  1. I'm using the Constantine and DA10 in a bedroom rig. Amps are Lehmann Black Cube Linear and Stax SRM-T1W.

I use a HeadAmp KGSS as my primary amp in another room, along with the Raptor and AT-HA5000 for dynamics.

I haven't heard significant differences between various toslink optical cables I've tried.

You have some nice stuff E...........

  2. I used to own a Dialogue II and currently have a Constantine USB and Lavry DA10. I think the Constantine is much better than the Dialogue II, which was too warm and thick-sounding and lacking details. The Constantine also lacks details vs. the DA10, but it can sound very pleasant sometimes with jazz music or slow female vocals.

I use an AirPort Express, MacBook optical output and an old Sony CDP as transport with the Constantine and DA10. Overall I prefer the DA10's clearer and more detailed sound over the Constantine.

An Audio-Technica optical cable with mini-plug on one end and standard toslink on the other works well, no adapter necessary.

What amp are you using with the Constantine/DA10?

  3. I dont know if this is the right subforum but whatever

If you had only had $500 to put a good headphone rig together, then what components would you choose? If you choose computer as the source, the computer doesn't count towards the $500.

    Hi Jin

What have you been up to since Babylon?

The Constantine and M^3 you listened to at the meet would probably come in for around what you want to spend, not including the cans. If you could manage a little more money, I second the 650s, but I think you said you liked the Grado sound, so that's going to be your call.

I recently A-B'd the Constantine with my DAC-AH (which I usually use with this Portaphile Maxxed on one of my other computers)

and the Constantine was much better so I'd go that way.... I saw a recommendation for a GL, but Asr had his SE with power supply connected to my rig at the previous NY meet

and I felt that Thrice's Rockhopper M^3 had a much more robust sound signature, similar to Jack's silver Woo3 (that I also think you listened to).

Justin's little Pico really looks nice. I didn't listen to it long enough to comment but

if I'm not mistaken I think you want to run it from your lap top, so it might be the the most compact and versatile solution, although I'm not sure it's going to sound better than the full size M^3 and Constantine.

  4. Nice trying to pull a deflector move. Sadly, it's a well-known liar's tactic.

I wasn't at the mini-meet at Matt's place and never said I was. I only said that I knew you were there, and since you were, you know Ray wasn't. You claimed to talk to Ray about "tech stuff" at a meet. Since the only meet I know you've been to was at Matt's I couldn't help but wonder which one you were talking about. That's the only question, not whether I hung out on Matt's sofa. There have only been two meets with Ray in Florida since you joined. Which one? Pick.

    LOL, Bad-da-bing, Bad-da-BOOM

  5. I'm curious, when and where did you guys listen to any of the mid-fi+ Rudistor amps? Which model?

I ask because I try to base my head-fi education on the experience of others, so I feel that it's important to know the reason why you guys bash his gear. I assume you've actually listened to it in order to form such a strong opinion.

As a preemptive note: I'm not in any way defending or pimping Rudi. I have no interest in his gear whatsoever and the only piece of his that I've auditioned was the RPX100.

I heard this balanced rig at a meet last year,w/ immtbiker's 600s .... sounded good enough for me to remember it...

  6. i'm not sure why ocidn is being attacked so hard for expecing Ray to answer a question. i've asked technical questions to both Mikhail and Craig, and i received answers rather quickly, so why shouldn't Ray answer a question?

because Ray's stuff is proprietary like "special sauce"....

  7. The pico might actually be a contender in this category, at least that's from what I heard from peter, whom i really trust. I'm gonna get a chance to hear it soon, so i'll post how that goes.

    You mean this Pico? ;D

    orig.jpg

I heard it at the NY meet, along with Nate and the others that were there, but I don't think it is in the same league as a Lavry or Benchmark or your CI.... it sounds really good, but it's very small.... there has to be a limit on the amount of electronics you can get in there... >:D

here it is next to my wrist watch....

synergy does play a role, but even in any particular rig the basic performance patterns of each dac are clearly going to show. a bright dac (dac-1) isn't going to become warm or smooth, neither is something like the lavry suddenly going to become the fastest, swiftest, most airy dac out there with cables/power or what not.

thought: going in one sonic direction is not necessarily a bad idea. With the GS-X/Benchmark/all silver cables i got one of the best soundstage, speed, impact rigs i have ever heard. it was out right amazing, and i didn't feel it was seriously lacking in midrange (as i would have previously thought it would).

That's very interesting.... bright, bright and bright.... you must have tried it with copper, or a hybrid? How did that affect the sound?
