  1. Well it's here and set up. Many thanks to foo_me who hauled up mine and his unboxed up (Craig needs to get the boxes redone since they promised him they would fit USPS size limits, but lied). Guy blew 2 tires on the road up and had to squeeze his sister and her belongings in a mini-cooper as well.... I owe him big time.

Well here are some point and clicks.. sorry I have no skills and a point and click.

It's the best headphone amplifier I've ever heard even unburnt in. Listening with the Spectral and balanced Audeze right now.. about to switch to K1K via the 4 pin. I'll post more impressions later and possibly a review which I've been meaning to do for the Audeze as well.

  2. How is the bass compared to the Qualia?

Way more in quantity.. more body but maybe less tight. The more body might just be the lack of tightness.. It isnt super untight just not as tight as say qualias/ad2k. I just have a better grasp of where a bass note covers, starts and end with the other phones.. but that might just be because there's less to survey.. if that makes any sense?

  3. i never opened them but am assuming the foam is on the drivers ( i think that is integral ) the foam that shines through the holes is what I was referring to ..dB

Oh crazy.. yeah i don't think that's in mine either.. Hrm but I never shined a light through it or looked closely through the little holes.

Well I have 0 problems with the bass quantity or impact at this point. It could be slightly tighter (Maybe) but quantity wise its probably the most out of all my phones though the AD2000s are probably pretty close probably less in quantity but more in tight.

    Extension is equal.

  4. Hrm which foam? The foam on the drivers? Or do you mean foam you can see through the little holes on the outer cubes? The foam on the drivers are on mine they definitely a new innovation on top of the prototype.. not sure about foam through little holes.

  5. no need to remind me. What worries me more is when you peek through hole where the cable goes, as there doesn't seem to be much if any strain relief, as the housing itself doesn't clamp down on the cable. I haven't opened them up to confirm, but I'm only going to open them up once if you know what I mean.

    :horsey:

Uh that's terrible... that sounds like a long term issue. Besides the cable going out can the drivers be damaged due to how heavy the cable is without any relief?

Sounds like my pair that is traveling might need to make a stop to nugget audio for a once over ;p

  6. Well then, looks like we're covered there :D

I'd happily show off anything else you like, though :)

Grin we'll see.. I am tempted to replace the feet on my second spectral and send that out... but feet are like 55 bucks each and I need 4 :( And am kinda broke right now.

  7. I've never liked the woo5. It's really not bad compared to most of the competition, but 6sn7 + 300b amps are so over done. I wasn't a fan with the cary 300 sei and while the woo5 is better to my ears... pretty much any other tube seems way nicer.

Now that's a little bit hypocritical since the BA uses 6sn7 as a driver tube as well, but damn it's a tier or two up to my ears.

Consider the ZDT as well.. it's also superior to the Woo. I take delivery of my BA tomorrow so I'll get to spend some quality time with it... unless the AD1 issue requires some more tinkering.. god I hope not.

Yeah regarding the underpowered thing.. I think the partial silver transformers were tuned to a ratio better suited for K1ks and I don't think they really will sound underpowered with them, but I am unsure. I think foo_me still didn't think it was at the level of his Zanden though I don't know if that's presentation/sound signature related or underpowered sounding related. I'll have my pair next to me waiting for the darn amp so I'll know if its a power issue.. if its not then its possibly a sound signature issue or the fact that I have no crossovers in my k1k issue.

  8. I think it's easier, healthier and more affordable controlling your snoring. Plus if it's got worse lately and you may be suffering from sleep apnea episodes.

Oh I most assuredly have sleep apnea. I am grossly overweight for my height (247~ at 5'7 5'8) but more over my dad exhibits the snore pattern of sleep apnea and he's very fit.

I need to go to a sleep clinic to get it diagnosed but... staying over night is such a hassle I've avoided it. I may look into it next month. Esp to deal with this roomate thing..

but snoring is just one of the main issues.. the walls are so thin we can hear each other talking on the phone at like normal speaking volume even when we arent right up against the wall. I can't imagine bringing a girl home or vice versa ;p The other party would be able to hear everything basically.

  9. So I am thinking about replacing my roomate, but the main reason that I haven't is because the volume of my snoring is turned up to 11. I've been told not only can it be heard through the wall but through the floor as well to downstairs and that's a hard thing to see if a potential roomate can handle without doing a trial run which is really f'ing awkward to arrange.

My snoring aside.. you can hear everything through the wall including talking normal volume on the phone.

So I want to sound proof it up. What's the best way to do it? I'd prefer to only do it on my side if possible since I'm not sure I want to invest money into making it cosmetically appealing especially if that takes away from the reversibility of it... still those are negotiable and priority #1 is effective sound proofing.

    Any suggestions?

  10. You are probably right.. it was a mixed experiment. I tried it with my better fitting pair and it worked out pretty much ideally... that pair was the one that ripped though but it wasnt from that.

I came downstairs one day and it was just ripped when it wasn't when I took them off after work the day before. Taking them off is slightly more involved than just kicking off shoes or sandals so I would have noticed if it was ripped prior.

Coincidentally I noticed last night my adidas sandals vanished.

Now I am starting to wonder if it might be roomate vengeance...

  11. You think this will be their first time hearing the results of the grass roots Team Ortho effort? I like it. Speaking of which...

While you're there, look 'em in the eye and ask "Are you guys crazy?" No, don't say that. But do try to get them to talk about what happened that made them decide to market an ortho 'phone. It's not like they could expect to make oodles of bucks anytime soon from such a product. The fact that there are two companies marketing new-from-the-ground-up designs just this model year is pretty freaky. It would be interesting to find out what got them started down this freaky road. Just a thought.

I think they did it on a whim in the process of figuring out their line arrays and then there seemed to be some interest. They are still in the process of gauging interest. If there's not enough I'm sure they will do what non-crazy people do.. give up. I don't really think it's going to be their main product by any means.. it's just relatively low start up cost compared to speakers/line arrays. They are working on mics too which also makes sense.

  12. Yeah generally the only gratification I get with regards to the light is the fact that there's a sweet light that is now on and now I know the thing was mastered with the pacific microsnics model 1 or 2 which regardless of hdcd are some of the best adc ever from my understanding.

HDCD itself is no more special than any other format hirez or redbook to my ears... even if there are supposed technical benefits.

The most important thing for me in your case is that likely if the light turns on then that means it's using the pmd200 filter (Possibly only the PMD200 filter) versus Esoterics.. its mostly a diagnostic thing.

I've never gotten it to turn on before but I also never really tried as it never occured to me until testing it prior to shipping it out that I could do it and JP had the remote at the time (necessary to tweak settings). In fact I didn't even know that it had an hdcd light if that's what it is. (It has a little hdcd marking or whatever on the display which I assume lights up). Lucky you will have both the remote and the manual(s) service and normal to figure out how to get that bugger on ;p

  13. Okay I think I'm ready to send my single ended pair out for a little journey. Keep it for a week or two each please. I think I'm willing to let it go to another 3-5 people besides the two listed depending on how much I know/trust them ;p

Usual rules. I'll pay to ship it to Dreadhead, but then each of you pay the postage to the next guy. Try to maintain the original packaging so yall can remain blameless of damage due to crappy packaging (It'll be all on me and my packing skillz etc). If you notice damage/wonkiness upon receiving it make sure to alert me and document it so we can pinpoint exactly what happened and hold the proper people responsible.

    Most likely a non-issue of course :)

That being said if you can't afford to replace it if the worst come to pass then don't ask to be considered :/ Sorry :(

    List:

    1. Dreadhead

    2. Deepak
