http://gilmore.chem.northwestern.edu/circlotronhvps.jpg !!! no ground plane on that one, everything floats It fits in the 5U pesante amplifier chassis with room to spare. 3 x power transformers mounted to the back panel hv power supply mounts vertically, one on each side kgsshv power supply mounts vertically on the bottom (not a lot of heat because less current draw for the gain stages) either gain stage board, 1 each side mounting vertically and output stage board, 1 each side mounting vertically of possibly gain and output stage on the same board. (going to be close)

http://gilmore.chem.northwestern.edu/circlotronps.pdf birgir seems afraid. birgir is NEVER afraid. uses the 550V caps which are $32 each, and you need 10 plus 10 of the 500V versions

this will definitely fit in the case i did for the krell, but might fit in the smaller case.

there are 4 different designs now for the ksa5. the first power supply is the double zener thing. the second one is the alternate ksa5 power supply which is fully regulated. the third one is a shrunk version of the second one. the 4th one is the goldenreference board. the goldenreference is a different although similar design. about a factor of 100 less noise. my version of the Chinese thing has an extra current source in the front end, more current delivery due to darlington output, and way better and more accurate reference. and current sources that are very stable (none of that e series crap) to change for higher voltages, you change the lower feedback resistors and the power transformer. R7 and R10 http://gilmore.chem.northwestern.edu/goldenreference.pdf and I know the protection diodes are missing from the schematic. 2000 labels fixed in the zip file going to be way more stable than sigma22 and bunches less noise. its good for 500ma, maybe more. will have to test. so for dynahi, you need 2 otherwise you need one, and it works at any voltage 15,20,22,24,30 if you really want it to do 12v then you have to change the reference to 5v and technically you might want to adjust the zener D4,D6 to be roughly half of the desired output voltage. as shown its 20v for the ssdynalo i could do an off board version with flying output transistors, then on big heatsinks, as much power as the transformer can supply

i would open up the top and take a look in complete darkness and see if something is arcing to somewhere or you hear a physical noise in the amp
-
yep, that is where I bought mine, no wonder I could not find the invoice

finally a bom for the current boards http://gilmore.chem.northwestern.edu/ssdynalobal.xlsx

and now for something completely different part 3

I have never tried it. not available in plastic insulated tab, so you would have to make sure the insulation is right. at least its low voltage -

it was a greenlee, I had to order it from Newark and it came from Germany. it was about $200. birgir has one too, (and he posted pictures of the one he broke) so he can dig up the part number easier.
-
that is too small. 40 inch seems about right. the Phillips sure is close. would like an oled, but that is probably not going to happen in smaller sizes.

I have D punches and the IEC punch. yep they deform the metal but only on one side, so you make sure the other side is the outside. wrapping the die in some electrical tape along the surface helps making no marks.

so there were problems with the golden reference board, plus I added another stage to bring the noise down to 1.2 nanovolts peak to peak. (the 120hz is now at the rest of the noise....) PLEASE CHECK THIS! before I make boards that I have to throw out. http://gilmore.chem.northwestern.edu/goldenreference.pdf http://gilmore.chem.northwestern.edu/goldenreferenceboard.pdf http://gilmore.chem.northwestern.edu/goldenreference.jpg The 47uf caps are tantalum but the lead spacing is right

don't know yet. with the he1000 coming out, all this power is unnecessary and the ssdynalo works great. the no feedback part is sweet however. -

version 8 are the boards i am getting next week. no reason to update that. version 9 has a bit more heatsink on the outputs, otherwise identical. will do the dynahi soon
-
latest posted kgdynalobal5,kgdynalobal7,ksa5pssmall,goldenreference have ground planes on both sides. the first 2 were updated today. kgsshvpssic also has ground planes on both sides. 2 of birgir's latest boards have the same thing. all the above now have teadrops making the holes more reliable. grass does not grow under the feet of the stax mafia as you get older you need a bigger monitor. so getting a uhd display that is 28 inches from my current 32 inches is clearly the wrong direction. same thing with horsepower

really think that HIfi Nutter really needs to go and buy a liquid lightning and go over to changstar
-
if helps to have a bigass monitor. (32 inch, 2.5k) but its no longer enough, i need a 4k monitor thats about 40 inches for my desk. 60hz and the video card that goes with it. any suggestions?

yep i fixed it. one of the caps was not working because the ground was not hooked up. highly unlikely that anyone would know, but easy to fix. everyone with those boards should add the jumper. how I found it was I was working on adding more area to the heatsink on the surface mount board and saw that the pin was not connected. what I could do now is add some ground plane on the back of that board like I have done for the others. lower impedance ground means even less noise

Megatron Electrostatic Headphone Amplifier
kevin gilmore replied to kevin gilmore's topic in Do It Yourself
birgir bought 100 feet of fancy high voltage wire. he wanted to buy 300 feet, but that was way over the maximum size and weight limit for shipping. -
the reason why those power outlets are done that way is for europe and 220-240v where both lines may be hot WRT ground.

Megatron Electrostatic Headphone Amplifier

found this one yesterday, the 4 cathode caps for the outputs... same deal with the power supply, they could possibly short to ground, so either lift the caps a bit, or remove, put some kapton on the board and put the caps back. although no one has had this problem yet. updated board file has this fixed. -
the original and the boards i'm getting from birgir soon have one land missing from the 4.7uf cap to the right of the input connector. Jumper the ground line to the electrolytic next to it. board files updated. after i verify the surface mount boards work, i will have 2 sets of extra boards if people want them, also one set of boards with the mpsw parts.

as long as the heatsink is big enough, that should be fine, and put the power supply on the other heatsink. its still going to be a fairly big box
