Stacking Caps versus Stacking Supplies
kevin gilmore replied to luvdunhill's topic in Do It Yourself
You can make a supply the same way as my original ac coupled tube amp. That is use a center tapped secondary, or in fact two seperate windings each of which rectified makes something like 400 volts with 450 volt capacitors. Then stack the two and make the bottom ground. Only issue is whether or not the transformer has enough isolation for the top winding to sit 400 volts above ground. Normally these transformers are rated at 1kv or more, so it is not a problem. -
someone is paying attention...

Nate, why did you have to go and publish the schematics? Now ray will finally be able to finish his A10... (not a chance)

Solidstate-tube is what i think it stands for. Differentiates it from a BH which is also solid state-tube, but is grounded grid output. What's in a name anyways...

Krell SACD Standard / Marantz SA-11S1

The Emm stuff is certainly nice stuff. But i don't like the almost complete lack of a dealer network in the usa, combined with grief shipping across the border into canada if the thing needs repair. I've seen early emm stuff with lots of cuts and jumps. You don't ever see that on krell gear. Also lots of complaints with his early transports, and even some problems with current transports. And the 6 channel preamp has a design flaw relating to volume matching of front and back channels. If you can buy a computer dvd drive for $40 that works perfectly almost forever why can't they make sacd drives do the same thing. Same laser, same bit rates. -

I have an original mark 1. Original transport. Its better than the sony in every way. Another reason the sony gathers dust in the basement. For cd's at the time i was using my krell kps20il-d9. which is still a great but cd only player. I still have it, and it still works perfectly. It does seem that people that have the most trouble with the transport push the door closed. I have never done that. I just press open, put a disc in and press play. Sony seems to have a history with expensive fuckups. The scd-1 is one example. The entire qualia line is another, expecially the -004 projector. And lets not forget the 700+ lb 45 inch direct view trinitron circa 1992. A number of the expensive players, like the esoteric don't actually do native sacd, they convert to 196/24. I would rather have native sacd. -

See if sony did not have their head stuck so far up their ass they would put encrypted outputs on their $300 sacd/dvd players, then you buy a kickass dac from someone who knows what they are doing (like krell). Then when the drive dies, you throw it in the garbage and get another one. I happen to have 2 of these $300 pieces of crap. They never seem to break. Sound like shit in comparason to the real things, which is probably why they will never break. Was not aware the cary was the same transport, but the classe' certainly was, their 2 box version of the scd-1 was like $10k. All the same problems... If (when) my krell dies, there is a dealer just down the street, will have an evolution next business day... -

I have a sony scd-1. First $1000 gets it. Guaranteed not to load half the discs you have. And then i never want to hear about it again. -

Have one of the original 50 handmade in usa krell units. Love it. Not a single problem with it as it has one of the hand made transports. More than 4 years old now, and not a single skip or disc error. If/when it dies i will get the evolution. All the new units have, or can be upgraded to a problem free transport. The sound is what you are after, and its typical krell. -

If they are unipolar elements like the pictures sure show them to be, then the bias has to be added to the audio signal. No bias and they sound like shit. A stax transformer box without modifications cannot add the bias this way. -
so that is what yorkies look like when they are groomed...

you obviously have not seen the original schematic drawn on a bar napkin while i was in hawaii. (and very drunk at the time) I'm pretty sure it was a joke as i finally have forced justin to do hand drawn schematics. that look as bad as some of mine. Anyway jazz or blues would definitely be ok by me for the concert part of next years party. Drinking not allowed at the meet Where is the fun in that...
-
Next year why not just throw a drinking party. If its in chicago, i'll promise to bring at least 5 bottles of scotch the youngest of which will be 30 years old.

where's aerius when you need him ?
-
You did put some insulation between the too... RIGHT?? its really going to damage something if it shorts again with the capacitors charged up. Then you really will damage the thing. Small sheet of fiberglass works great. Very few of the companies selling tubes actually match section to section on an indivual tube. They just match tube to tube. On the sr-007 it is very important for the 2 sections of each tube to be closely matches. The additional adjustment for each section has a very small range.
-
well if you fried the transformer, its over, or expensive, or both. fix the fuse issue and turn it on, you will know soon.
-
fuse now shorting against one of the transformer pins. needs to be fixed. Transformer needs to be loosened up and moved a bit, and some kind of insulation between the fuse holder and the transformer.

As long as 630 volt capacitors are available, there is no reason why the power supply can't go to +/-550. All the parts are rated for 600 volts. Or stack 350 volt caps. At which point DIY is not recommended except for people who really know what they are doing. Did not see any pictures of ray's new electrostatic amp at canjam :'(
-
A much more extreme BH supply is coming. Maybe another 10 months. Should be available as an upgrade to all the new stuff including the BHSE. Won't be cheap. Trust me on this one, MUCH MORE EXTREME. Dual tracking 4 stage shunt regulation design.

I did design an amp for the TakeT... Plenty of drive oomph. No way to test it yet... Those things definitely eat lots of current. Hook them up to the primary side of a push pull tube amp. 60 watt amp should be plenty.

Best SS-amp Today; Cost NO Object?
kevin gilmore replied to Contrastique's topic in Headphone Amplification
Done. Maybe if there is a national meet next year in chicago i'll bring mine. And yes the real blowtorch chassis was pretty over the top. My new preamp, which both is and is not a clone of the john curl design has been prototyped, but no board layout, or anything like that. It will not be the same silly over the top chassis. The front end amplifier is both a completely balanced to balanced converter, and a unbalanced to balanced converter at the same time. So that the output impedance of the front end amplifier to the attenuator is identical in both modes. After the attenuator there is a line driver amplifier. The original blowtorch is only unbalanced to balanced. Maybe when its stinkin hot this summer i will do the preamp board layout. -
The guy has clearly learned how to break into the cable just like MIT and Transparent do to their high priced cables.

good flash and flash cord extender great for making sure there is no glare.
