Happy Birthday!

Blaming it all on the diaphragm is the same as saying a Dac upgrade will transform a CDP...
People have been blaming things on the diaphragm for decades...

The Feelies are getting back together and playing their first gig together in 15 years when they open for Sonic Youth in Battery Park (which will be my new "backyard") on July 4th.

I am very, very happy about this. Few at the other site seem to care. At least Voltron will find this interesting.

It's not bad but you could do better such as the SRM-1 Mk2.
What's a good price for that amp?
-
...and it did sound pretty good off the McAlister amp (much more punchy and focused.
I heard a McAlister driving some Stax phones at the NYC Meet. I liked the McAlister a lot.

Sorry to have been less than clear. This is not my $, I'm trying to spec out something for my dad. It is for a 5.1 HT system, so 6 speakers. I figure 3k gets something pretty good, but I am sure he'd be happy to spend less.

Does anyone have experience with Aperion?

For a cool fifty bucks I will install flat pads on any and all Grados. You supply the pads, I merely take care of the intricate assembly process.

Thanks for the advice (here as well as earlier).

It's the best bang for the buck option of the current lineup and a damn good headphone. Don't skimp on the amp though as they are held back by the current 313/323.
Is the 323 really that bad?

Happy Birthday(s)!

Sorry, I mean 5.1 (maybe expand to 7.1 later). Not sure if floorstanders are the way to go or smaller on stands? I just don't want a box o' crap surround setup.

KEF
What is your budget? Bookshelves? Floorstanders?
Floorstanders, most likely. Budget around $3k.
-
I'm looking for some decent surrounds and don't want to break the bank. I've read good things about KEF and PSB as overperformers. Any others?
-
I am seriously considering the 303,

I'm having nate ship my amp down, and I'm shipping my denon down in advance. I don't know of any pelicans that are good enough for my needs...
Are the Pelican cases no good?

They really lend a much warmer, smoother sound. Definitely sacrifices a little of the detail up top, too, but I'm generally ok with that--less fatiguing. They don't rock as hard, but they're much more comfortable and easier to use for long listening sessions. I still find congestion to be a problem with the HF-1, and the flats make that a bit more pronounced. Overall, though, the flats are a big improvement to my ears.
I guess that wasn't all I had to say about that.
-
I think I like my HF-1 much better with flats.
That's all I have to say about that.

Two bottles of Kistler 2005 Chardonay.
Ah, very nice. Reminds me that I need to raid my father's wine cellar!
-
Flat pads for my HF-1.

It's going to be primarily home theater/hi-def. It's ok if standard def is sub-par as there are other TVs in the house.
EDIT: hi-def viewing definitely will include sports/action.

He'd probably prefer plasma, but is open to all.

Can anyone comment on the RS-1 with flats?
