  1. 300$ is a bit on the high side... :o Maybe I should sell mine...

    Are these rebranded Stax SR-X?

In any case, a bit expensive but not extreme by european standards.I've seen worse.

Micro Seiki made their own phones and even made an OEM version for Infinity. They are pretty different from almost any other phone I've seen but they can be a bitch to get working again as they all need new diaphragms.

  2. How much heavier does the HE90 feel vs the HE60? I can't imagine the HE60 being terribly comfortable for people with large heads. They have the Senn clamp, but not quite as much as the HD6x0

The HE90 is almost a third heavier but they are also quite a bit bigger. The main problem with them is that they won't have enough range on the headband so I can't make it big enough while the He60 fits like a glove.

Can the SRD-7 take around 350W/ch/8ohms of power?

Can it withstand 350w of power...no but it can be used with any amplifier though the extra power will only sound worse.

  3. Interesting that you prefer the HE60 over HE90? They must be good out of the BH. From my limited time with the SR-007, I think I'd also prefer the SR-007 over the HE60, but only by a hairs width. It's a completely different listening experience altogether.

It mostly boils down to the fact that the HE60 doesn't annoy me as much as the He90. Less diffused and with better bass and a believable soundstage. The HE90 is smoother and more rounded but I'd still go for the HE60 every time as they fit my head better.

  4. Haha I see. What would you think is a better choice: getting a SRM-T1 (modded) or a nice tube power amp (low power) to SRD-7?

Depend really on what you are looking for as it is a toss up between the extra dynamic sound or the intimacy and detail retrieval of an OTL amp. I prefer the amps but you could get a used T1 cheap so that might be the better choice.

  5. he has used Triports more than once, though.

Lets all just forget out that. :kitty:

The speakers in his office are e-stats? I recall them having cone-like drivers but with a ribbon/planar tweeters. But that's good to know.

There were different speakers in the pilot. I was pretty angry when the second episode was show and thery had swapped out the speakers for something small. :mikey2:

Btw. This weeks episode was simply brilliant.

  6. So I'm not the only one to notice these things. Speaking of hi-fi in TV, House has a pretty sweet setup too. If I remember correctly, he has some Duvelle omni-speakers, a SOTA tt (not sure which model), and don't remember what CDP.

He has Duvelle omnis in the apartment and Thor Audio electronics though they were stolen in one episode. You should really find the original pilot as the speakers in the office were different, Audiostatic electrostatic speakers. ;D Really tall but slim speakers.

  7. I am a bastard. I wouldn't hesitate trading with you too ;p For one thing it'll probably be awhile before I go the NWO route for monetary reasons (I want my power amp/speakers/more cables before it and I'm getting the dv60 as is right now) so the upgrades the UX-1 Limited has over the original UX-1 (Slight improvements to the audio sefction) would be nice to help tide me over while I wait for NWOfication. Plus the blackness.

I sent a message but haven't heard back. No matter really as I'd really like to start out with a 230v unit and they can be had cheap in Asia. If I find a APL 3910 I'll have that upgraded to full 32bit spec and spend the rest on speakers and all my amp projects.

I don't understand how anyone can sell an HE90. ???>:D

For that matter, how can anyone sell any headphone (unless it's an Ultrasone).

Well I hate to admit it but even I am selling a bit off the collection. :'(

  8. Yay. That is a great show and Hanks hi-fi was pretty good, Avid TT, some krell gear... ;D

I read an interview with the shows creator and he was shocked by how much the show was liked in Europe and that it didn't need to be on any restricted channels. Heck it's at 9pm on Sunday nights up here

  9. By the way, does anyone have an idea of how many watts the HE60 needs via SRD-7 to sound good? :P

It's not that much so 5w should be plenty. Dumping huge amounts of power into a SRD-7 is a moot point as speaker amps deliver much more current while the voltage stays pretty much the same and stats need voltage.

I'll probably be buying the black Stax Omega II to make the rounds at meets next year :kitty:

Way to go preaching the gospel

  10. I'd go with the Black one if you have the chance. Apparently there were only 50 made just for the ultra limited factor. Hell if you get that black one and trade me I'll ship you my silver one or deliver it to Alex for mods. I've seen the black and it looks better in person than you'd think.

That few huh... damn stop planting ideas in my head... :kitty: I'll drop the seller a line and see what happens. Now I've got to get some sleep.

  11. Its not the only one of the sins that applies to his love of 'stats. >:D

    Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... :o

Actually i had been thinking that he does. I remember he had one in his profile WAYYY before acquiring the he90/aristaeus but I wasn't sure and was way too lazy to check.

He's had it for awhile but never used it. I'm so happy that there are people just as crazy as me out in the world ;D

Well you can certainly buy it and it looks great and I'm sure is built will with great parts... but you are going to build your own at some point anyways (HEV90) so.. well then again you can afford it.

The parts could be better but I'd like to sample it and see if building my own, the way I like it is something worth pursuing. While the amp is similar to the HEV90 it is by no means the same so all comparisons are moot. A fully upgraded unit will not be cheap though as the amp parts are 2.5-3.5k$ easily and then there is the question about a new PSU... ??? It could be very nice with a simple unregulated, tube rectified supply filled with vintage NOS PIO caps.

Still... you might want to wait until the APL NWO 3.0 GO impressions come out and I finally will not only be the only one on head-fi/head-case that has heard it :)

I'm searching for a UX-1.... I almost jumped on the black one on Audiogon this morning but I'd really prefer a silver one. Must have something to do with seeing a glacier many times a day...

  12. I think the lack of differentiation between what is "good/likable" and what is "accurate" is a problem in the high end. Not saying I'm a perfect judge of accuracy but I think it is something that high end/cutting edge/state of the art designers should seek if they want to fall into that category.

I don't think music appreciation and being an audiophile is the same thing. People who say things like "Don't forget to enjoy the music" aren't seeking the same things I am. I love music. Music isn't so hard for me to like that I need a multi-thousand dollar system to enjoy it. Me being an audiophile is why I need that system.

The sad part is the most designers have lost that drive towards more accurate systems and have instead landed on some strange plateau of manufactured hi-end sound. This is why this there are all these small niche markets to satisfy the true music lovers that don't buy into the high-end crap. I can listen to music on just about anything but I have my rigs to get closer to the music, not to paint a pretty picture of how it should be.

  13. Randerson bought dwldghg's he90/aristaeus which were jjcha's so I doubt its akwoks unless navy homeboy has 2.

He does have two Aristaeus amps... ;D I might buy one of them though, just for kicks. My He90 is ohh so lonely... :'(

  14. There was no lead in the Mk1 but the finish was made using some chemicals that aren't allowed under the ROHS mandate. They only needed to change that but they also fixed the few issues that had surfaced in the 9 year production run and most of those were tied to the earpads.

  15. While a PIMETA isn't high end most of the real high end is DIY with hand made parts that would cost a fortune to make and the circuits optimized to perfection. There are only a handful of companies that make a no compromise stab at the high end while there are hundreds of DIY attempts because those individuals weren't happy with what the hi-fi industry was producing. The chassis work should be focused the best layout while being functional and not pretty so you can show off to your friends.

  16. Has anyone of us own them? Wonder what they sound like? What kind of issues anyway?

The fart is mostly gone and the bass has been altered with the new earpads so unlike the Mk1 which boomed away totally uncontrolled on a table the Mk2's have no bass unless they make a good seal on the head. This is similar to the 4070 and the owner of the working unit said it has even more bass punch then the Mk1. The acoustical loading of the drivers has changed so they might be slightly easier to drive but not by much. I'm still waiting on the Japanese street price for a SR-007A before I buy one though I'd really like an export model.

  17. I totally sorta pretty much maybe disagree with you icelander. Why? Because just as you have optimized your setup for your O2, I have optimized my setup for the HE90. Yes silver may be more revealing, blah blah and blah. But the way my system sounds I would be hard pressed for anyone to find major problems (except for the spatiality issue and the slightly diffuse nature which IS true of the HE90).

But brightness and upper mid harshness? NOPE! Not if you have it even moderately setup correctly with the right amp (like ES2) and tubes (Mullard XF2) and cables - thick copper! =)

    Neil

We always disagree... ;D but we can get serious here for a second. What other IC's have you tried then the VD stuff? All the VD's I've tried are so horribly colored that I wouldn't use them on my clock radio. All that metal creates a lot of skin effect and all that RF shielding kills the high frequencies. You could ask Alex to bring some of his cables or sample some cheap silver cables like the Kimber Select and Ridge Street Audio.

Btw. I was almost a member of the APL family this week, but the unit is found wasn't the real deal, so say thanks to Alex from a crazy Icelander when he brings you the NWO3.0GO. 8)
