  1. Going with those comparisons I've read they don't stand a chance. They are after all simple mods while the APL is a complete rebuild.

Why on earth not? You get much better service and better bang for your buck. The product is never outdated as if there is a new version you just send yours in to be updated. The APL gear isn't really a modification as they are working with Esoteric so i would much rather call it a rebuild, doing things Esoteric could never do and stay profitable.

I don't think the mods on my Sony is anything but simple (about 7K worth of modifications - I bought the unit for a fraction of the cost though). I would love to hear some of APL creations though.

  2. Just buy an APL player and be done with it. You can have a digital input, volume control and a universal player that plays any of the old formats. I don't quite know what the price and features of the newest players but you should drop Alex a line. The guy who sold me my APL 3910 compared it to a dCS P8i and ARC Ref3 line stage (the APL has a built in volume control) the last day before he shipped it out and the other gear was blown away in every aspect. That's 25k$ against a 4k$ player and it's not even the newest version. This was in an email sent to Alex and not me where the seller said he was nuts for selling me the player and he wanted a NWO soon. Now mine is even better with the new AKM 32bit.

Wonder how the Exemplar and Modwright units measure up to APL stuffs.

  3. Purk,

I have not had the opportunity to hear a W11JPN yet. They are just too far out of my financial reach. I'd love to spend some time with them, however.

Also, the W1000 has synthetic leather.

I hope you get to check them out one of these days. IMO, the W11JPN is very similar to the W10VTG but with deeper extension, better imagining, and more details. The lacquer finish is also very beautiful and they are super comfortable. They are pretty nice sounding though but I don't think that they are worth the asking price. Honestly, if you have about $1200 to spend on a headphone, and don't mind an open design, I will be taking a hard look at the Grado HP1000.

  4. Oh come on, Nate. trust me, you hear the VTG, you'll sell your W5k instantly.

For real. I am finding myself in the need for a bit of cash, but I just cannot bring my self to sell my VTG. There is a magic there, which I just cannot break myself from. Think of the VTG as a sexy red head. Perfect body, a smile that will knock you out, a personality which just brightens the room anytime she enters, a butt that just won't quit. Its me and my VTG to the end.

Will you even take them over the W11JPN?

BTW, the earpads and headbands are also new. The earpads are the W1000's not the lambskin of the L3000 or thw W2002. I personally think the W10vtg is a nice sounding headphone and probably more balanced sounding than the Denon D5000, though the Denon might have more resolutions and details.

  5. Oh yeah dusty, there is a nice VTG for sale on head-fi right now, but no price listed. Just thought I'd give you a heads up.

That was my old pair that I recently sold. In great condition. The seller is a very very nice guy and is having a little bit of financial problem. All he wants is around 600 bucks I think, which isn't too bad.

  6. Hmmm, didn't seem difficult at all to drive when I heard it at the TO meet. Not sure if Ray has the bass light or bass heavy version though.

Then again, I was listening on the B52, the apache and my amp, so I don't *really* have any clue how hard they are to drive... The B52 and apache may not be stellar designs, but they put out a fair amount of voltage swing and current AFAIK. I guess I was just under the impression that they weren't that hard to drive...

If you have the two versions of the R10s side-by-side in a controlled environment for a year, you might agree with my findings. As for Ray's R10, I believe it is the bassier pair. What I can offer you guys is just my experience with them and the lighter bass version is much more difficult to drive and my SDS 6SN7 was not be able to supply enough juice to make them sound their best. I had Tom Hankins over to listen to them in many occasions and we agreed on our finding.

As for them being the hardest headphone to drive... I take it you don't have much experience with the K340 or K1000? :)

  8. Must.Know. How close to the L3K?

I had the the A950LTD and it was definitely closer to the A100Ti than the L3000. It definitely has bigger bass response than the both the A100ti and A1000, while has similar tonality to the L3000, but just not as refined. The bass is not as tight or as extended as the L3000. It is also slightly darker than the L3000.

  9. There must have been something wrong with that amp... I mean, the R10's aren't even all that hard to drive. ???Even so, with the R10's being a relatively easy load, he would have to listen at levels that would make MY ears bleed... and I'd have to hear that to believe it. :P

The bass light R10 is the most difficult to drive headphone I've heard. I had to upgrade my 6SN7 SDS to high voltage to drive the bass light R10 properly.

  10. You should check out a used Modwright Sony 999ES w/ Platinum mods or an Exemplar Denon 2900. These used units can be purchased for less than $1600 USD, which is an excellent bargain. I had the SACDmods Sony SCD-C555ES and I don't think it is as refined as the Exemplar or the Modwright Unit. The Zapfilter has a very powerful and upfront presentation, but not as refined or as liquid sounding as the Modwright and Exemplar units that I've tried.

  11. MarkL,

This has been covered many times. The SP amps using 6SN7 output tubes wont drive low impedence headphones to high levels. The fact you listen at high volumes only excerbates the problem. The SP amps can be fitted with a number of output tubes besides the original 6SN7GT's .... like the 5687/ 6BL7GTA/6BX7GT. If you want a SP amp that can drive ANY low impedence headphones try one using high voltage 6BL7GTA's or go with the Extreme.

I went through that process before. When I first got my R10, my SDS w/ 6SN7 tubes didn't do a good job at driving them. In fact, my HA2002 was doing a better job driving my R10 than my 6SN7 SDS. I bite the bullet and got the amp upgraded w/ high voltage option to run the 6BL7GT as well getting some tube adapters, and the improvement has been very night and day. I'm now running my SDS with the following tube combo for my R10s: Slyvania 6BL7GTs/GTAs as output and GE 12AY7GT or Tungsol 2C51 as a driver tubes.

Markl...I'm sorry to see that you are letting go of your R10. I wish you spend $1800 bucks and check out the Extreme Platinum w/ the R10 before selling them. Regarding the case, the retailed price for the carring case for the R10 is around $450 but Sony no longer has any more in stock. I searched for the case high/low from Sony & partstores.com and didn't find any.

  12. purk when are you going to put together a speaker system? :D

I do have a speaker system, just not in the same level as my headphone rig.

    Sony TA-E9000ES (process/pre-amp)

    Sony TA-P9000ES (multi-channel analog pre-amp)

    Sony TA-N9000ES (5.1 amp)

Sony CDP-XA7ES / Pioneer Elite 59Ai w/ modwright mod as source

    Paradigm Ref. 100 V.3 (fronts)

    Paradigm Ref C590 V.3 (center)

    Paradigm Atom (rears)

  13. BTW, tell the Chinese it's spelled Thiel....not Theil. ;)

Purk, :doghuh: I am going downstairs now and do two things.

Listen to music and forget you said that. ;)

Stop by tonight if you and Gia want. Bring the denon if you can. ;D

Matter a fact, want to trade out the NAD and the Denon for a few days?

Tom, I can bring Exemplar Denon along. I'm very curious about your NAD M5 myself so we can trade the player for a few days.

These are the tubes that I got for the Denon. The Amperex 7062 pinched-waist is the best tube for the Denon according to Hirsch and Boomana.
