  1. well, the one i heard was stock, and while i wouldn't say it was great (i'm admittedly pretty jaded when it comes to sources), it was definitely very good for the money, certainly better than the Dialogue II i once owned (though that was mostly because the DAC-AH had a much lower noise floor, they sounded pretty similar, otherwise).

    Hi Reks

I have 3 unmodded DACs, a DAC-AH, Zhaolu D-2 and a Constantine. While reading through granodemostasa's DAC search thread I A-B'd the DAC-AH and the Constantine. (I use a Dayton glass cable btw, for no particular reason. >:D) I never heard the Dialogue II but the Constantine sounded much better than the DAC-AH through the GS-1, foobar 9.5, 32bit, KS, Bob Dylan, Modern Times, 320kbps, 650s. :)

Not much of a test, but there it is.

  2. Interesting read... took me 3 days on and off... but no consensus? ???

It seems there are a few contenders but from what I read the race seems too close to call?

    Benchmark

    Lavry

    Channel Islands

    Stello

    Apogee

At this level would it be safe to assume that synergy, rather than performance, makes the choice?

Thanks for going to all the trouble compiling this.

  3. Glad you got it, Nick. Be careful with the battery. Per the manual, it should give you 50-ish hrs up and running, but it's more like 15. Since it's never supposed to be allowed to go dead, and mine has now three times, counting when it arrived, just keep it charged. I'd send my back to Larry, except I don't know if I'd see it again, or if doing so would make a difference, since the battery's been a problem in a few. I'm waiting to see what others experience.

    Hi Boo

Just a question. Will it play when the battery is dead if you plug it in?

  4. Helpful suggestions, thanks. Looks like maybe two external hard drives for me; one for backup (I need one for that anyway) and one for data. And, I-D, I agree about re-ripping the collection; it can be a fun process if you have enough beer.

I need to think about the external music drive, do I make it a local drive or go NAS?

USB 2.0 is 480 Mbps and FireWire is 400 Mbps but with a better throughput, how fast is your LAN speed? are you 10-100 Mbps or 10-1000 Mbps?

  5. External HD or a NAS box will be your best bet for storage. I think you should just keep your collection fully lossless and then just convert to lossy whenever you need to add/change whats on your ipod and then delete the lossy files again.

I'm one of those thats not a big fan of the DAC-1 but you won't find anything thats clearly superior for the same price.

How do you feel about the Lavry DA10?

  6. I am in the plasma camp,I have a 42 panasonic in my bedroom,& will eventually replace my 35xbxr Sony in my living room with a Pioneer 50inch.I Find the Plasmas look more natural to me.Looks good from any angle & no motion blur.

I'm in the plasma camp for the same reasons, but I have a 42 Samsung in my bedroom....

    I've seen the 42 Panasonic, it's better.

  7. I've seen plenty of skeletons, but the difference with the Zillamatic is that the gears and such are black -- if you go back to the beginning of the thread and read forward, you can actually historically watch me develop my fixation for blackblackerblackest.

    Hey Dusty

I had a look at the site you linked to.... an interesting and appealing watch....

    orig.jpg

but it looks like neither the movement nor the numbers are actually black, but instead are covered by a black glass... if you look at the date window, the date appears as a black number on a white background and if you look carefully you can also see part of the number 2 peaking through, also black number on a white background, but at the same time you can see the rest of the numbers are black on black and since the back of the watch shows a silver colored movement, my guess is the front of the movement is silver, the date wheel is white with black numbers, all covered by black glass and above that, silver hands and hour markers.... :-) unless I'm looking at the wrong watch....

  8. Disagree if you must. You may be right. I've not heard either the M^3 or Woo, but outside of DIY amps, which would be the way to go if you could, what other amps under $400 new can drive K340s as well as sound decent with a range of cans, especially if you're interested in the small footprint of solid state, which I am? I also think the Heed was over-hyped, but that's a separate issue. What headphones were you using? It's not great with 650s, that's for sure, but has done decently with most everything else I've tried.

@op, enjoy your opera. If there comes a time you might want to try out something different, you will.

    880s and 650s...

this is a difficult medium to converse in, but could you explain what you mean when you say it's not great with 650s?

  9. Hey...I like my Heed! It's really one of the best little amps out there for under $400 (I paid $340 new), can drive the more difficult headphones like K340 easily, has a small footprint, and after Thrice tweaked it a little (changed the cord and threw blackgates in the power supply), it's sq to dollar value is about the best I've heard if you aren't a DIY person (yet). It's not the greatest amp, and is a little dark, but even if it's FOTM status has waned, don't be hating on the Heed. It's good.

I've yet to hear a Meier amp.

    Hi Boo

I'm sorry to have to disagree. Maybe Thrice's tweaks made all the difference in the world, but my experience with the heed was the opposite of yours. I found it to be an over priced, over hyped, mediocre amp, that was not in the same league as my Woo3 or my M^3. I got it right before this meet

    standard.jpg

and sold it right after, to another NYer who quickly sold it as being only"10 days old."

IMHO the Heed was extremely disappointing.

    Sorry
