  1. It's absolutely absurd.

Does anyone know of the K271 comes stock with the velour? And does Guitar Center RMAC (return to manufacturer) their return merchandise?

I'm almost to the point of buying a 271, taking the foam discs, swapping the velour pads, and returning the 'phones so they can go back to AKG that way. But that's not honest, IMO so I doubt I'll actually do it.

I don't think the 271s come with velour pads.

  2. I spent some time at the florida meet comparing Ray's R10s (serial number in the 1100 range) to a AT W11JPN and to my surprise the R10s had considerably deeper and fuller sounding bass with more impact. In fact the only pair of R10s I heard that were lacking in bass was an older pair that Mikhail had at the national meet (not the recabled one, he had two pairs at that meet). The rest of the R10s I have heard were the later production models and I was always satisfied with the amount of bass they presented. To me percussion instruments sound more real on the R10s than any other headphone I have ever heard.

  3. Probably very well. You will have the Plitron which is an absolutely first class power transformer and the cap upgrades. My Supra is basically stock. The Supra will have better power supply filtration and the large resevoir caps, however. I am getting an Extreme but I am only upgrading the power transformer with a higher capacity unit thats the same type as the stock unit.

  4. The amp at the Florida meet was using 5998 output tubes. Mikhail built :mikey2: another Extreme yesterday and when doing preliminary bench testing he found if you use the 6080 tube type there is about 2x the current delivery vs the 5998. He also tried some RS-1's and he said he was extremely pleased with how the grados sound with the Extreme. He basically said to me, "this is the best I have ever heard the grados sound".

So .... if this amp drives K1000's and the grados effortlessly with the 5998 tube types .... the 6080 will output considerably more power. There should be no concern with driving any headphone .... period. 8)

Something tells me that I'm gonna be really really happy with this amp when I get it. ;D ;D ;D

  5. I couldn't get this in time for the edit, but judging by the specs the Extreme should be able to drive low and high imp. headphones with ease? I would be using it with just my HD650 but I'm more than likely going to get an RS-2 (and hopefully find another HP-2)

Yes It drove every headphone I tried with ease. Even the 40 ohm R10s. I didn't try any grados but I don't think they would be a problem for the extreme.

  6. I saw a quote from the meet thread on head-fi that said the circuit has little in common with the PPX3. So apparently he has changed the circuit some more. It also looks like the amp is just going to be called the "Extreme".

Yes from what I understand from Mikhail is that the circuit for the Extreme uses a small part of the ppx3 circuit board and the rest is a completely new design wired p2p.
