Denon 2910 vs. 3910
Hey guys, I'm in the process of getting a CD-transport at the moment, with an eye for modding later on down the road. For those of you who have heard the modded Denon units, is there a big difference between a modded 2910 and a 3910? If there's a somewhat substantial difference, I'm willing to pocket the difference and go with the 3910. Oh btw, I'm going to have them modded by SACDmods if that makes a difference.

Lavry's XLR out as amp
Do I need to do anything to run balanced headphones out of the XLR outputs on the Lavry? Can I simply get someone to recable the headphones terminated in female XLRs or do I need to do something different? I currently have the jumpers in the Lavry set on balanced output mode.

MPX3 SLAM SE vs. Supra for Grados
Thanks dude for that info, they do look pretty similar. I guess I'll just wait for Mikhail's MOT thread to get all the info.

MPX3 SLAM SE vs. Supra for Grados
Yeah, and I am just curious if the PPX extreme uses the same circuit as the regular PPX? I think Earl might know.

More info please on the PPX extreme? I noticed in the pictures that it was running 300Bs, sweet.

Transport with AES digital out?
Well, I'm looking for a CD transport that has AES digital out, because the coaxial input on my Lavry is already taken up by my computer. My budget is around $500.

The Great Dac search
I'm curious about this myself, and I'll soon find out if there's any difference when I get a CD transport for those times when I don't feel like turning on the computer. I'll report what I hear.

The Great Dac search
I hesistate to give up the Lavry because its headphone amp feature is pretty handy for my W5000s. I'm trying to keep my system as minimalist as I can be. However, I did see a Stello DP200 on Audiogon on the other day, but when I contacted the seller, it was sold already That unit would've satisfied all my needs: it's essentially a DA220 combined with a real pre-amp/headamp with multiple analog inputs, instead of just a source with volume control like the Lavry. If I had gotten that Stello, I would've had everything I wanted in one box: a good DAC, volume control, analog input for my radio tuner, remote control, and headamp.

Dude I've been taking it for the team, I have the most unconventional setup among all the Berkeley people lol

x2 please Besides, if you don't like it, I can easily take it off your hands

The Great Dac search
Tough luck dude, there are no "safe" purchases in audio unless you hear it first.

Since you have both, I'd like to hear your impressions on Lavry vs. Transporter

Headroom's Balanced Desktop
@grawk: I'm mainly interested in this product as an amp, not as a DAC. It's pretty convenient though to travel around with, since all I need would be a laptop, that's why I will probably end up getting the DAC, but just not at the very beginning.

Headroom's Balanced Desktop
You may be right, but at this point, I don't feel an urge to get another DAC. Besides, Headroom's designs are modular, so that if I feel like getting the DAC, I can always add it later. But in the short-term, I don't spend as much.

Headroom's Balanced Desktop
I'm about 90 percent sure that I'll get this with the home module. I'm currently not going to get the DAC since I like my Lavry fine as it is. The only thing that I could wish for is pre-amp outs to drive my power amp directly. But it's not a deal breaker by any means.

Headroom's Balanced Desktop
Yup, this one is on my radar as well

Wavelength Brick
Woo, take one for the team.

W5000s
I hear you on the midrange, it's definitely a little bit odd, but it's odd in a way that doesn't bother me. However, I couldn't live with these as my one and only pair though.
-
W5000s
So far the only critique I have is that the W5000s don't hit as hard or as snappy on drums as I would like. There's this touch of hollowness compared to my K1000 rig, but considering that my K1000 setup is about four times more expensive, it's not a deal-breaker for me.

W5000s
Yeah, the W5000s are not going to be my primary cans: but for those times when I don't want to leak that much sound, I think they are very good. They are just very fun to listen to for me. I'm running them out of my Lavry's headphone jack, not sure if I'm going to get another amp since they are not going to be primary phones. Boy am I glad that I convinced my roommate to get these

W5000s
Man, I really like these, I might just to get a pair for myself later on: it's the best closed headphone I've ever outside of the R10s (haven't heard the L3000s yet).
