  1. All you super tech types humble me. Heck, I can barely solder two wires together much less build an amp or other piece of gear! My "project" is taking my son's old bedroom and making it a private space for me to sit down and listen in peace. Got it painted and all my gear in place. Still need a good LCD and stand and need to replace the carpet with hardwood. Then it's off to rework the home theater.

  2. Annoying to be sure. I picked up an adapter from ebay to use with mine. Can't recall the guys handle at the moment but a search should provide some results. If you can't find one, drop me a PM here and I'll see if I can go back through my records and find it. It's a cheap little thing, and I wasn't particularly thrilled with the sonics from my phone so I never use it. Still, in a pinch, I felt like having something so I picked up the adapter. Still, it'a pain to be forced to carry yet another piece of hardware when you travel. Sorry about the surprise from Apple, but as other pointed out, it's not much of a secret.

  3. Had them for 6 months or so. Way too bright for my tastes. Found them to be among the most comfortable cans to wear but just too fatiguing for extended listening. Of course, I had a SS amp at the time. Sometimes I wonder how I'd feel about them with a good tube amp? Given their price point of late, I doubt I'll get that chance.

  4. Yeah, I kind of liked the Euro line(wife didn't) and their other stuff...well....left me a bit cold. Just looked cheap. I really wanted the Atlantis AV 3 shelf rack which was really intended for a TV and equipment. Just don't care for these tall, vertical racks and preferred having things a bit lower to the ground. The AV rack with black frame and honey shelves would have fit the colors of the room very nicely. Rosewood on black was my second choice. All a moot point now I guess.

Anyway, there are a few units from the likes of Bello, Lovan, Advantage and Alphason that might work out. Just enough wood and glass to look more furniture like which would make the missus happy.

  5. I've got myself a dedicated listening room and had wanted a new rack. The Atlantis line seemed to please the wife from a "furniture" standpoint and it really did look pretty nice compared to most. Not an outrageous price either. Now most sites don't list the Atlantis line anymore and the few who do indicate that the Reference line has been discontinued. Did they go belly up or is a new product line coming which replaces the Reference series? Anyone know? Either way I'm back to square one in the search and nothing really appeals to me. :(

  6. x2

and the denons did go over pretty well, got me interested in a pair.

I was a bit hesitant about the Denons, but took a chance and bought a pair(5000s). I'm quite pleased with them out of my Supra so far. Not bad out of my ZVM and laptop either.

  7. I have experience with a direct comparison between the SB3/Stello DA200 MKII and an SACDmodded 555ES. Sonically, if I could have only one, I'd go with the Sony. The Sony had a bit more of everything than the Stello. It also sounded more "analog" to my ear than the Stello. Still, the SB3/Stello was very nice and very convenient. Having my entire collection available at the whim of my remote was great. The balanced question is rendered moot due to the fact that Matt is offering balanced outs as part of his offerings on the 555ES IIRC so it really comes down to a slight but noticable sonice superiority of the modded 555ES over the convenience of the SB3/dac combo. Only you can make that choice I guess.

Of course, there's a third option......get the SB3 and an Opus 21 which has that sweet coax input. You have CDs AND FLAC files at your fingertips......and yes, that's another pretty good jump in price but the performance boost is worth it IMO. >:D

  8. By "project", I'm assuming it can be something other than electronic/DIY builds?

Anyway, I just secured a room in the house for my own personal private space. Spent the past 4 days sanding/painting/steaming with the intent of making it a listening room. One more coat of paint on the trim and I'll be ready to make the move. Biggest problem is furnishing it.....specifically, a rack and some sort of storage case for all the CD's I own. I'll leave the seating to the wife....as long as it passes my fanny test, I'll be pretty happy with the esthetics.

  9. That's cheapskate ingenuity at its best.

Get some pipe, screw it to a board, and then put pipe insulation on it. ;D

Works for me. Might not be the prettiest, but it certainly gets the job done. I might "splurge" and get one of those aluminum Woo jobs. ;)

  10. It was a retermination....the cable is a four wire job straight to the plug. So i cut off the plug about 4 inchs back and reterminated it with a 4-pin xlr. I might do a full recable later, but it's always a pain....I wish headphone manufactureres could get together and decide on one standard for these things.

Well I'm still bringing them in but balanced they sound great.

Thanks for that information. I'll probably do a reterm as well. Less risk and while the stock cable isn't so flexible, I can deal with it. Beats taking the risk of digging into the cans themselves. If something can go wrong, it certainly will with my pair.

Would you say the D5000 responds to balancing as well as the 650 or as much as the 701?

  11. Pretty darn good. There is still a little headstage funkiness going on...it's hard to describe. It's not a three blob affect, but it kinda is too. I need more time with them to form any serious impressions

So you have the D5000 balanced! Finally, someone who's heard that. Not to sidetrack from your new amp, but I'd be very interested in hearing your thoughts on the D5000 balanced. Did you do the job yourself? Was it a retermination or a full recable? I'm assuming you feel like it was worth the time and expense despite the "headstage funkiness"??

  12. I know some may take offense at what I'm about to post and others will simply ignore me, but it's something I must say/post.

To every poster here who's using/abusing drugs/alcohol....I beg you....please get help before it's too late. If you haven't started but are considering taking that step....run as hard and as fast as you can in the other direction. You have no idea what lies ahead if you choose this path....no idea at all.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your families.:(

  13. If this "source" is legit, I pray they put this a-hole under the damn jail. >:( Better yet...put him in the pit with several of his own dogs and let justice be served. I have absolutely no sympathy for sick, pathetic individuals who abuse animals like this. Again, if it's true. According to this article, the source is a good one and legit. Kicking him out of the league simply isn't enough. He needs to do time and a lot of it. JMO

  14. When a guy from Zurich returned a now discontinued amp, which sounded rather bad (I can see why it's discontinued) Rudi refused give him the refund in cash but gave him Rudistor vouchers instead. Useless obviously because he never wanted to buy another Rudistor amp again. Rudi was also very difficult to deal with as he told me. But since he was a nice guy, he waited for half a year or more, and I think eventually got his money back after a lot more bitching. Never went public on headfi although he should have.

Thanks for the info. Looking like a beta22 is in my future.....I think.

  15. I'm told it's been that way for some time now, and I wasn't exactly surprised given how he's been a Rudistor shill for ages.

Good grief...I posted in that thread! How in hades did I forget about it?!?!? Getting old really STINKS. :(

Head-fi thread in the DIY forum, in the KG's thread about his 6AR8 hybrid amp. From which we learn that Rudistor doesn't understand too much about amp design, and that's putting it a little kindly.

Found it! Since I'm a piss poor DIY'er and have only so-so soldering skills, I don't frequent that board much.....er...at all, so it's clear why I missed it. Yeah, that's it....it's not that I'm approaching AARP age and my original equipment is failing me. I refuse to believe that.

  16. He's been Rudistor's distributor for a while now.

I don't get to read up on things as much as I did. Really, I get to log in and periodically check the headlines and a few posts. Looks like I'm always on, but the reality is my time actually reading the websites is very small. Guess I'm behind and need to catch up. Really had no idea he was in that position now.

Kevin Gilmore has posted some interesting comments on rudidistor amps. And they arn't what I would call good comments. :P

    Biggie.

Did a search but didn't see anything from KG on this. Likely overlooked the comments. What thread were they in and I'll see if I can find it. Thanks for the tip. Should make for some enlightened reading.

  17. I'm looking for a balanced SS amp for a second rig and have turned my attention to this line. I've not paid much attention to Rudi's offerings in the past but have been peeking at his website of late. Any users(past or present) of his gear care to give me some thoughts/impressions? Build quality looks good on the surface, but I've been down that road before. It's nice to have the cosmetic appeal, but I'm really concerned about the inner workings and performance. Appreciate any feedback.

  18. well I'm working on some pics of myself running naked through a wild, green field; the long, soft blades of wind-hewn grass caressing my thighs and buttocks...

...but on this website we just talk about audio, right? :D

You paint such a picture! I'm sure it will be more than worth the wait! ;)
