  1. i cast a hex on them, does that count?

    No. Dippie.gif You were drunk.

when these guys show up at CanJam it means they value you and your opinion

This is not my experience of how large corporations operate from the inside.

    Alright, I'll rephrase that:

"when these guys show up at CanJam they think they value you and your opinion"

They may be deluded, but aren't we all.

  2. As this hobby and event continues to grow, it can only be safely assumed that the more commercial entities will take notice and want to become involved. Just speculating here, but I can see Bose or a Bose-like company wanting to be a part of the event and community. We will need to make sure that we articulate clearly what the community and the event is about, and ensure that they understand and respect the relatively close, respectful, tightly knit group that we have established.

    Truthiness! deal.gif

The more vendors you have, the more money is made for the organizers to figure out how to spend it on the members fun.

I'll also add, that when these guys show up at CanJam it means they value you and your opinion. And when they're there you have the opportunity to voice your pleasure/displeasure at their products and corporate activity.

How many here had the balls to tell them you're opinion of Monster? Noel Lee said "Headphones are the new speakers" to me. He wants "in" in this market. I think it's only right for folks to make sure they have an accurate understanding of the perceptions they'll have to deal with as they try to enter this market.

CanJam is a GREAT opportunity to speak up and speak directly to the people who bring headphone products to you. And it's virtually a miracle that they're coming to us, rather than trying to worm your opinion into their corporate systems.

  3. I'm new to this group. I have a Wadia iTransport coupled to a DAC1 with Sennheiser HD800 'phones that I could bring to the event, assuming there's any interest in this kind of setup.

Hiya n00b! Nice rig, please do bring it! hitit.gif

Wow....this start to sound like a pretty nice meet!!! So Tyll, will you bring along the HD800?

Well ... sure ... I'll play second fiddle to the n00b above and bring a pair too. I'll run mine balanced just for flayva. Augie.gif

... and of course, the Bitch Weasel.

    What's a bitch whistle? headscratch.gif

    (til the Tyll-hosted afterparty... no?)

Chuck's taking me to dinner after the meet, and I've got an early AM flight the next day, so I think I'm out for the afterparty. sad.gif

The cool thing about this particular Squeezebox setup is it doesn't even require the computer to be on to listen to my music, because Slimserver is running on a very small, fanless fileserver.

That sounds damn cool. Looking forward to checking it out. You got a linky for that fileserver gizmo? ear.gif

  4. someone should take a squeezebox, computer geeks love stuff like that

I think someone is, but it can be a bit trick to set it up on a hotel network where the router doesn't want to let shit talk to each other. I've brought my own router to meets before so the Transporter could talk to the computer, but once your behind a second router the hotel router wouldn't let me out into the rest of the world.

It's a good idea though, and I think someones doing it.

Maybe I should just set up one of mine to get streaming radio and Pandora with a tiny Micro DAC and Amp system. Hm, I think I'll do that.

  5. I fuckin' love you guys! Rabia.gif

    Thanks for having my back.

    can MOTs go?

You're in Justin. You can have a 6' table. Try to bring a computer as a source if you can. If you can't I can whip something up if you'd like.

Turns out they're gonna have about 12-15 tables, so it's pretty much a headphone meet. Anybody can come and bring gear, I doubt we'll max the place out. Computer sources are desired, but not mandatory.

Please check in here or over at HF if you think you'll make it.

Oh, here's the info from the HF post for the ban.gif.

    Hiya Georgia wave.gif.

Chuck Bruce - VP Industry Relations, Audio Video Club of Atlanta - has asked me to help him putting together an event. Basically, the Audio Video Club of Atlanta wants to have a look at high-end audio on computers.

I'll be bringing down our Audiophile Desktop System, but what we'd both really like is if some of you Georgia Head-Fiers could bring your computer rigs to show off at the event.

We need 4 members with nice computer systems who would be willing to bring them and show them off to folks at the event. (Ignore this part, now taking all comers.)

The event will be held on Sunday June 28. Access to the rooms for set-up will be at 12 Noon, with the event commencing at 2 PM, running to appx 5 PM, breakdown by 6 PM.

    The venue will be:

    Marriott Courtyard Northlake

4083 La Vista Road, Tucker, GA 30084

    770-938-1200.

Near intersection of La Vista Rd and I-285 freeway.

If you are interested in showing off your gear, or just going to the event, please post up here and we'll "git 'er done."

    Thanks much. thumb.gif

  6. Just a thought here, but I reckon the 800s finally deliver a back-end good enough to really hear the front end of your system. I'm guessing the whole hobby will be revisiting the conventional wisdoms on various amps and dacs, and we'll begin to experience some reshuffling of opinion about a goodly amount of gear.

  7. I don't know how to do that, and don't much care to learn right now. I'm busy pouting.

Sorry Vicki, that sucks. I'd really like to swap it out with a new pair so that we can have a listen to them and try to figure out what's up. I think Jorge is contacting you to arrange.

Can somebody provide links to where other comments are being made re: this problem? I'll talk to Sennheiser about it.

  8. Got confirmation toady that we'll be getting ~130 HD800s. We'll probably latch onto a couple, but we have 145 on order so almost everyone will be getting theirs.

HEY JP! Sorry I didn't know this info when you called this am. Call me.

  9. I'm hoping for a longer delay, I need more time to increase my cash reserve.

Ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, ding!

    You're a winner.

Here's a copy of my post at the other place:

    ---------------------------------------------

Listen, everyone needs to realize the only thing invested here is the time it took to place an order ... and express their hopes and dreams in endless ramblings here.

(Did I just say that out loud?)

Considering the fact that we find ourselves in the midst OF A GLOBAL ECONOMIC MELTDOWN!!!, I think it would be wise for us all to chill out, and let one of the world's best headphone makers get it right.

Yeah .... sure .... it sucks. But I'm sure Sennheiser has acted on the best information it had at the time as things went on.

I'm hearing next estimate is mid-late June. (I added the late.) But you can pick your own wall calendar to throw a dart at. All I know is what I heard and I can wait to get my ears on a pair so that I'm sure each and every one will sound as good or better than that.

    So.....

Get your headphones on and go listen to some music.

Maybe send some good thoughts to the elves in Germany to help 'em out.

  10. Hi guys. Sorry, I really should try to keep a better eye out on the threads here, and I will.

The new BUDA is essentially the Max in a smaller package. If there is any improvement it's that the switches control relays in the box to move signals so the traces may be a bit shorter, but for all intents and purposes it sounds like a Max.

The new UDAC shares nothing in common with the Max DAC boards in the other products. It starts with the Sabre chip and Joe did a great job of providing 4 regulated power supplies internally for the different parts of the DAC and output circuitry, and he did a supurbe job of setting up the analog output stage which is critical and essentially part of the DAC converter circuit.

The thing I don't like about the product is that the friggen ESS DAC chip is soooooooo friggen complex. DACs these days are getting to the point that you need a PhD in number theory to understand what the hell is going on. Also the ESS guys want to make sure no one really understands it well eoungh to copy it. Trying to write about the product intelegently is a friggen nightmare.

The good news is that for all it's complication, it sounds ... well ... like nothing. It's one of the most transperant and natural sounding audio gizmos I've heard.

To my knowledge there is only one product out there that does 192/24 and it's one of the pro pieces (sorry I don't remember which one). There are a number now that do the 96/24 using the TI TAS 1020B. The UDAC only does 16/44 on USB as it still uses the 2902 chip. I've been using the M-Audio Transit to convert USB to 96/24 S/PDIF then into the optical in on the UDAC and it works well.

  11. Tyll said over on HF yesterday that Senn has already sold out their entire first year production run of the 800s. That little write-up won't help the supply situation! :)

I said they have orders equal to what they forcast. I don't have any Idea how many they can produce.

Edit -- Sorry, I posted immediately and didn't see your post, Nate. Thanks.

If they need to ramp it up, I'm sure they'll be able to.

My guess is that the initial pent-up demand bump was WAY higher than they expected. The baseline selling rate is a different story though, and remains to be seen.

I'd love it if these sold like hotcakes, but the question is: after you lugs get yours, do the moderately whelthy audiophiles have a desire for headphones yet.

The magazines have been doing a pretty good job of letting people know about cans...better than ever before anyway.

I'm rooting for it, but I'm thinking 50/50. Now, 50/50 is the best odds I've ever given it, but I don't think average audiophiles are really embracing headphones yet.
