  1. A real response?  AppleTV.

I use one at work where I can't connect to a Wi-Fi network.  The beauty of the AppleTV is that it uses Bluetooth to proximity-locate the iPhone and then does a kind of local Wi-Fi connection between the two to allow for lossless AirPlay streaming.  You would then connect the optical out of the AppleTV to the optical input.  I picked up a refurb for $50, have it connected via the optical out to my DAC and then to my Quad 9L Active speakers.  Lossless digital connection and wireless, too.

Just in case someone is looking down the road.

  2. We got to go up and visit with the new dog again today. She's due in late November, and since we're going to take both her and the one puppy, we will actually be able to bring them home closer to Christmas than late January like we had thought. It's still going to be tough to wait, but she's a sweet dog and it'll be worth it.

  3. It's officially hardtop season, so in addition to cleaning a bunch of grit and grime off of it from storing it outside all summer, I got Thule tracks mounted on it, the Thule towers and bars I kept from the last Jeep and the ski box test fit for the upcoming ski season.

Also did a bunch of yard work, trying to clean things up before weather really turns.

  4. A good two days of working on the living room with my father. Faux fireplace, wired for TV and speakers, new built in nook for the electronics and some in-wall speakers to clean things up. Ship lap paneling, a reclaimed mantle and no wires makes me very happy. We just need to caulk, fill, prime and paint the pine and oil the mantle and take care of a spot where the plaster didn't cooperate when installing the speakers.

  5.  I keep telling myself that I need to backup both the iPad and the iPhone in the near future but I never quite get there...

Just set up your iCloud account and it will auto-back up when plugged in overnight.  I'm guessing you'll be fine with the 5GB you get for free.  I pay for the 200GB due to the number of photos I need to back up at this point.

  6. Holly Herndon, Platform -- glitchy experimental electronica -- medigs! -- RIYL Oneohtrix Point Never, Grimes, Fever Ray, et al.

Thanks for the post... I didn't realize it was out.  I had been trying to keep her on my radar for a while and failed.  I just finished listening myself... It's a great album.

  7. Thanks everyone! Enjoying the day off with Lauren and Penelope, and we get to do it all again tomorrow for Penelope's 2nd birthday!

And good call on the Jeep, Al... One trip to and from the pool already, another planned for tonight and off to the beach in it tomorrow! Gotta love this weather.

  8. Yeah, the D700 is still going strong... She actually borrowed the D750 from a friend. But she's strongly considering adding one and keeping the 700 if she starts doing more weddings. And she's intrigued by adding video capabilities for her documentary sessions. And yeah... The 24 would round out the collection of primes, and she was thinking she would rent the 70-200 for a few weddings to see off she really wants it.

  9. Yesterday I got to play photographer's assistant/2nd shooter at a wedding Lauren was shooting. It was for someone we both knew, and it was a lot of fun. Got to shoot with both the 700 and the 750, with the Sigma 35mm and Nikon 50mm, 85mm and 24-70mm lenses. She rented the 24-70, and had thought that would be her next lens, but is leaning towards buying the 24mm Art instead.

  10. Got my new Alpine CarPlay unit installed in the Jeep. Initial impressions are only based on some very basic interactions in the driveway, but it seems like it's going to work really well.

So, I was able to use this more over the weekend, and I have tip say that I'm pretty pleased with CarPlay. Anyone who's used Apple Maps will be familiar with the interface, though the improvement on the use of the added real estate with a 7" screen are noticeable. Siri search had worked so far, dictating and reading back of messages has been successful, and once I got some of the settings dialed in, I'm really happy with how it sounds. Highly recommended!
