  1. There are so many different versions of the pre-remaster CDs. Some sound good (even the best CDs will not touch the very good/excellent vinyl because the CDs are taken from such late generation tapes) and others are dreadful. It's hard to say which it will be unless you listen to it. The crappy CDs were probably taken from pre EQ (where the phono stage RIAA curve should adjust the EQ) LP tapes, so you basically have no bass and tons of high frequencies.

Of those I have, Foxtrot and SEbtP are definitive step-up from the remasters. The V/C of The Lamb sounds a bit weird and Nursery Cryme I don't remember, it's been a while since I've listened to it. The only turd in the Gabriel-era V/C I have is Trespass, there's something weird with the mastering, but I also have the other weird release on MCA Records that sounds quite good.

  2. I've never heard Genesis on vinyl unfortunately, but you can find the albums in their original Virgin/Charisma CD pressing for pretty cheap on eBay or at used record stores. From what I understand, they were just transfers from vinyl and they sound much better than the '94 remasters and infinitely better than the recent box set.

  3. Iron Maiden - The Final Frontier

Very nice album and a real grower, I've been listening to it a lot in the past few days. 'When the wild wind blows' and 'Starblind' are up there with the best Maiden stuff IMO. Too bad they did a hack job once again with the production, Kevin Shirley and Steve Harris should not be allowed near the mixing boards as far as I'm concerned.

  4. The guy I went to for my JH13 molds was very experienced with musicians, IMO that's an important prerequisite. If the person had looked at me with a wtf face when I told I wanted molds for custom earphones, I would have gone elsewhere.

  5. No offense against (most) Arcade Fire fans, but you have to admit their stuff is hyped to an incredible point by journalists and bloggers. You feel they're the reincarnation of Beethoven when you read reviews of their albums, while in reality what they do is quite basic rock.

  6. Iron Maiden - The Final Frontier

Wow, Iron Maiden gone experimental (by their standards, at least), it's incredible that they call pull stuff like this after 30 years playing together! On first listen, I prefer this album to 'A Matter Of Life A Death' and 'Dance Of Death', and it might fall just a notch behind 'Brave New World' as my favorite album since Bruce coming back. The sound quality of the MP3 leak sucks unfortunately, hopefully the CD will sound way better than this.

  7. I never quite understood the definition of neutral headphones, but to me the HD650 sound much more natural and closer to what I hear in live music. What I mean by that is the sound doesn't sound forced, it just flows without presenting too much flaws, while on the other hand I felt the D5000 were trying to shove boomy bass into my ears and sucked the mids out of the music and it didn't sound anything close to live music to me.

  8. Outstanding. Definitely one of my favorites from them. I have two or three copies of it...one on CD and two on vinyl, including an original Deram pressing. Fun stuff.

I love Ice, truly classic Camel stuff. Btw, Andy Latimer has apparently recovered from his illness and he's featured on David Minasian's upcoming album. I listened to a few samples on his MySpace page and it sounds very promising.

  9. As of today I'm blissfully apple free.

I think I'm going to follow your path when my 2007 MacBook dies (I'll keep my iPod Touch though). I'm not a fan of how Apple has been acting with its customers lately and also how they've pretty much stopped improving user functionality on OS X.
