  1. Tyll is most certainly not part of the hype train.  Electrostatics are not his usual thing though so that might be a factor.

Yup. I can only report what i Heard. The issues raised here are pretty different than a review of its sound.

I thought it sounded pretty good, but the BHSE was the clearly superior amp to my ears in the test.

I thin Alex should directly address the output safety circuit issues raised here. He's producing an amp that can pack a wallop; making it safe is his responsibility. Addressing concerns of competent critics is within his capabilities surely.

  2. Indeed! At least for now, the plan is to do a small run of Black Diamonds. I am just investigating some machining issues right now, so hopefully they'll be ready this fall. Work has also started on a DSHA-2, but I haven't even prototyped it yet, so it is probably a winter or spring thing, if it works at all.

Doug, please let me know when you've got a production version so I can spill some ink and hopefully get them moving a bit for you.

  3. I have the JH13 and don't feel like I need any more bass (I also like the Etys though). I would get them over the JH16 if I were buying now. I doubt there are any other custom IEMs out there that compete.

I think the Westone ES5 does well. The JH13 is more exciting, and is more coherent (better imaging) but the ES5 is more neutral...though a tad rolled-off up top. Both are really good IMHO.

  4. Hi Guys!!! Thanks for the well wishes.

Yup. I was out on my bike. Visited a friend 418 miles away.

A lovely 7 hour jaunt each way of pure, unadulterated helmet time.

    Oh! The Harleys are migrating!

Sturgis time again, and now they're lumbering back to their home paddocks.

Most are in trailors, but many are free-roaming on the slab at the moment.

I know they can go faster---cuz every once in a while there's a good rider out there who moves right on by me---

but for the most part the sound of Freedom does about 70mph max.

    Potato..potato...potato....

Again, thanks guys, had a great birthday.

And Al, how the fuck did you find that picture!

  5. Yup. Well, to the best of my ability to figure, all you need is to cover the ring around the driver and the black plastic bits with felt inside the headphones.  Anaxilus has made a variety of other changes, but I haven't kept up with what he's up to; I was just sort of waiting for what he finally came up with.

Though the biggest improvement was Doug's L-2.

  6. The real question is if a wire with gain amp (say a Pico Power) with a 43 Ohm series adapter sounds better than an "amp with character" with a ~40 Ohm output impedance?

Ima do an article about this, but the bottom line is it depends on the character of the amp.

The L-2 is glorious. Have you seen its very evenly spaced in amplitude harmonic series? That's a biggie.

I bet the Pico Power would sound tight as transparent as shit, and the output impedance would warm the 800 nicely.

And I bet a poorly designed amp with character and a high output impedance would be like a drunk hooker who'd blow you for free:

Good at first, but worry some over time,
