  1. The other day I was at work, browsing room treatment shit, and I ran across this site:

    RealTraps - Home

And I fucking see my ex-girlfriend's picture there. Apparantly I dated the owner's daughter. He hated me ;D

    (She's on the left)

She is cute, but my god I must be getting old, because she looks 15 to me.

The baby pic creeps me out Duggeh!

  2. I like them, and if you had enough of them mounted on a wall they'd deaden a room quite effectively too.

don't worry, i would have dissed you if your answer to my question had been "fluttery birds and innocent happiness."

Shit! I guess I won't post my sculpture now. Mine was "fluttery happiness and innocent birds" but still...

  3. Thanks for the analysis wualta. I think I just need to live with them in modded form a bit longer, or try a different amp.

Stock I felt it does have the right amount, but a bit undetailed and "dynamic"-ish.

Faust do you think you'll make the NY meet? I'll know for sure this afternoon.

    I'll bring the HP-1 if I do.

If you get the chance to try it on...

    PPA V1 or V2

    M

  4. In stock form does it really have any form of decent trebles?

Im v.suprised to hear it was balanced in stock form (I am yet to even hear my YH-1 stock yet btw).

Does anyone else agree with this btw? It didnt seem to me Steve was saying it was balanced in stock form, but I could be mistaken.

I dont think I have heard a single ortho that had a balanced spectrum in stock form (Save the Aiwas stock scheme, but then there were still way too many resonances, it also turns out the Wharfedales stock scheme is a bit sucky).

If you are happy in stock form even with resonances, but find the treble slightly lacking. Why not keep it stock form and try a reflex dot or two?

If ya find it fine completely in stock form even in comparison to a O2....well I cant wait till I get mine in my hands ;)

I happen to think the HP-1 and YH-1 are the best Yamahas in stock form except for the YH-1000. To me the YH-100 absolutely needs modding, but has more to gain from modding than all the other Yamaha drivers.

That said I still prefer a modded HP-1/YH-1 to stock.

    I'll contribute to the cause!

Thanks Jay, I knew we could count on you for a sperm donation. :P

  5. Well said. I don't think the point is to try to replicate the stat sound, which we know is an effort in futility.

The point is to get some of those characteristics plus some very musical, lush, full sound with the addition of strong bass extension at a fraction of the price of the big stats.

To my mind the Ortho sound is a great meld of some of the stat and dynamic signatures. What it does well, it does very well, and at a price that's still a relative bargain.

  6. I heard some pretty credible intel about a year ago and at that time Sennheiser was pretty concerned about the economy and demand for high end headphones. I can't imagine they feel better about that situation now.

Then again there's the stand they requested. Who knows?

  7. "Near-Field Speaker: a compact studio monitor designed for listening at close distances, typically between three and five feet. When sitting at this near-field distance, the listener hears a greater proportion of direct sound from the monitors (compared to the reflected sound bouncing around the room) so, in theory, the effects of poor room acoustics are greatly reduced."

Since nearfield listening basically derives from the studio environment, I'd call this definition fairly accurate. But generally it also involves desktop placement.

  8. I agree that seal is key. The velour Beyer pads were terrible. I just wasn't sure how dense the Grado foam would be or how it would seal. I wonder if a rubber coating on the face of the foam pads would be worthwhile?

I guess it would just be easier to try a known quantity and go with pleather pads.

The Goldring frame fit me very well, but I have a small head. Good thing too, because the NADs just fit at the end of their adjustment. They must have been designed for toddlers?

Only one problem with that... I have no dynamic amps left. :'(

    No more Beta22?

  9. Dude, that is by no means complicated. I'm talking multiple variable-width, frequency-selectable ranges that only a computer could control, no set of knobs would be sufficient (that I'm aware of).

I mean, yeah, it's Grado's most comfortable headphone, but...just not worth the effort.

Yeah point taken, but I had to post it because it is after all a Cello, and Mark Levinson was my hero. I'm sure even Mark could not make the GS1000 sound like a flagship product.

    Same as my avatar:

I know nothing of Lain, or anime for that matter, but that is cool Fitz. It looks like there are way too many strings on her guitar however. Maybe its shadows.

  10. So I just reread this entire thread (a bit easier to do than the HF thread), and a few things I need to log down for posterity are...

    1) Marc is a fickle bastard, and he's always moving on to new things. So if he sells the T50 V1 without giving me first dibs, I'm sending -= Germania =- to wreck his marriage.

    2) I need to get off my ass and make an SFI woody. How would a Grado based headband mechanism and custom woody housing sound with the SFIs and the giant foam GS1000 pads? I have no idea how the foam pads would do with planars, but I'd like to try.

    3) My penis is very respectable! In fact it's been stored away for 15 years now just to gain back said respectability.

  11. I usually buy my pads from Japanese retailers through deputy services so I'd drop Craig at KuboTen a line and see how much a set would cost. The Mk1 pads are around 5800-6000Yen but the new pads are more expensive despite being only partially made out of leather.

I'll check into it. You know it would be fun to ship you the Donut MkII and have you try them. Then you could also compare the L3000 pad to the OII pad before I drop $140.00 on a set.

The MkII uses the YH-100 driver, and is now damped better IMO than the first gen. Donut. They're prettier too. :P

That's what I thought too. That guy from Poland is always saying that his set had cotton pads which makes less then no sense given the planar nature of the drivers.

Tomek? I've seen pics, and they do indeed seem to have some type of fabric pads. I assure you they are in no way original equipment, and I'm quite certain he'd get a big jump in SQ if he'd replace them with a suitable pleather/leather donor. He may be under the idea that they are stock pads, but as an original YH-1000 former owner I'm in the know. ;)

  12. The SR-007 and SR-Ω are the only headphones I can wear for hours at a time without any discomfort. The older model has got the edge though as the pads are much bigger (the whole headphone is quite a bit bigger) so they are less claustrophobic.

Where can I purchase a set of the new Black pads for the 007 MkII?

Btw. Do you remember what material was on the earpads when you bought them? There has been this debate on HF whether they were pleather or not.

Definitely pleather, just like the YH-100. Hardly anyone was doing leather back then.

When I got my Chocolate set it came with Beyer leather pads and frankly sucked. The SR-007 pads brought much needed focus to the table along with a general upgrade in all areas.

Yeah the Beyer pads left a lot to be desired. The L3000 get your ear closer to the driver, and are almost a cross between circumaural and supra-aural.
