  1. http://www.svsound.com/speakers/ultra-series

Basically this is a (A) talk me down or (B) dew eet thread.

So as I indicated elsewhere I passed the CPA exam, people around the office keep asking what I'm going to do to celebrate. I was thinking about buying some speakers for the HT, the SVS Ultra Towers.

Why towers instead of bookshelves, since I've been so happy with bookshelves plus sub? Well, if I'm not happy running the towers full range, I can always cross them over at 40 or 60 and throw a sub back in the mix, effectively making them bookshelf speakers again, but I have the benefit of BAD ASS looking towers. I really can't get over how awesome those things look. I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder etc, but man I just love their look.

My SVS cylinder sub is the longest running piece of audio equipment I own. I did own SVS's previous line of M-Series speakers, and actually hated them. Completely uninvolving. What I've read is the Ultra series was designed by a guy SVS stole from PSB, and I'm really impressed with my PSB B6 bookshelves, so thats a good indicator.

Other downside is my receiver (Denon 2112CI) might not have the juice to push the Towers to their full potential, but I can always change that up later.

SVS has a 45 day return policy, and they cover shipping both ways, so there is really no risk on my part to try them out, other than having to deal with repackaging big heavy speakers etc.

Every professional review of the speakers is pretty positive (but what is the last negative audio review you've read?). I don't think the Ultras are too popular, as there are not a ton of impressions out there about them. I imagine even with the 45 day return policy, they are pricey and people don't want to mess with the pain of returning them if they don't work out.

Thought I would post this on the off chance someone has actually heard these at a show, or just wants to wildly throw opinions around.

  2. Well I got mine today. Doesn't work with the Sony Z Ultra, fine, I haven't been able to get a USB DAC to work with the phone, even though it is supposedly a native feature of 5.0. Maybe its the phone, maybe I'm doing something wrong.

Hooked it up to the computer and all kinds of terrible noises came out of my Shure SE215, now the left driver doesn't work at all. So either my phones were broken before I plugged them into the Fulla, or the Fulla broke them somehow.

Still I dumbly plugged my V-Moda M100 in to the Fulla, the noise is just ridiculous. So my Fulla is definitely broken. Pretty bad experience for a first Schiit purchase.

Please note I'm not saying the Fulla broke my SE215, I can't definitively say that and I don't even know if thats possible. But I know the SE215 worked fine a few weeks ago and has worked fine for years.

Anyway I'll be contacting Schiit about this of course.

  3. Still no MQA support.

I almost want to send an email to Schiit asking about MQA support just to see what they would say.

Before ordering the Fulla I was looking forward to the upcoming Oppo portable DAC/amp, but Schiit beat them to the punch.

  4. it's stupid good for $1200 on day one. I tend to decide on gear by listening to the new thing for a week or so pretty exclusively then go back to my baseline set up for comparison. So far it is astonishingly clear, clean and balanced top to bottom. I am missing some of the wetness I get in the midst with the jh13s or the metric halo/extreme set up. As an amp it is way cleaner than the extreme but maybe not as musical.

Agreed, I find it is missing the sweetness you might find with other gear, but in terms of detail retrieval and faithfulness to the recording its hard to find fault.

  5. well my Metric Halo is acting up and need to send it in for service so I ordered the Oppo.  Gives me a solid 30 days to decide if I like it enough i keep it as a utility infielder or at the worst ship it back to Mountain View.

sweet, looking forward to your impressions.

if nothing else I know you'll love the screen and fit n' finish.

  6. Keep an eye out

Ipad -> Tidal App -> AirPlay -> Apple TV , although that ,may lead to 44.1 -> 48K resampling  ...

Android App -> Chromecast, Anyone ?

    This

LMS -> Any LMS client device -> digital out (coax / optical / usb on touch)  ....

All feeding your Denon  ( assuming it has non HDMI digital ins )

I have android, so I'd really like to be able to stream tidal to the chromecast. That would be ideal. This is what I currently do with Google Play Music.

I haven't seen the little cast icon in the android tidal app yet.

  7. Really?  I mean, unless its DAC is competitive with what I've got coming out of my computer, I just don't see it.

I'm thinking of an HDMI type device that would pass the digital signal along to the receiver, so yeah I'd be relying on the receivers DAC, but I think my Denon receiver sounds pretty good, especially when you throw audyssey into the picture.

  8. I am just planning to use the Fire Stick for Amazon prime streaming (instead of the PS3). Apple TV for everything else. Is the Fire stick all that bad?

Oh no no no, its not bad. In fact the main reason I bought it was to get access to Prime original programming, but I haven't watched any of those shows yet.

I just like the Apple TV much better for typical stuff: hulu, Netflix, renting movies, hbo go, etc. I'm probably just so used to the Apple TV layout, its been my primary way to consume video content for years.

Now if a device comes along, which I'm sure it will, that supports Tidal, I can see myself going over to that.

  9. I apologize in advance for this, pulled from the headphones subreddit:

A pair of Beats headphones walk into a bar. The bartender says, "We don't like Beats around here", to which the Beats replies "sorry man we're not looking for any treble."

    it made me smile.

  10. Do it!

I think I just really want to hear the LS50 which is why I want to buy them. But I'm so happy with the PSBs in my HT I'm hesitant to change them up.

I really need a new sub before I do anything speaker-wise. There will always be good LS50 used deals out there.

But a 3.1 setup with an LS50 for all three speakers would look so tight.

  11. Christopher Ward 15% off anything is on now.

Herman Miller 15% off anything is on now.

For fountain pens, nibs.com (Classic Fountain Pens, aka John Mottishaw's store) is offering 25% off all pre owned Omas pens in stock, and 50% off the Pelikan M600 Marine Blue Demo, or $238. That's a great deal on a beautiful pen, I'm tempted myself.

  12. Slayer/Suicidal Tendencies/Exodus in Atlanta

I'm not super familiar with Exodus but know a lot of the old metal bands love those guys. They put on a great opening set, high energy, obviously happy to be playing music live.

I've been listening to ST since I was a kid but have never seen them live. Happy to report Cyco Miko is still an animal, and the rest of the band are kick ass as well. A fast, solid, intense set. Muir actually had a lot of strangely inspirational banter, of the "you can do anything if you put your mind to it" variety but with a lot more profanity and anger, it was pretty great.

Slayer of course killed it. Super clean stage setup, in fact one of the cleanest I've ever seen. Could hardly see any wires anywere, just neat rows of Marshall amps. Super loud, super fast, super intense. A drink got thrown at Tom Araya during the first song which clearly pissed him off, but he calmly told the crowd "thank you for the drink, but I don't drink when I play". During the Angel of Death closer, big Hanneman/Heineken banner dropped down, with "Angel of Death" and "Still Reigning" written above and below his name. Pretty spectacular moment.

As an aside, we got a great rate at the Ritz Carlton a few blocks from the venue, so why the hell not stay there? When we arrived to check in, also checking in was the Cleveland Browns and their entire organization, who were met by a crowd of screaming Browns fans in town for the game. I've never shared a hotel with an NFL team.
