  1. Every couple years or so I email Sound Organisation to see if there is a Rega dealer in my area, never having any hope that there will be. I've been buying all my gear via the internet since I got into this game in 2006, and as much as I love the many benefits internet shopping provides, I have always wanted to form a relationship with somebody local. I like doing business with people I know, which is probably why I've completely stopped using ebay, audiogon, or even head-fi, I'd much rather buy and sell my crap here rather than deal with the teeming mass of insanity that is the open interwebs market.

Lo and behold they get back with me, and there is a new hi fi dealer not to far from me: http://www.ellingtonhifi.com/

The owner emails me and tells me about all his brands. He carries Rega (he is the only Rega dealer in Alabama), VPI, Quadraspire, which are brands  I have some familiarity with, and some other brands as well: Clearaudio (never really been impressed by anything they've done) Dynaudio speakers, AMR, IFI Micro, Octave, and T+A.

I told him my situation straight up, that I'm not in the market to buy right now because I'm out of work until later in the summer, but would still love to come back and check out his shop and listen some stuff, but didn't want to waste his time. He was really friendly in his reply, saying that he is about to get a pair of Joseph Audio Perspectives in, and would love for me to come by and spin some records and hang out, no pressure to buy or anything. I also saw on twitter he was spinning Widespread Panic, so I know he's a major dude.

Anyone ever heard any Joseph Audio stuff? Generally it looks way out of my price range (the perspectives run ~$11,000/pair) but I'd be stoked to hear a crazy expensive speaker like that, and it appears to be well reviewed.

I guess there is no real point to this post, other than to express my happiness that my next turntable purchase could be in person with a real live human being.

I also think its a testament to the steady growth in appeal of hi fi that a dealer has opened up in Loxley, AL of all places.

And I'd love to finally hear a VPI table after reading countless reviews of their stuff.

Anyone have any decent local audio dealers they've formed a relationship with? I guess I could use some tips on etiquette and whatnot, since this will all be new to me.

  2. Initial response:  yes, at least for a couple more episodes.  Don't read the rest of this, unless you need further convincing.  It's best to go in cold, and not know what you're getting into.  I love being surprised and Luther did not disappoint.

Stopping here, will proceed for at least a few more episodes. Will report back if I get into it.

  3. As much as I love String I found the first episode of Luther quite awful and never followed up. Stereotypical angry cop with the wife leaving him, and that villain girl was ridiculous. The episode started out interesting and very quickly became stupid.

    Sooooo should I keep watching?

BTW Al and whoever else pushed me were correct on The Killing. I was really bored at first but all the build up in the first season led to a really engaging second season. I loved the development of our two leads.

Continuing my unemployed until August 1st pattern of watching craploads of Netflix after studying for the CPA exam in the mornings, I've been watching Sons of Anarchy Season 1. A friend of mine describes this show to me as big dumb fun, and that's pretty accurate. Fine art it ain't but its entertaining and I do care about some of the characters.

  4. DId this just come out, or something?  Do they have Pinkerton, as well?

Duke and Louis - The Great Reinion MFSL

Came out a little while ago, last year I think? Pinkerton just came out.

Sounds great, but then again IIRC the original mastering didn't sound too bad either. The vocals and guitar work are particularly clear on the MFSL, today was my first listen and I really enjoyed it.

  5. I love the GTA series and am therefore excited for the PC release.

The use of multiple lead characters has me concerned. I hope its not too complicated. I get confused when I have to control too many characters. This is the reason I could never get into any of the Dragon Age games. I prefer the more solitary gameplay of the Elder Scrolls.

Preservation Hall Jazz Band. And the bartender could not make a Sazerac. Music is making up for it though.

Love me some PHJB! Seen them so many times now I've lost count.

In a world where music fans crave authenticity, it doesn't get more real than PHJB.

Or Neil Young & Crazy Horse.

  7. I have not been a McDonald's fan since I was a child, and really not so much back then.

I was there within the last 6 months or so, and I was shocked at the prices! You could eat at a decent diner or similar for what it cost to eat at the golden arches now.

Why would someone spend $8.00 on McJunk? No offense meant to those who like their food, but I just don't get it.

That's a good point. It could be argued you can still order a couple things off the dollar menu and keep it cheap, but once you are hitting the $8-9 mark I'd rather just get some pad thai or a curry or something.

I gave up eating fast food on the reg years ago. Still grab the occasional greasy bag when I'm on the road.

  8. Posty, sorry I missed this: have you tried the 800 with the B22 yet?

no I have not. the only time I heard the HD800 was at Canjam LA, out of whatever Tyll had them hooked up to, I can't remember. Headamp Desktop I'm guessing.

  9. Thanks everyone for the comments regarding the B22. All my headphones have been on the lush side for a while, but now when I want lush/fun I just listen to the Rega RS1s (speakers not grados) which sound awesome just sitting on my desk. The ESL63s are not in use at the moment, so I want something that gets at the heart of the recording, for better or worse, as Reks describes it.

I'm loathe to give up my beta22 after all naaman did to build it, and Fitz did to fix it, so I'll probably give the HD800 a whirl with it for a while. Owning a Headamp GS-X/GS-1 has always been a dream of mine though.

start my new gig in august, and will be making more money than I've ever made (still not a lot!) so hopefully I can save up for a while for the cans.

  10. Hey now-

I've been rocking two headphones for a while, the RS-1 (my fourth pair, I shouldn't sell these again) and the AT-W3000ANV. The aftermarket for the W3000ANV is suddenly pretty awesome now (a pair just went for $1300 on HF), and while I enjoy listening to them, and they are beautiful, I find myself wanting something for accurate for critical listening.

I've wanted to try the HD800 in my home rig for a while, heard them at meets and was always impressed, subjectively I always enjoyed their strengths and never was bother by their purported weaknesses. However, my home amp is a beta22 on set on low gain (gain of 2 I think, its been a while since I read about how gain works on the beta). Can anyone speculate how this gain would work with a high impedance can like the HD800? anyone have any personal experience?

    thanks!

New Album Hesitation Marks out 9.03.13. Preorder available now on nin.com

I dig the new single, but its hard to separate my joy at new NIN from my critical side. It has a great sound, more of an old schoolish dance/industrial feel, with some effects thrown in reminiscent of TDS-era NIN. Single has more of a steady pace, no huge heavy guitar parts or anything, but it still sounds great.

NIN also announced a huge tour with supporting acts Explosions in the Sky and GYBE. In the immortal words of Trey Monkeystasio, get phacking pumped phannerz:

  12. Galaxy S4 Active looks like exactly what I have been waiting for. No more having to take off gloves and no using a waterproof bag in my jersey. Awesome.

That S4 is a brilliant idea. Such an obvious move to basically make a phone with a protective case already on it, much less one that can be submerged in water. Surprising no one has thought of it until now, given the huge market for after market phone cases. I am extremely happy with my Note 2, but the S4 is the first phone that makes me squirm a little for an upgrade.

Posty, I use the flip cover from Samsung. Replacement back cover plus flip cover. I hoks that between a finger or two and have maybe 3 drops in 6 months? Better record than my otter boxes and seidios and others in the past.

Chris, like I sais elsewhere, looks great, and I hope they make a Note X Active.

    **BRENT**

Good to hear a positive review of the flip cover, I've considered it many times.

  13. To my memory, there are less wallowing Larsens, more different storylines, and overall a good follow-up.  Pace is always going to be relatively slow, I imagine, but S.3 started off faster than expected.  Just suck it up and watch it, Jack.  :police:

its not like i have anything better to do. :) thanks al.
