  1. I can understand having a unity gain setting for low-level listening, IEM's, etc. But why have a high gain setting that's only 2.5? I would have made it at least 5, so that the amp could drive K1000's.

RichterDi owns an Opera with high gain and he does indeed utilize it for his K1000s.I don't know if Jan Meier would do a high gain version for everyone but he did it for RichterDi on request.

  2. I'm pretty sure the SRM-252 is more detailed than the SRD-7 Mk2 I own as well,

My SRM-313 (from what I've heard similar to the SRM-252 but with a built-in power supply) isn't more detailed than my slightly modded SRD7Pro/CEC Amp 3300 and overall I prefer vastly the SRD/speaker amp combo.

May I ask what speaker amp you are utilizing?

  3. The Mk2's are highly sought after and can go for way more then 200$.

I've sniped a SRD 7SB Mk II this evening.

I've wanted a spare SRD for modding purposes (just in case I wreck one in a modding attempt), and here it is.

    Wasn't exactly cheap though.

    Indeed more than $200.

Feck, the SRD 7 Pro I've purchased less than a year ago did cost less than $100.

  4. So some German things are less expensive in the U.S. than in Germany? Just curious; any examples of what the difference is? :P

Yes, many german goods are less expensive in the US.Often the price difference is huge.

Ultrasone Edition 9 for instance (lowest prices I've seen):

    US: ~$1100

    Germany : ~$2100

  5. It seems any headphone that is distributed in the large, competitive and efficient US market has the lowest price there.

Believe it or not I do sometimes import german headphones (and other german goods) from the US. :o

  6. The SB's are more expensive then the AC unit's. A transformer is always more expensive then a AC cord and that is the only difference in the Mk2's. The old SRD-6's used a multiplier without a transformer so you are very dependent on the speaker input level to maintain the bias. I've never had any issues with the SB's but then again I don't listen to a lot of music with quiet passages.

Thanks for letting me learn something ....
  7. There was clearly something wrong with the unit or is was a very early SB as there is enough energy stored in the bias supply to keep the headphones going for at least an hour without any power coming in. The Mk2's used a pretty high ratio transformer coupled with a double zener input so the bias supply would always be fed even if the input voltage was pretty low.

    Maybe it was defective.

I did have so many of these units over the years and when I think about it the SB unit wasn't even a SRD 7.It was a SRD 6.Since then I had avoided the SB types, maybe for wrong reasons, but later I have read about loudness fluctuations in combination with SB units happening to other owners, too.

Do you know why Stax had decided to sell non-SB units? There must be a technical reason since the SB types are cheaper to produce.

  8. SB is in no way inferior to the AC biased designs

I've once had a SRD-7 SB and I guess they are similar in that regard to the Pro varieties.

When you listen to music that unlike modern overly compressed pop music does actually contain decent dynamic range you get audible loudness fluctuations with the SB types.

  9. Hey Staxenheads:

I have the SRD-7. What exactly is the pro-bias equivalent of this called, i.e. one that can be used with the Omega Deuce? The SRD-7 Pro?

I'm thinking about keeping my eyes open for one of these, thanks.

You are looking for the SRD7 Pro or SRD 7 MkII.The latter provides either "Pro" and the older six pin "Normal" bias jacks. There are also the socalled SB variants.SB means self biased and is inferior IMO.

You probably won't get the Stax Pro transformer boxes for cheap nowadays anymore.$200 is quite normal nowadays.

  10. That dumbass is over on the rock grotto forum, where he goes by "el Rickamundo".

I've just looked and in fact he is again posting there.

He was a mod there once and vanished a few months ago without notice.

Oh, and I do like either Rick and Mike regardless of oversized ego respectively odd behaviour under the influence.

  11. i don't know about that.

i've been looking around this place. a few interesting threads. but for every 10 pages of content, if one could call it that, there is maybe 3 pages of audio discussion and the rest is swearing or other remarks that people think are witty and amusing. it seems like a little club for those who hate and want to bash products by rsa, rudi, and woo (and who also were expelled from head-fi) but who love KG stuff. and if you listen to or like the former you are a moron and your opinions are meaningless, but if you like the latter, then you know the "truth" about audio. seems like bull to me. a bunch of guys who maybe took EE 101 and think they know everything.

A tourette syndrom doesn't qualify for a ban here, that's for sure.
  12. Nope. That's why I'm not worried. I mean, unless you are a jackass or a n00b a feedback thread is pretty useless. ;)

    I don't think so.

Me running into a long term member with thousands of posts and a mile long feedback thread without remembering having heard of him before is either a sign of Alzheimer or just different preferences in this hobby.
