I was reading a lively thread on HF (something about rudi and a new amp) and realized that my knowledge of measurements and most things to do with engineering is sorely lacking. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions about learning about the engineering aspects of amps,etc (ie good design). I am mainly looking for a basic understanding to become a better consumer (or be less of an idiot). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Wow I think that would require an entire physics and engineering course. But well how about this: Analysis and Design of Analog Integrated Circuits (4th Edition): Paul R. Gray, Paul J. Hurst, Stephen H. Lewis, Robert G. Meyer

Frankly I haven't read it since I haven't found the time but someone did recommend it to me. There's really a ton of material out if you're really interested in engineering.

If you're looking to learn about tube amps, Norman Crowhurst's Basic Audio series is exceptional. It has huge diagrams and illustrations on almost every page and is written towards a total beginner, but it's written so that you'll learn something too.
