  1. The output is taken from the plate. Thing is the 6C33 has a pretty low plate resistance, I think it was somewhere around 90-100 ohms so with a bit of negative feedback around the tube the output impedance can be dropped to a reasonably low level. I remember KG posting the numbers somewhere but I can't find them at the moment.

You got it - output from the plate. And since the 6c33c has a pretty low plate resistance as is (craig has it at 90 ohms), just a bit of negative feedback and he drops it to 12 ohms output.

  2. Hey guys I read the email again from JL and I think you all are missing a very important point.

Jena did have one of the leading headphone cable designers, Ken from ALO, listen to them. He didn't hear anything wrong and thought they sounded fantastic. So basically you guys are all wrong, sorry.

I guess we can surmise that Alex messed up the R10's himself to corroborate a story on how he saved them from extinction. Kind of like in the Dan Brown's Angels and Demons but not as dramatic. hahahahaha

  3. The other kind is what we have here, people who through their work & experience have gained a ton of knowledge, far above that of the average person, and are willing to share their experiences. This is the good kind of elitism, educated viewpoints & opinions which have something to back them up. If for example I say "XYZ sucks", I can and will tell how it sucks, why it sucks, and the technical reasons for the how & why.

I believe in america that is what we refer to as a "think tank" - which I think is a good thing. It's why I like this place and usually post my questions here and ask for advice here than over there. If I posted a HP1000 vs. L3000 thread I would get a lot of "ooooh pretty cans can me touch dem?" - or I might get "can i see pics puhlease". Here I got some great feedback that actually helped me make a really big decision. Just the way it is.

  4. something about the brown headband that makes the RS1 sing! :)

couldn't believe it myself when i compared the two...

btw, there's one pair of vintage available on ebay though that's set to close by tomorrow.

Yeah who woulda thunk it but after owning two vintage RS-1's and having 3 new stock ones the differences to me have been pretty apparent. I did hear the new buttonless one and I thought it sounded pretty good, didnt really hear the glare up top pretty smooth and typical full bodied colored lushness you'd expect from the RS-1.

  5. markl, let me put this to you straight. Pretty much everyone here already knows that you get review samples, and that manufacturers ply you to review their wares. You've alluded to this on Head-fi in the past, it's not a secret. We know, but we've been more or less indifferent until now. Why? Because up until now you've had the good sense to keep it quiet, but now you've decided to be an egotistical jackass and brag about your super special industry insider knowledge and powers, and how it makes you all special. At best, it's goddamn fucking rude and shows a complete lack of class. In smaller words, it makes you look like an asshole.

I concur. Markl I thought you were okay man and I had some respect for you coming on here and at 1st defending your side of things in a very respectful humble manner. But dude you got to get off that high horse your on. You say you are stating facts but these facts and the actual fact of stating said facts makes you look like an arrogant ass, just stop man. You review little ity bitty transducers driven by milliwatts of power, good for you.

  6. Hold on are you talking about yourself in the 3rd person? I thought only NFL wide receivers and NBA all star shooting guards did that.

"Yeah recstar24 is way awesome yeah I know because when you know the recstar24 you rock like the recstar24 ya dig? He be writing reviews and the recstar's ear is golden ya hurd. Yeah I get that I go waaaaaaaaaaaay back like old school headfi, but don't worry I get that that truly I am just trying to help out all you lesser folk who can't rock like the recstar can I mean if its not for the recstar how else you gonna get the goods?"

That is not a purposeful dig at you markl but more a humurous attempt (poorly of course) to show you how others perceive you based on what your write/say and how you convey yourself (more so the fact of what you write about yourself).

  7. Thanks for posting about the K340 - wow your headphile k340 was freaking fantastic! Actually I wish I spent more time with it. I heard that the zana drove it beautifully as well. The one thing that shocked me was your k340 had some great bass going, deep and full. I heard it on the B52 and I wish I gave it a shot on the zana for sure.

  8. I didn't vote as I haven't listened to any of the amps you posted. If I were to get one of those listed based on my research, taking into account impressions of users I have learned to trust their sonic ear, as well as price to apparent value ratio, the one that strikes me the most is the beta 22.

Does that account as recommending something I have never heard? If so, yay!!! I'm cool you drool.

  9. Again, this is what makes me so sad about this site; sincerity and honesty is automatically interpreted as lies and grabage. That's sad for this site, and says more about the interpreter than it does about me. :-[

I think the line in question is:

"I get that I go waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back in the headphone world. To some extent, by virtue of the amount of involvement I've had in the community, and the amount of influence I can sometimes wield"

Now while you may conveying that with the utmost sincerity and honesty, it does kind of come across as self righteous, with a touch of arrogance thrown in as well. While some may believe what you said about yourself, I just would not ever think someone would ever actually say something like that out loud about themself especially on an online forum. Now couple that with what you were saying about who would be able to get the mods done if it weren't for you, there is a mixed message in there.

  10. So do I really need a DAC? Doesn't my soundcard already have one???

Ummm no remember you need to use a DAC between your TT and phono stage, that is how you get the analogy goodness duh

  11. Markl I appreciate you coming on over here into a possible lions den and I gotta say you handled yourself well.

I think some users just have issues with the idea of charging for a service that anyone can do. If people are willing to pay you money for simple mods that are available for anyone to do themselves, more power to you. I think aerius is more concerned about your intent and motivation rather than the actual modding itself, but the reality is there are people out there willing to pay money for things that they could do themselves. And the fact that you seem pretty upfront about wanting to get paid for your time, last time I checked we all get paid for our time in some way or another.

  12. We'll expect before and after pics too. Congratulations Ryan! :prettyprincess:

Sure! Man, I used to be a freak about lettering but it really looks darn sexy without it.

    Before:

And I got a 2nd set coming in Friday, oh lordy :D I am listening to #1 right now and damn its like being reunited with an old friend. Acoustic memory is failing me though as I don't remember the standard cable being able to sound this dynamic with great extension, #2 coming in has the ultrawide. Headsup, I just put up #1 for sale on HF but if anyone is interested hit me up, I don't mind having HC priority.

  13. Hope you don't have to stay late at work, Nate.

Yeah, I'm under some delusion that once I buy a house, I'll have my weekends back, even though I'm well aware I'll most likely be doing stuff to it on weekends (e.g., painting, cleaning, etc).

ha...new homeowner...free weekends...double ha (speaking as a recently new homeowner)

  14. Well....nice to know that you have the option. I can't think of any headphone beside the R10 that is built better than the L3000. The L3000 is very well built. It is also luxurious but the magnesium frame is pretty tough to beat. You are pretty lucky about the confort on those HP1000s. I cound't wear them for more than 20 mins. I love the HP1000 too.

Yeah I agree in fact I think I actually find the HP1000's slightly more comfortable than the RS-1's believe it or not. It actually sits better and is more firm without causing any discomfort whatsoever. However I do have a humongo head and my ears are like bat ears as they are pretty huge (fitted hat size = 7 3/4 I think).

Here's a pic from my wedding ceremony so you get an idea of my melon.

As you can see my head is about 2x the size of my wife's head. With a head like mine grados just happen to be very comfortable, the more metal the better.

  15. recstar24 ,

Dude you are missing out on the L3000 goodness. I still use mine everyday and won't sell it. The L3000 also sound excellent out of Zana Deux man and it is very difficult to find a better closed headphone. Buy one now before it went over 3k. Did I mention that the L3000 is much better built and much more comfortable than the HP1000? Of course, I love the HP2 too but the L3000 just sound better to my ears.

Oh don't worry the door isn't shut completely - local headfier, offering me again a very reasonable and sane deal or at least noticeably lower than what the past l3000's have been going for, at bare minimum I could check them out and unload them and pass the savings to the community. The idea of a high quality bad ass looking insanely built closed headphone is very appealing. The hp1000 is built very well imo just in a very simplistic manner. The l3000 appears to offer a more luxurious experience in that regard especially with the comfort, but comfort is simply not an issue with my and grados.

  16. If HP1000 needs future service, I'm not certain current Grado would step up (I stand corrected if that's not the case).

For the most part you are correct. John won't help you that is for sure, however I did speak with Joe last week and when I asked him if he was still available to service the HP-1000's, he replied "Sure...as long as I am still here..." Gotta love that old school new york humor. He did say as an alternative that I could buy his nephew's SR125 series and buy some flat pads from him. When I told Joe that I actually have the RS-1, Joe replied "ummm...what's that?" God bless the old son of a gun, gotta love it.

Random update - I settled on the HP-2...ummm...actually I settled on 2 of them :D One with the standard cable, one with the ultrawide cable. Definitely was NOT my intention to buy 2 of the freaking things, but I got two offers, one came before the other, the 1st guy didn't get back to me for like a week or so, the 2nd guy was offering a very sane and reasonable price (how shocking), preferred to just get the 1st one, but I didn't want to let the 2nd one go, so who am I to deny any of their joe gradoness. I would imagine I will probably let one of them go in a bit. One of them did have the drivers replaced by Joe in 2005 which is great.

Reasons why I didn't go with the L3000:

    1) Wasn't sure how it would mate with the Zana. I emailed Craig and he definitely loves the phone and its his favorite, but thought it sounded its best on his transformer coupled amps. Also he let me know that the impedance curve is really wacky and all over the place, so you really need an amp that has a very low output impedance to make sure the damping factor is high and keeps the impedance controlled throughout the range. This is probably the reason why impressions on the L3000 can be a bit over the place, classic story of a can being driven to all sorts of different levels. On the other hand, I have been happy in the past with the HP1000 and Zana, really thought it was a nice fit with the meridian, so I am more clear on what I am going to get and expect.

    2) The couple of times I have heard the L3000 really weren't special or "ah ha" moments, whereas I could not possibly count all the numerous ah ha moments i've had with the HP1000. at the chicago meet, the L3000 sounded really good with my moth s2a3 but I no longer own the amp so its a moot point. I had an extended audition with the L3000 being driven by the Krell SACD standard and my EC/SS (what I could bring over the guy's place at the time) and I noticed a couple of different things. Bit of a midrange suckout in relation to the HP1000, didn't quite have the midrange magic of the Grado. Also I noticed a slight coloration in the upper mids, a glare of some sort, like a glassy patina that was on top of everything. Definitely nothing crazy or something so extreme that it would cause you to not like the can, but I guess I just find the Hp1000 to be more transparent and neutral and that is kind of what I am looking for. Obviously I only have a very limited amount of L3000 empirical experience to use to base my decision on, hence why I sought out the advice of you guys and gals.

    3) The L3000 has been referred to as an "euphonic" can or sounding "fun" to some. I feel I have that already - my vintage RS-1's. God damn do those things do so many things right, I actually prefer them and find them superior than the PS-1. The vintage RS-1 is full of coloration but I have not heard a can where those colorations seem to synergize so well together than the RS-1. I really do believe there is enough of a difference between the vintage and current stock, noticeably the tighter upper bass, resulting in more apparent low end extension, less bloat in that area leading from the upper bass into the lower mids, the biggest difference is the lack of glare up top that the current stock RS-1's exhibit. This is based on experience of owning 2 vintage RS-1's and 3 current stock RS-1's in addition to all the meets I've been able to compare them to. For me my fun awesome can is my vintage RS-1, and what I was looking for to compliment her was something more neutral and transparent. Now I am not saying the vintage RS-1 is on the same level as the L3000, the L3000 is definitely more detailed, less colored, more comfortable, more neutral, on paper is a superior phone, but damn I just love the way my rs-1 sounds on my current rig.

I think that covers it. Thanks for the input from everyone. I am excited to be able to directly compare and A/B in my rig the standard vs ultrawide cable, its always been about acoustic memory for me, but probably will end up letting one of them go after I'm done checking them out and seeing which one I prefer if I can even tell a difference.

  17. After reading this thread so far, a couple of you guys (recstar and smeggy) are scaring me just slightly more than a little.

Its kind of like how some guys compare cars to girls, even give them female names. For example, my first car was a 1991 plymouth voyager, a real POS. I called her Daphne. She was a big girl, but she was gentle. Its just one of those things I guess...

  18. How important is midrange magic to you? I think the HP-2 has just a little bit more of it. Just a little.

Sorry, I keep forgetting to bring my L3000 in to work to compare, I'll try to remember this week.

Well to me, the bass and hi end are like 1st impressions when you 1st meet someone. You right away hear how the bass sounds and how the hi end sounds. But the midrange is the true personality of what music is about, IMO. Can't be with a girl that long if she is dull and boring where it counts, right? So I'm a midrange man myself. I need to get together with msport911 who is local to me and has the L3000 and a couple of hp1000's to boot.
