  1. I just bought the SR-009 which should be here soon.  I have resisted buying them forever because I never really warmed up to its sound signature when I have listened to them, even via Blue Hawaii SE.

Yes, I am a lover of single-ended triode (mostly 2A3 and 45) sound.  I don't listen to stuff with lots of bass of dynamic jump, so these days I'm happy listening to my Stax O2 MkI, Senn HE-60 (woody), and HE Audio 'stat via Stax transformer with my 2A3 SET or EL84 sigle-ended pentode speaker amps.  SR-009 should be easier to drive than O2, so that's good, but obviously, a dedicated 'stat amp will be needed at some point.

Blue Hawaii SE, hopefully with some tube, cable rolling may be in the cards.

Listened to Electra, and 009 sounded pretty good and musical, but obviously bass dynamics were not top-shelf.  Then again, I could live with that.

Dying to try T2 with SR-009.  Others?

  2. It's the Tamron 24-70 VC and Sigma 35 f/1.4 ART that are redefining what third party lenses can do.

Tamron's "second lens element issue" is something to give you pause but unlikely a problem unless one handles the lens very roughly.

Otherwise, looks stellar for a 24-70 zoom.  I find the Photozone reviews to be fairly objective and comparable across lenses tested:

  3. I think it comes down to the price one is willing to pay.  RX100 II is a great camera "despite" its smallish 1" sensor, but some may view $750 as a bit too steep, considering that for $50 more, one can get the Ricoh GR with full aps-c sensor and that Ricoh charm.  Nikon A commands dslr-type price at $1100.

I might have considered either Ricoh and NIkon A for my portable need, but annoyingly enough, both are limited by f2.8 fixed lens and 1/2000th max shutter speed (Ricoh at fast apertures).

  4. If Nikon is Nikon, the D610 will be a fixed D600 (though my D600 hasn't ever had an issue) the same way the SB-910 is a fixed SB-900.

A friend of mine was so happy his D600 was trouble-free.  Then he went on a long trip involving multiple national parks with his D600 and sadly told me that after taking many shots (presumably getting it warm inside the body), he started getting the dreaded oil-spots all over the sensor, ruining the beautiful photos of national parks  :-[

Finally got some Rogue Flashbenders and diffusion panels. I was happy to see the pseudo-softbox gave off a pretty even light across the panel without big hot spots, and these are definitely much easier to carry around than other "portable" softboxes I have. With the small Canon 90EX flash acting as master, the Rogue makes a softened two-speedlite portable light setup much more convenient.

    *Edit*

Using the two-light setup above.  I believe I have found my portable two-light solution.

  6. can't you just get an antenna and watch it (for free)?

My area near mountains doesn't make it easy. I'll have to install an array on my roof..

It's not just CBS, either, but all CBS-owned channels like Showtime, TMC, FLIX and Smithsonian.

  7. I've switched to Fuji X-E1 and I'm loving it with a few caveats.  The focus is not quite fast enough for any candid portraits.

I really can't stand EVF's, even the supposedly good Sony NEX ones, which are reportedly better than Fuji EVF's.  How do you like the Fuji EVF vs Fuji LCD for AF speed?  Since I'm not an EVF person, I'm thinking Fuji X-M1 is more up my alley, as it's cheaper and smaller than X-E1 with same sensor.

  8. This EF-M 22 mm f/2 lens is a beauty.  I especially love how close you can get (15 cm) with awesome 1:2 near-macro ability.  Sharpness, bokeh, and build quality are way beyond what the low price suggests also.  Given the stratospheric pricing of recent Canon lenses, I'm happy with the little EF-M 22 mm and may pick up the EF-M 18-55 to try.  Below at f/2.

  9. I am so glad I did not order the EOS-M from Adorama, who cancelled all the backorders.  I ordered from B&H when EOS-M/22mm was already backordered, but they honored the order unlike Adorama.  I just received it, and to my surprise, B&H seems to have honored the EOS-M/22mm backorder with EOS-M/22mm/90EX kit!  That's right, 90EX flash included for my $299 order  ;D

I was also happy to find out the cheaper Viltrox adapter works great with EF lenses.

Finally, a sample shot with EOS-M/85L with the 90EX acting as master to fire off-camera 580 EX II.
