet OS among the desktop ones!

Something like a NVidia Tegra based tablet with a 1366x768 7"-9" OLED widesscreen, full day battery life whatever you do with it, maximum 600g, maybe 800g with the extended battery grip. I would like a non-wide non-glossy outdoor screen, but hey, lately it seems that every manufacturer thinks that it MUST be wide and glossy or it would cause sclerosis to your mivonks! :)

But more important than hardware would be the software. I don't want to see any fucking desktop OS on it. I want it to have a light multitasking enabled version of the iphone osx.

Also, the rule of law is: No digitizer = Useless toy!

IF it comes it would cost at least as much as the macbook. And it would be worth it!

  4. I can guarantee that this product will be coming out soon because of the following....

I have been waiting for an Apple tablet for the last 5 years. Last month, I finally gave up and spent $2500 on a Motion Computing LE1700 tablet (slate) - that I only use for taking notes and drawing some pictures with Adobe Illustrator (my primary laptop is a Macbook Pro). If this is not proof that the Mac tablet is no longer a rumor but a reality, I don't know what is... sigh. :(

  5. I am at the airport using my Palm Pre and mytether to use as a "wireless router" to get internet access on my Macbook Pro (actually I am on the plane waiting for boarding to complete). It works really great and has a pretty fast download speed.

  6. Anyone else who has a Pre I highly recommend trying out the MyTether app, it's one of the best tethering apps I've ever used on any phone. It can tether via usb, bluetooth or wifi (ad-hoc).

Very nice, thanks for the link to the app!

  7. Belden. Lower capacitance, AES/EBU standard characteristic impedance (so can be used for more applications), and it's less expensive. The Canare cable just has better CMR, but that shouldn't be an issue in your system so the Belden is the better choice.

Thanks but I already contacted heels-6 and ordered some 1.5ft cables Star Quad (cheaper than BJC Belden). Maybe I'll try the Belden next time though.

  8. I am going to buy a set of 1ft XLR(m)-XLR(f) cable from Blue Jeans Cable to connect my ECD-1 to my HR BUDA. The options are Belden 1800F or Canare L-4E6S Star Quad. Any reason to go for one or the other for such a short run? They are both close to the same price, I guess the Star Quad is a tiny bit more. I have seen that a lot of DIY people use the Star Quad for their cables (along with Mogami) but perhaps that is because it is more readily available and/or easier to work with than the Belden????

My impression is that it is not going to make much of a difference which I buy and to just go for the Belden since it is slightly cheaper. Any thoughts?

*My amp for now will my right on top of the DAC so 1 ft should be fine as long as the cables are not *too* thick. If they are about the same thickness as the LC-1, it should be fine.

  9. Talking about for sale, how do you feel about Stello HP100 vs GS-1?

Well, I feel that the HP100 is very good. The GS-1 in my mind is slightly smoother and more neutral with a slightly better soundstate. They are both very good amps though. I am surprised more people haven't jumped on the HP100 bandwagon.

  10. Ok, in case anyone was dying to hear the end of the story and losing sleep over my decision, I just order a BUDA+DPS. I figure this way I get to hear something new and there is no risk with Headroom's 30 day trial! Should ship in 2-4 weeks (probably closer to 4 weeks according to the salesperson on the phone). :P

Now I just need to get rid of my Stello amp and DAC to make up for some of the loss of green.

  11. The WA6 SE (at least with the Sophia 274B rectifier) is a really nice amp. It really drives all cans (that I have tried) with authority. I almost bought one after hearing it at a Houston meet last year but ended up with a WA5LE instead. After listening to it again at CanJam, I am still impressed with it. I haven't heard the WA4 but I did hear the WA2 and was not as impressed with it as the WA6 SE. If you want to spend a little more, the WA22 was even sweeter than the WA6SE! :P

  12. I was thinking of doing exactly this since I have never owned any Headroom amps (something new is fun!) and there is the 30 day trial period. :) I waited 6 months for the GS-1 so I am never giving that up! Haha

Also note the GS-X's wait time and the fact that it is a balanced GS-1 with better PSU (since you already have a GS-1). Of course I have heard that the GS-X sounds better than a GS-1 even single ended, but it shouldn't be drastically different from the GS-1.

I'd probably just try out a BUDA, and return it if I didn't like it over the GS-1 and get a GS-X.

  13. Oh, I guess I didn't phrase my statement/question correctly. I am pretty sure the GS-X has separate power supplies for each channel. I assume that the BUDA+DPS does not. Is this correct and is it going to give the GS-X an advantage over the BUDA+DPS, at least on paper?

The DPS is an upgrade external power supply for the BUDA. Someone else will have to respond about the GS-X.
  14. Ok, I have sort of a dumb question. I assume that the Headroom BUDA+DPS has a single power supply whereas the GS-X has separate power supplies. Is this true? Will this give some advantage to the GS-X? I'm not exactly sure what is going on with the DPS since my knowledge of electronics is pretty limited.

Also anyone know any specs on the BUDA and/or BUDA+DPS? I cannot find much online.

  15. Dreadhead: How much improvement did you see running it balanced vs single-ended (presumably, SE would sound the same as a GS-1 which I currently have)?

Well I finally got to hear my HD800s balanced out of my GS-X today and it sounds truly amazing much like it did single ended. That said I was really impressed by the BUDA amp + HD800s at CJ. I think everyone stating it's a no-lose is pretty much on the money.
