It occurs to me that the Cary 300sei is selling mostly under 2K on A'gon. which gives me the impression that maybe i can start thinking about trading in my ZD.... anyone have any idea about how these compare?

I kinda doubt the Cary would be any better than your ZD. Of course the Cary can also drive speakers so that might make it a more valuable piece to you depending on your situation.

Keep in mind the price on the 300SEI will depend on manuf. date, tubes included, remote, subwoofer out, etc. And tube rolling the amp isn't going to be cheap.
