  1. Sweet: cassettes!  That's awesome.  I had a cassette on just last weekend.  LOL.

I wandered out to the Seattle-based Silver Platters to see what I could come up with.  It was crazy.  Nobody was perusing their vast CD racks, but 20 of us were digging through the vinyl.  Small corner of the store, not really fun.  Left with a few titles in mind, but nothing in hand.

On the way out to dinner I heard Steve Miller's Fly Like an Eagle and remembered I had that on vinyl.  Checked it when I got home and realized I had the 1999 RTI 180gm pressing which showed up at a collector site for $75.

  2. Had some Shieldaig this evening with my father.  Read some decent reviews, some good, some bad.  Shieldaig is a bottler, not a distiller, so they apparently buy lots of scotch and sell it under their own label.  This was the 18 year Speyside.

It has a spicy start, with a slight woodsy flavor.  Quite smooth with a fruity finish.  Not sweet fruity, but some flavor I can't pin down.  I wasn't sure if I liked the finish or not, but it's smooth enough that I believe the aging value.  Next time around I'll add a few drops of water and see where it goes from there.

Not what I was expecting, but definitely interesting.

  3. I wimped out on my glasses.  I could have had bifocal but went single vision, then sneakily found frames that are narrow so I can look under them when I need to.  I find, however, that I do take these off to see more than I expected.  sigh.

  4. I haven't been a huge fan of Balvenie so far. I got a sampler pack of the 12/15/21.  The 12 was fine, the 21 was better and the 15 I liked the most of the three but maybe not enough to buy a whole bottle.  It isn't too hard to get samples of the Balvenie stuff and I would probably do that before buying a bottle.

I bought it on a recommendation, so I suppose I should have searched for the samples first.  Thanks for the tip!  Jury is still out on it.  It's good, I'm just not sure if the sherry finish is what I was expecting.

The Hibiki and Hakushu look interesting.  I'll have to hunt those down.

  5. Balvenie 12yr Double Wood.  Highland-style.  Mellow with a slightly spicy finish.  The Double Wood name comes from the process: part way through they move it from traditional oak casks to first-fill European Oak sherry casks.

  6. Hey, thanks a bunch, guys and gals!  Much appreciated!

For the record, today is birthday 50.  A little weird, since I really don't feel like I'm 50 just yet.  Although I occasionally groan when getting up from the floor.  Hm.

Al - to note - Lisa got me tickets to see Teatro Zinzanni here in Seattle for the evening.  I don't see that the show in in SFO any longer.  Hope you got a chance to see it while it was there.  Should be a raucous, crazy night!
