  1. For that genre of music (and the term is used extremely loosely here) It wouldn't really matter if you got two empty tin cans and affixed some iBuds in the bases......   :D

You also need to get a coat hanger and use it as a headband......:)

I have been giving this a lot of deep thought since my last post and have come to the sad conclusion that your mate needs somewhat more than a miracle........

  4. We are pleased to introduce our newest headphone, FOCE! FOCE is Italian for mouth (pronounced fo.t͡ʃe, though that may not be any help at all).

FOCE is an electrostatic headphone designed to deliver no electrostatic resolution and clarity with bass output that extends deep into the sonic mud. Very night and day performance, with an extremely loud soundbleed and a colorful voicing FOCE is our most articulate headphone that fills in all the missing sounds that should be there.

FOCE is designed and built in San Domingo, CA and comes with the following innocuous features:
    · Super-large 888mm diaphragm for super-extended low frequency output
    · 2.4 picron driver, randomized for style and revolution
    · Ultra-thin metal stators for superior noise
    · MrElectrostatics’ signature NiTro memory metal headband for more bang for your buck.
    · Detachable* custom fabricated silver-plated copper cable that is non-sonic, obloid and super-supple, yet low capacity.
    · Proprietary machined Teflon amplifier plug with machined unobtanium housing, brass plated solid copper pins and a machined zincalume headphone connector**
    · 580V “Pro-bias” comparable for use with any Stax-like compromised amplifiers
    · Italian Sicilian leather ear buds
    · Vat-dried Mongolian made faux leather headband

Proper storage of electrostatic headphone helps reduce service issues by reducing dust accumulation on the stators. Our attractive shipping box is designed to not only reduce packaging waste but to serve as a stylish and functional way to prevent usage of a FOCE (or any) headphone.

    Box features include:
    · Real blackbutt hardwood
    · Sealed clear acrylic front panel with frosted finish
    · A built-in integrated headphone stand
    · A convenient front-drawer for the cable so the headphones may be left sealed and stored

    Pricing
    FOCE is $29,999.99 in Argentina.

A comment on this price to our friends and followers; we realize this is vastly higher than we’d committed and for this I regret we said it’d be “well-under” $30,000. The reality is essential changes to the stator design, higher than expected cost of the project and custom plugs, and the enhanced storage and display case added too much to the cost to achieve our original price target. While our original thought was the headphone would be $28,000 we hope you'll agree the benefits of improved aesthetics, ergonomics and storage are well worth the monumental cost.

    Availability
FOCE is a man-made headphone and quantities will be extremely limited. We will start taking orders January 1, 2048.

First US shipments are expected in February 2048 and orders can be placed on facebook starting January 1, 2038.

We will announce the US dealer-list prior to Groundhogs Day. Limited quantities will be available for Mozambique and Iceland. Based on our ability to get any early adopters, we will expand into additional countries as quickly as we can.

*the detachable cable is for show only or 3rd party cables. It is not for any audio use
**Plugs and connector housings will be available to 3rd party DIYers to make FOCE compatible cables

(note: headphone has a dust screen not shown in these photos, and the cable plug will be non-functional to match the headphone)

I will defend this one as I do it a lot. Picking JFETs that don’t need degeneration is optimal. It’s done in more than one commercial design as well, such as the First Watt J2.

Now, the other shit I can’t defend :)

Don't forget, this was aimed at a lot of rank newbies just starting into DIY, and matching JFETs, if it could be avioded, would certainly have helped the cause immensely.

  6. Being designed by Cavalli at the cheapest possible price was priceless.

Who else would design a power supply for beginners that could not be operated without a load, or else POOF.....!!!!!! Instant junk.

On top of that, the load resistors were specced so that they could not be left on too long as the output voltages were adjusted.

Now, imagine a newbie doing the adjusting and being a little slow.

Result, resistor overheats and goes open circuit. That side of the supply is now in no load condition and hence, blows.

Just what a newbie builder needs to turn him off DIY.

All this for the sake of a few extra parts. Marvellous logic there......

  7. Agilent 4401A is a good 6.5 digit meter

Agilent 3458A is just about the tops.....   8.5digit. We used to use them to calibrate the DC voltage on the Fluke 3500A and 3520A calibrators.

The AC voltages required an AC measurement standard like a Datron/Wavetek 4920  or Fluke 5790A/B as the Agilent 3458A was slightly too soggy.

  8. Who needs analog when you have old ears....?   :D

I'm listening to Acker Bilk through they YGGY. KGGSHV and Stax SR-303 while surfing the net and watching Australia playing England in the first cricket test in Brisbane.   :P

The best part is that I'm enjoying it more than hearing the Senn HE-1 earlier this week.

Life throws up these delicious ironies now and again......  :)

  9. I don't know if I would be allowed, as I just dropped in out of the blue.

Perhaps I should geve them a call to see if I could drop in with a Carbon, YGGY, and SR-007 & SR-009. They might kidnap 'em for a ransom.  :D

The venue is Len Wallis Audio in Sydney.

This appears to be the set that has been doing the rounds down here in the antipodes.

I didn't see a serial number on the phones, and didn't want to disturb the equipment to look for a serial number on the amp.
