  1. Given that economists have a less than 50% accuracy rate on predicting which way oil prices are headed, and that most of them still believe oil's headed back down to $65 a barrel once OPEC/Russia/Canada/Mexico/insert country ramps up production, I'd say yes. Or rather, my information sources, that being Matthew R. Simmons, Kenneth Deffeyes, and the guys at theoildrum.com are a hell of a lot smarter than the pie in the sky economists & traders.

Given that oil production has stagnated since the peak in 2005, and that stockpiles & inventories in the US have dropped by nearly 20% in the last year alone, it's a sure bet that prices are headed up, not down. In fact, in inflation adjusted dollars, we are now just a few dozen cents below the all-time high set in 1979 during Iranian hostage crisis.

The inflation adjustments for the USD make this so, but thats for peopel who spend in USD. For us in the UK, $100 is worth about ?0.37 at the minute. So our costs are lower (correct me if I'm wrong).

Of course, we are hovering at around the ?1 per LITRE mark for petrol atm. So even if the exchange rate is doing anything to help us against the barrel cost, its all for nothing against Big Gordies taxes.

  2. I think the rule applies to the Head-fi page on facebook as well. I was on there when head-fi was down and put in a post that I'd been surviving on visiting other sites, I named head-case and rockgrotto as the sites. Checking back later I noticed that my post had vanished :doghuh:

p.s. Head-case is now my favourite audiophile website :) it seems much more relaxed and less prone to overhype than head-fi ever was :prettyprincess:

I've never bothered joining the OFFICIAL Head-Fi facebook page. I've been a member on the original one for ages though. Of course, for me Facebook is what it was when it was still a pretty closed academic networking system. I've done my very best to battle its MySpace transition.

  3. The various changes and such below are of little significance to the greater joy of my audio hobby compared with:

    March/April 07: Dumped Mission M33. Bough Quad 21L.

Aside from that, put in a Pass Labs Aleph M power amp, Squeezebox 3, Audio Technica 440MLa, Pro-Ject Speedbox II.

The Aleph love the Quads and makes the AMT sound very lovely. Squeezebox is a great bit of kit.

Said goodbye to the aforementioned Missions, two sets of Jecklin Float Electrostatics, an HD280 Pro (awful awful headphones), a PX100, and a CX300 (awful awful awful awful earphones).

I also managed to lose my B&O A8, which I really liked, had great times with the TakeT H2 and enjoyed the UK meet.

Biggest lessons of 2007. Speakers are the win, amps DO matter, a lot, the K1000 is brilliant and I want one and vinyl is ftw.

  4. The Rock Grotto certainly does not get easily linked to on head-fi. I've had links to it I've posted deleted on several occasions. But then the trench between Jude and Mike is a little more craggy and sharp than what you get with forum competition.

  5. I agree entirely with the product issues being beyond the pale in such an expensive product, no matter how big a company is, it should get things right for the sort of monies involved here.

I have no link to the company beyond the fact that Mr Takei has agreed to let me review his products to the best of my ability. I also try to be 100% honest. And that's why I'll be saying that the use of the H2 drivers in the WHD configuration is basically a waste of time when I write up the review.

  6. I've been listening a lot to the second set of drivers I've been sent for comparison and theres not been any issues of crackle at all. I've also never had the noise re-appear in the first set of drivers after the intial listening period I had with them (which I still think was a grattle issue). It is dissapointing though that other people have had these problems. The beta testing comment is an unfair sword. The company is never going to reach the market size of Grado or Stax nevermind AKG or Sennheiser, even if TakeT comes up with a cheaper sheet film offering so the product, I suppose like a Morgan car is always going to be boutique.

I don't know how many have been sold since the Head-Fi buy offer, but I would be interested to know of those sold how many have had any of these issues. The headphone has already been through one major and one (from what I am hearing here) one very minor revision. While there are many things that can (coudl) be done to improve things at the performance end from a design perspective still, I don't think that many of them would be cost effective for the company. (wooden housings, Stax type cabling, complicated headband mechanism (and a complicated one would be needed because I'm still reserving judgement on these thick pads)).

Not to try and brush aside these issues there have been, because frankly, they are important for a company in this stage of market acquisition (if they are getting things wrong they should certainly be getting them right at the service end because the inconvenience is not good) to come over as enthusiastic and able and profuse in its desire to satisfy. The most paramount issue, beyond such concerns as these, from a performance perspective, is the availability of an amplification solution which does away with the need for the TR-2 though.

Im sorry if any of that didn't mesh, i've had an awful lot to drink tonight.

  7. I'm using a Halfer P125 60WPC solid state amp.

    ...

The honeymoon with the TakeTs officially ended an hour ago. What started as a crackle in the right side has progressively worsened to distortion, and now it doesn't put out any sound at all. I wiggled the cable in the right earcup, and the sound would correct for a minute, but as soon as I moved, it faded again. Now it won't come back with any movement. Given the voltage that the TR2 puts out, I opted not to mess with the H2s any further.

I am not happy. I now have to contact Mr. Takei and see about getting the H2s repaired. Which means sending them back to Japan, and being without them for a period of time measured in months. 0_o

This is not a good thing. I've had the cans for less than two months, totaling a few dozen hours at most. I've never dropped them, and stored them in the box they came in when I wasn't using them. Duggeh mentioned the cabling was the weak link the H2s ...he didn't know how right he was. :o

Really really bad luck there old stick, let us know how you get on with the repair. :(

  8. I'm sitting ~6ft away, and actually am using a significant amount of toe-in. I'll try firing the speakers more forward and see how that works, thanks for the tip. :)

I sit about 7 feet away, chair and speakers as close as convenient to an equal triangle.

When the quads are toed right in like monitors they are certainly too bright. I just kept inching them outwards until I went "that sounds good" and left it.

  9. A little rolled off in the high end might be good for application in a smaller listening room like mine. Sometimes the Quads can be a little bright, and I feel that if I could put some more distance between them and myself this would not be the case.

How much toe-in do you use and how far are you sitting? I found my 21L a little too bright and with worse imaging when they were toed in too far.

  10. I'd rather have 3 feet snaked on the floor than have to move my chair 3 inches. Measure the distance between your amp and your listening positions, and then add more to allow for slack and play. Does having a few more feet of cable really make that much difference sonically compared to not having it ergonomically?

I'd want more than 6 feet personally. 8 or 10 is good. Odd given that my speaker cable runs are only 4.

  11. Mr Takei is sending me some bits and pieces, including the new pads design and the WHD adapter. I'm looking forward to seeing how the H2 drivers work in that capacity as a speaker enhancement.

Good to hear you're enjoying the H2 more with your shiny new amps!
