  1. Hey, would that be the Headphile-modded Stax Lambda Pro that thrice used to own, but not anymore? I have a K1000 that's uncomfortable to wear and therefore gets very little use. It feels kind of like the Monkey King's constricting headband. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkey_King I also don't have a suitable power amp for it. I don't know about selling it though. These discontinued headphones seemingly only go up in price.
  2. I believe most Accuphase CDPs can be adjusted for 100V, 110V, 220V, etc. Previous models could be switched easily, while the recent DP-500 requires opening the bottom of the case and desoldering and soldering a piece of wire.
  3. purk, you also need to acquire two more R10s, one less-bass and one more-bass, and recable them with XLRs. Of course, you would also need an SDS-XLR. Then you can let us know how the two balanced units compare with the two stock units. Whoa, I didn't know telling other people what they need could be such a rush.
  4. I use the AT-HA5000 and Raptor. I don't use the L3000 with the Lehmann Black Cube Linear or G&W AT-F100, two other amps I currently have. I've always thought the RS-1 sounded OK driven by the Raptor. The other amps I've tried don't do better. But the RS-1 ranks very far down in my preference ranking. I would be very pleased if another amp improves it sound.
  5. It's very difficult for me to imagine the R10 with bass quantity even close to the L3000, especially the less-bass R10. On my system, driven by the AT-HA5000, Raptor or Lehmann BCL, I would describe the less-bass R10's bass as "dainty." Sure, it has great soundstaging, air, imaging and that superb midrange, but there's very little bass impact. Does this mean purk and Mr. Ulveling have been listening to and enjoying a completely different sound than I've ever heard? I've been listening to a crappy-sounding R10? Icarium, I think your posts are great, very informative. Your long "blabbermouth" post (I mean this in the best sense possible, really) on the NorCal Meet thread was superb and made me feel as if I was standing next to you and Mikhail. Please double or triple your rate of posting.
  6. I also use a 13" Macbook and its screen is really tiny. All right, I admit you guys are eagle eyes and I'm more like a rhino. Hmm, what if my ears are as bad as my eyes? I agree, how long did it take to make that post, clicking on all those smilies and typing? And he mis-spelled "embarrassed," that's embarrassing, for a dork.
  7. I just used a tape measure to measure the distance from the monitor to my face. Whoa, a foot is really long! My face is usually in a range from a little over 2 feet to almost 4 feet away from the monitor.
  8. I'm using a 24" monitor at 1920x1200 resolution. I assume many of you are also using large monitors? I don't like sitting very close to the monitor. I'm around 5 feet away, more if leaning back on the chair. I can use the zoom function on Firefox to expand text size, but the smilies are fixed-size. Wait, what happened to jinp6301 when he made fun of the smilies? I can't edit the original post. Help? Random smilie ->
  9. I agree about the fundamental trade-off. The Stax O2 seems pretty close to being both airy and punchy. I would choose it as a better all-rounder over the R10 or L3000. You're probably one of the few people I might trust over my own ears. Hmm, L3000 more detailed than W5000? Maybe listening volume is a factor here. I usually listen at a low volume, which often seems "just right" with the W5000. The L3000, and also the HD600 and HD650, seem to sound better at a higher volume than my normal setting and I find myself turning up the volume. I actually haven't listened to the L3000 much since buying it, so it's possible I'm not familiar enough with its sound. Aaaagh, maybe it hasn't been fully burned-in.
  10. Wow, some unexpected good advice here! And I thought head-case was mainly for joking around. I'm going to use the balanced R10 with a SinglePower Supra XLR. I've been looking into other recabling options besides SinglePower. Enigma Audio has recabled one R10 before. Another option is Jena Labs (very expensive!), which has recabled an R10 for a member at head-fi. One reason I'm leaning towards the less-bass unit has nothing to do with sound. I ordered replacement earpads for the more-bass unit and installed them already. Those glued-on pads would have to be taken off for the recabling. The less-bass unit still has its old pads on, and I've ordered replacement pads and a new headband assembly (damn expensive!) for it. So whoever recables the less-bass unit can take off the old pads, throw them away, recable and put on the new pads.
  11. An alternative, albeit much less attractive, is to make a post here and look at the right side of your post. As for myself, I'll continue to visit the linked site daily.
  12. Have a great meet, guys. Let us know all about balanced amps, L3000, HP-2, electrostats, K1000 super-systems, etc.
  13. I noticed there's a display at the bottom of the home page, showing "Users Online." I'm all alone here right now. It's kind of scary. I'm scared. Plus the fact that I can't tell the smilie icons apart... I'll just click on one at random... -> \
  14. Is it just me or do the smilie icons all look the same? Well, except for the confused, devil and afro ones. Even so, the question marks and the devil horns are really small. Sure, I can roll the cursor over them and see their labels while typing my post, but this doesn't work when reading a thread.
  15. I would be interested in more opinions about the W5000 vs. L3000. It seems that almost everyone thinks the L3000 is better. I prefer the W5000 over the L3000. It has better details, imaging and air, and has a larger soundstage. True, the W5000 has less body and weight, and both bass quality and quantity are inferior to the L3000's. The L3000 has always seemed to me a bit too closed-in and claustrophobic. I'm hoping a balanced recable and a balanced amp will improve the L3000. The W5000 w/Enigma Audio Oracle is very good already with its matching AT-HA5000 amp.
  16. I don't know what kind of headphone cable SinglePower uses, I assume it is some kind of oxygen-free copper. I'll ask. Other options might be Enigma Audio or maybe Apuresound? I've had excellent results with an Enigma Audio Oracle cable on the W5000, which is more detailed than the stock W5000. I believe both Enigma and Apuresound have recabled the L3000 and many other headphones, but not the R10. I have three more Oracle XLR cables on order, one of which could be installed on the R10 by a local audio shop. The thing is, they don't have any experience recabling the R10. The R10 stock cable is very nice. Cloth-covered, non-microphonic, very lightweight and ultra-flexible. It's the best-handling headphone cable I've used.
  17. Hey, the two threads have been merged, what efficiency! True, even the R10 with more bass doesn't have a lot of bass impact. I would prefer a bit more, which means the R10 with less bass can seem really lacking in bass. It can be especially jarring when switching from the HD650, L3000 or O2.
  18. OK, I started another thread with a poll. Is it dangerous to start duplicate threads here? Would everyone please move over to the new thread and post again? Hey, the poll options are pretty cool. Poll thread http://www.head-case.org/index.php/topic,1935.0.html
  19. I currently have two R10's which sound a bit different from each other. I'm trying to decide which one to send to SinglePower for a balanced recable. Mikhail told me he has recabled several R10's before, while I've never read about any other companies who have done so. Actually, there isn't much info about balanced R10's at all. I intend to keep one stock so I can compare it with the balanced recabled one. One has less bass but a better midrange and larger soundstage. Which one should be recabled, the one with less bass or the one with more bass?

  21. So, was the W5000 overshadowed by jpak's L3000?
  22. Thanks for the welcomes, I'll continue to drop by from time to time. For all intents and purposes, I consider posting here the same as the other forum. I've never felt that I was censored or restricted from posting what I think over there. OK, time to go start a "What is the best headphone for me?" thread. Would that result in me being banned?
  23. *flabbergasted* This function is cool! And that row of powerful buttons! Yes, I've thought about SFT Audio before. I thought he was inactive, but his site seems to be updated with the b22.
  24. I've always preferred the W5000 over the L3000. I listened to the L3000+Raptor a few days ago and thought it sounded bad. I couldn't listen for more than 10 minutes and switched to the HD600. Ah, no more closed-in and congested feeling. I was thinking about using the Apache as pre-amp with a FirstWatt power amp for the K1000. \ -- Sorry about the sequential-posts, there's no multi-quote option, or am I stupid? I have to cut & paste? What kind of forum is this?
  25. The DP-500 is breaking-in nicely. I think the DP-500 and DAC64 are roughly the same level of sound quality, and both are better than the Lavry DA10. The DP-500 is warm, smooth and very non-fatiguing. Sound seems to appear out of a vacuum, or a black void. This is good, yes, but the Chord also has a black background plus a better sense of air. Vocals such as Patricia Barber, Eva Cassidy sound a bit more realistic, as if the sound is actually passing through some air before reaching your ears. Their breathing is more realistic, and I also think the Chord is a bit more detailed. Some headphones such as the relatively brighter and thinner-sounding W5000, SA5000 and K701 benefit more from the DP-500's warmth, smoothness and body. The Chord isn't exactly thin and grainy, though. It's also very smooth and refined, much more so than the Lavry DA10. -- Regarding the W5000 and Raptor or HA5000, I think it sounds good with both amps. I prefer the HA5000 be a large margin, and use the W5000 almost exclusively with it. The W5000+HA5000 has a large soundstage, great air and a better-balanced tonality. Depending on the music and source, it can also be thin-sounding and harsh. If you like a warmer and more full-bodied and bassy sound, the Raptor would be a better choice than the HA5000. I would certainly like to hear a better amp with the W5000.
