Would you say it was the source (DAC1 has a reputation of being bright while the G08 has a reputation of being warm and smooth), or would you say it's the amp?

It's the amp. I bet the Supra would sound even better out of the G08.

Just to throw something out there. Has anyone heard the 580/600/650 on a solid state amplifier that sounds half-way decent? I am about at the point where I'd almost say uncategorically that these 'phones need tubes.

I loved the 580 on the Beta22! I liked it better than I did from your Single Power! I didn't try the 650's from both though.

I agree that the 580/600 are to different from the 650 to make a real comparison. I also agree that the system synergy will matter greatly as to which you may prefer.

I also prefer the 580 to the 600, only because the 600 paint job makes me want to hurl.

Even better would be to spend an another $20-30 and get a used HD650. The 650 with stock cable whips the 600 with any cable, IMO. My complaints on the 600 are grain, recessed mids, the low-end, and the high-end. The differences between 580 and 600 are very small, by comparison.

Just got an offer of 180 + shipping for 5 year old 600's rated 8/10 on audiogon. Sounds like a good deal to me. Am I wrong?

EDIT: I could swear you can get a 650 for not that much more, I knw absorbine has his on sale for 225 i think. I would probably go that route.
