  1. They do 1411kpbs? But it's FLAC. What is going on here?

30 day trial was for people who signed up early for info(VIP access). 7 day is the standard trial. I got a 404 error when I signed up so my 30 day was "used." I messaged them and they got me set back up within half a day (it was late at night on a launch weekend.)

FWIW, I used Spotify for background music too. With Tidal, I have been actually listening to stuff while at work. I got a good 5.5-6 hours in today after a last minute mandatory OT day. I was even complimented on mymusical stylings by my neighbor (I have Grados at work), so we would up talking music for a few hours (and working a little too.)

    **BRENT**

CBR Flac (redbook) is 1411. Most flac are vbr, for some reason tidal prefers to stream at cbr.

  2. I'm going to see fucking Primus tomorrow. So stoked. This tour they are doing Set I Primus songs, Set II they are covering Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, then encore with some more Primus stuff. I've been listening to a lot of Primus and getting excited.

Next weekend I'll be in Atlanta for Slayer/Suicidal Tendencies/Exodus.

  3. From the manufacturer:

    HOT – Headphone Optimized Transducer

Headphone Transducers or HOT for short, is the new UEF headphone filter that dramatically improves headphone / amplifier performance.

Nearly one year in development, HOTs were voiced with Audeze LCD-3 and Sennheiser HD 800 stereo headphones. Amplification included a Luxman P-700 solid-state amplifier and numerous tube based headphone amplifiers. When HOT is used with your favorite cans you hear sound that gets out of your head as well as smoother more articulate highs with improved bass. If you’ve been looking for more holographic sound with smoother highs and increased resolution, you’ve gotta try HOT!

Nothing beats a HOT set of cans:

Whether you’re a seasoned headphone fanatic or an open air two-channel audiophile looking to explore the magic of personal audio, HOT maximizes your enjoyment with increased resolution and smoothness in the world’s most holographic headphone experience.

    Review from head-fi:

I have the Synergistic Research Headphone Optimizer Transducer (HOT) in my dedicated headphone system. Senheisser 800 cans with Double Helix cables, Eddie Current Zana Deux tube amp, Marantz SA11S-2 SACD player.

This device gives a major improvement to my systems sound. Soundstage detail is improved. Images are precisely placed. Harmonic textures are more clearly heard. I do not hear any added brightness to the system. Instead the music is more flowing with a sense of ease and improved transmitted emotion.

I am enthusiastic having the HOT in my system and after listening for the past two weeks, it is staying in my system. I do hope you are able to audition this device. They have not shipped any of the transducers to England yet but will soon. Another way to audition the Hot is to E-mail the Cable Company here in the USA. They do offer the 30 day money back trial. Europian buyers are responsible for shipping- $14.80 each way to England.

I look forward to other head-fiers impressions of the Synergistic Research Headphone Optimized Transducer in their systems.

    ...

My listening experience is similar to the Cable Company reports in many ways. The soundstage definitely is now wider and deeper such that the music is no longer inside the physical head but extends outward. This is very pleasing sonically. The sound is also more articulate but not due to increased brightness. There is less grain hence the relaxed and flowing analogy in my earlier post. Listening to multi instruments or vocals it is so much easier to pick out individual voices. Last night was a Vivaldi concerto night with Rachel Podger- Channel Classic SACD disc recorded with the fabulous Grimm DAC. I know this disc well. The placement of the individual musicians is now so better defined with the HOT in place. The improved articulation allows the harpsicord and lute to be heard more clearly. Rachel"s violin has more emotion and energy.

I was concerned that maybe the HOT unit extending out of the headphone jack would cause a stress on my amps jack. I do not think this is a problem now that it is actually in place. I have taken a paper cup, cut it to size and placed it under the Hot unit to provide support. This may not be necessary in practice but now I do not worry about stress at the jack imput.

I am looking forward to tonight's listening- Stevie Ray Vaughn and some Ray Brown jazz.

fuck yeah less grain. i HATE GRAIN.

  4. I've always used cheap sanus stands and they perform the job of elevating the speaker the appropriate height off the ground.

I don't doubt that good speaker stands can make a difference in audio, but my speakers are like $500, I'm not going to spend a shitload on speaker stands.

Those solidsteel stands look cool though. Trying to figure out if they would work in my den.

  5. My biggest issue with the SR-007 comfort is that I have to pull the earcups down pretty far go get them over my ears. So for us "larger headed users" they aren't the most comfortable. The SR-009s however are very comfortable!

I was never able to get the fit right either. A lot of headphones just won't fit my noggin. I think my head is more cone like and long than big, causes issues with just about every one size fits all can.

  6. Well, haven't found anything on Spotify that I can't get on Tidal (the same things appear to be missing on both, with a couple of exceptions, all in Tidal's favor with one glaring exception -- Prokofiev complete piano music by frederic chiu, which has been on and off Spotify). Add to that the lossless compression, and I'm switching. Only thing is, I can't get Tidal at work, so I'll probably allow a month or two transition before I quit.

Something I haven't checked yet -- is there a way to add local files to Tidal? I keep forgetting to check that when i'm at home.

No way to add local files.

  7. Tyll,  Do you think it is worth it just to use as a DAC with the DSHA-1?  I'm currently using the Pico DAC + DSHA-1 in the office.

FWIW Shelly, after a brief evening of listening, using the DAC in the HA-1 for both amps, I slightly prefer the Supra as a headphone amp. The HA-1 amp is great, definitely not bright, but there is a slight hardness in the midrange (male vocals) and less bass bloom. Years of loud live amplified music have made me prefer bass bloom, YMMV.

Impressions subject to change as my brain burns in, and I haven't tried the balanced output on the HA-1 yet.

I see nothing to complain about regarding the DAC in the HA-1. Haven't compared to the Neko yet directly.

  8. No issues with logging in and out for me, that would be annoying. Also LastFM scrobbling works fine for me. This is on Android.

Just discovered they have a shitload of grateful dead, like everything. Road trips dicks picks complete Europe 72 etc. Enough for me to probably sell off my extensive dead CD collection.

  9. Watched the last episode last night and I thought the series finished strongly.

I guess I could have lived without one or two seasons but overall, it was a real pleasure to watch unfold.

Agreed, just watched the last episode today. Great finale. The whole series was a slow burn, full of really wonderful performances, not a single stinker in the whole cast.

  10. we were pretty careful, but its possible.

i tend to get nervous even approaching the area in general.

I try to impart that to my family but my dad's response to this was to charge at one of the speakers yesterday holding a rack shelf with the spikes pointed towards the speaker....just to mess with me.  I almost died.

(we were putting everything back in place)

    LOL dad sounds awesome.

  11. Well I updated the drivers on my little wifi USB stick, working much better now. The TiDAL chrome client works great, songs start in just a few seconds. Sounds great, works great. All in all a really impressive launch for this service, I expected it to be much buggier. I anticipate I'll be a subscriber for a while to come.

  12. Just a heads up you may prefer the web player in Chrome (only browser supporting "hifi" bitrates currently) over desktop native app. The web, desktop and mobile players all seem to have been created at different times/different teams, with (at least on OS X) the desktop being the oldest ("favourites", above description issues not in browser, etc.) by far. Interesting each has different options for account settings (an avatar here, a nickname there, etc.). No obvious sound issues with any though.

The PC app is disappointing. I was really hoping for an option to be able to download and store the files locally, much like you can on the phone. I know this is an issue specific to me, but my internet on my PC sucks. I have Uverse so the router is in the other room, and the signal is choppy at best on the PC. I was hoping to accumulate a large TiDAL library on my desktop so I didn't have to worry about the songs taking ages to load.

Having said that, the songs do play eventually in the browser, and once they start playing they play all the way through. That's better than I can say for the performance of the Google Play web app, which would get hung up in the middle of songs frequently, depending on the strength of my connection at that time.

I guess I could invest in a WiFi repeater or something like that, would be useful for general web browsing on the desktop as well.

Regarding available albums, first impressions are selection is not quite as good as Google Play (which isn't quite as good as Spotify).

    Random TiDAL album tidbits:

-Only one Arcade Fire album available (Reflektor, their newest)

-All of LCD Soundsystem is available, except for Sounds of Silver! The best record is missing. Disappointing.

-Lots of newer shit is on there though, like the new Ben Frost I mentioned earlier, the new Primus, new Perfect Pussy, new White Lung.

I do hope they eventually offer offline listening for the PC app, but I'm happy to have it on the phone. I'm happy enough with the service to keep it for a while. We'll see what happens moving into the future.

  13. I signed up, at first glance it has a lot of the records I currently have in Google Play, and the android app is pretty slick. similar to google play but actually functions better. Will check out the PC app when I get home.

This could be a game changer for me and my listening habits if it pans out.

EDIT: first listen on my phone > V-Moda M100, listened to Ben Frost's "Aurora", a new release I've been listening to a lot lately, experimental electronic/analog slightly scary noise type music. Sounds really really great, I am happy.
