  1. "Broadchurch" finale - I came around to liking this show a lot more after I stopped expecting it to be another "Luther" or "The Fall". Rather than being focused on a serial killer, it unfolds more like a novel, slowly peeling back the layers of a (supposedly) sleepy coastal town. The ending scene is very moving.

"Sleepy Hollow" - my favorite new show of the season so far. Better than Whedon's "MAOS", imo.

  2. So, should we also put a large PC battery backup on the sump pump, like the alarm?  It's never rained hard enough to make the sump pump trip the breaker, but I'd worry about burning up the motor if it's run hard enough to trip the breaker and we give it backup power.  But backup power would be good if there is a general power outage during a storm.

Hmmmm... not sure what about the main pump would have tripped the breaker other than it was not up to the task at hand. You may need a more powerful main pump. Btw, the "battery backup" only powers a secondary, less powerful pump. Your main pump cannot be sustained for any length of time on battery, so when the mains power goes, your primary pump stops working regardless. For that, you need a generator.

Glad the insurance company came through though.

  3. Tonight he is full of piss and vinegar. Took him to the vet. Narrowed it down to either an cardiac event or a neurological episode. Ruled out epilepsy and Lyme disease. So we don't know. Ordered blood work which I don't expect to show anything.

One of my mom's beagles began to suffer frequent seizures a few years back. Since that time, he's been on a daily regimen of Phenobarbital. This has curbed his seizures down to one or two per year since, with no negative side effects other than frequent urination. Other than that, he is a happy "puppy" (actually ~8 or 9 y/o rescue).

Hopefully Quest has a full recovery. Stay positive Al.

  4. You should definitely speak with your homeowners insurance people as rain coming in a window is different from flooding, in my experience.  You might be able to make a semantic argument with them about the damage in the basement.  I'd at least give it a try and not assume that you're screwed just yet.  This is based on my experience with the massive hail storm that we had in NH 7 years ago.

    ^This.

If you know a good, trustworthy insurance adjuster to fight on your behalf with your insurance company, it may mean the difference between getting paid and not.

  5. Thanks for the birthday wishes folks - much, much appreciated.

My wife & I just got back to CT after a long weekend up in Mattapoisett, MA visiting my brother & his family (wife & four children). The "big 'five-oh'" hit me harder psychologically than I had anticipated. However, being around family & friends, especially the youthful energies of my nieces & nephew made for a wonderful couple of days.

Here's to a productive & positive year ahead. It's been a while since I've met up with my fellow headphiles in person. Perhaps I can rectify that this year as well.

    Cheers! :dan:

  6. Just got around to watching all ( ;) ) of  Broadchurch. It's now on BBC America and very much worth watching, if not exactly uplifting.

Episode 4 just aired last week on this side of the pond. I was intrigued with the first ep, but am bored now. "The Fall" is so much better.

Can't wait for "Luther" (season 3) to run this week!

  7. Finished season 1 of "The Fall" - like

Gillian Anderson looks amazing playing British with a very consistent accent, in this gritty, serial-killer drama based in Belfast. It's well-done, with interesting parallels between the killer's acts & the rest the cast's regular lives juxtaposed expertly for the viewer, underscoring the theme of compartmentalizing different aspects of one's life. All five eps are available on Netflix.
