  1. Too good to be true...although the Marantz's are in perfect shape, the Advents need to be refoamed. I finally got around to taking off the burlap cover.

I'm just curious now, if the coil is damaged from it being sagged for possibly/likely a LONG time. There's literally NO FOAM, just coil and dustcap. The red tweeter above though, looks fine.

Well, I guess the cosmetic condition kinda had me assuming on the Advents. There's only one cosmetic flaw on the cabinets, and it's actually on the burlap cover, it has a snagged string. Otherwise, mint. Well, maybe 9/10 for you really discerning folk. How hard is it to refoam one of those? Or would it be better for me to just get new drivers?

  2. I did basically the same thing, except they continued to sound like crap, so I sold them and got some ksc-35's. Now that is a good headphone.

    Biggie.

Different strokes I guess. I have KSC35's and 75's, and although a BIG step up from buds, they still didn't have enough coloration, errr, punch for for my tastes. ;) Really great neutral cans though, just not my flavor..

  3. Bringing my pops back from the airport, and tomorrow is trash day. I'm driving down my street when I see some speakers, a large bunch of electronics rather, sitting on the side of the road. My house is like 8 houses down, so I decide to just go home grab the cargo van and drive back by and if they're even decent, I'll pick them up.

So, what do I find? I'll let the crappy pics speak for themselves (GF has the camera, so I had to use my phone).

    5e7666ffd8f6.jpg

    cb1b166697ca.jpg

    e7bb00431f53.jpg

    They are:

    Marantz SP 2050

    The Smaller Advent Loudspeaker

Air Suspension Quadra Linear Horn System

All the speakers are in MINT condition. Foam and everything is MINT. Hopefully the dew that was starting to build-up on them didn't damage anything.

When I stopped, I figured the centers would be pushed in , or need to be refoamed. Nopes. All of them are in great shape. I was expecting the larger speakers to be some white van speaker, or at most something like Pioneer or whatever. Now I know it may not be a TOTL speaker, but a dece find none the less...FREE.

I grabbed those other horn speakers cause frankly, they looked cool, and they were the other speakers out there in good shape. I have no idea what they are or have never heard of them before. It says the model is "KDD-R W". My googling found nothing.

Pretty sweet find though. The other electronics and stuff there was what appeared to either be remodeling/purging of audio equipment, or his wife got mad and threw his stuff on the curb cause the stands and shelving were all broken. Doubtful though, cause it was all neatly placed. I was looking to get some smaller speakers for my room, but now that I have these Advents....I won't need to buy anything.

I haven't powered them up yet, cause it's 11:15pm here and I don't want to wake anybody, and I have to get up at 5am tomorrow, but I thought I would just share my find. And if anybody is able to lend me any info on the speakers, feel free to post them here! Especially those funky looking air suspension ones....

  4. Worth a listen? I have the chance to get one of these for fairly cheap at $279.

    http://www.consumer.philips.com/consumer/en/us/consumer/cc/_productid_MCD908_37_US_CONSUMER/DVD-Micro-Theater+MCD908-37

Reads that it has "Hi-Fi tubes". Although it doesn't say which ones, you think it roll-able? Also, it has HDMI slots, and a 720p and 1080i output abilities. Doesn't sound like a bad deal for $279...

Even at the $459 street price, it doesn't sound like it'd be a bad deal. Anybody hear one of these?

  5. Have the opportunity to get a 16gb version. Right now I'm fairly content running my 2gb Nano/Hornet combo, but wondering if the line-out of the touch is superior the the line-out of the 1st Gen Nano with the Wolfson DAC. I read somewhere on head-fi and other places that Apple has cleaned up the LOD portion of the docks with minimal PCB traces and a clean signal. I just can't remember if the touch was part of that "cleaning up".

The only advantages the touch (DAP wise, no other features taken into consideration) would have over my Nano would be the storage space with the SQ. So is it a worthwhile upgrade? Or should I just stick with my Nano? If anything, I may pick it up for the GF for xmas....

  6. Just noticing how high they were rated in some of the posts in this thread. Now I do finally get ksc75's. Bought an amp on HF and the guy threw in a pair for free. Had never heard them before today. No hype intended, but for a 25.00 headphone, wow.

Although, they sound like POOP when they're fresh out the box. I'm not too big a believer in burn-in, but these did change quite substantially in 1000 hours. Cleaner, tighter, and not as boomy. I just left them plugged in for a month, and every other day listened, and at each time, the changed were subtle, but I'll never forget how it sounded out of the box....blech.

I actually have a fairly significantly modded Kramer'd KSC75, the only thing missing is a recable, as it has a screen, the thicker foam, blue tack, etc. Although it sound really airy by comparison, it sound a little shrill on some songs, and doesn't have the bass that the Mallows do...in any respect.

    But meh...to each thier own.

  7. Seems kinda like the DIY version of the iMod. Seeing as how it removes the PCB board traces, replaces caps, etc. But instead of using the HP jack, it still uses the dock connection.

    http://ipastudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2905

Seems like it could be fairly easily done on your own. I haven't seen the pics myself, as I'm not a member of ipastudio, but this was on another forum, and was curious if any of you DIYers did this? how do you think this SQ wise compares to the iMod? "Will it sound as good as my meridian CDP????" lol.

  8. Oh bullshit. Here, let me help you out by quoting your entire post, in context.

So how would you like to explain the bolded parts in your own post? Let me guess, "that's not what I meant, what I really meant was..." ::)

So I guess you failed to point out the part where I said "I personally could care less what it's classified as..." before the bold in the last sentance. I guess you also failed to read that I DID buy an amp that was aesthetically plain, and all performance, and was a DIY design to boot. Nice. I like people that only read what they want to read. ::)

Point I was making with that last portion of the post you bolded is, regardless of HOW little you show it, you like to have aesthetically nice looking things, even if it DOES play #2, 3, 4 or 908763249875639876 to sound quality(or whatever it pertains to). If you didn't like nice looking things, and cared STRICTLY on performance or practicality in everything, you'de have a really ugly wife with an awesome personality and ride a bicycle to work cause it's the best for the environment, keeps you in shape, has the cheapest maintenance and you don't have to worry about rising gas prices.

Hey look, I can be a fecetious fuck too ::)

    /end crap

  9. Your head is completely inside your colon. If it's better, it's high end, if it's not, it's not. If someone hand builds a car, and it wins, who gives a shit what the wankers with expensive frames call it? :kitty:

That's what I said at the very beginning...

I personally don't think you can count a DIY as high end.

I chose the $50 option. Why? Cause I didn't need the charging circuit OR the metal case cause it was going to be in a bag at all times....that's called smart shopping. Wink

Not pointed at either of you, but a perfect example of people not reading and jumping on the lynching wagon. I personally AM for function over form and could care less what's classified as what....95% of the time. That other 5% of the time is when I can either afford it or make it pretty myself. And that 5% only comes around 5% of the time, lol.

  10. Since when was DIY expensive in comparison with commercial products? Any commercial product can be obliterated by a much cheaper DIY product.

    I never said it couldn't....

I don't even know what to say. You obviously haven't seen much DIY. Especially outside the world of headphones.

So a DIY designed piston head, connecting rod, main bearings, motorcycle rearsets, fabricated turbo kits, home speakers, DIY TT....hmm, I think I've seen alot of DIY things, ESPECIALLY outside of the realm of headphones. If anything, that's the MAIN place I've seen "diy". I've just been fortuneate enough to have been spoiled by those DIY things being done by a machine (CNC) and other parts being pieced together for an end product.

So just because someone chooses not to waste stupid money, it's not high quality? Many commercial amps have enclosures that cost times more than the internals.

    See above

lol what? How does that metaphor even apply to audio equipment?

Because, the parts are fabricated from scratch, i.e. raw Reynolds tubing cut, madrel bent, welded and finished to parts self designed and assembled from a CNC machine. Just because he has the tooling available doesn't make it any less DIY. Everything was made from scratch, even at times, the ball bearings themselves because he couldn't find the appropriate size. He is essentially DOING IT HIMSELF FROM SCRATCH.

I don't know what your friends are like, but I know people would be impressed if by self-built gear. What do you think is more impressive to someone who doesn't know anything about audio (and there are many people out there who scoff at audiophiles)?

    - I bought an awesome $3k amplifier for my headphone.

    - I built a $1k amplifier for my headphone from scratch. It beats products out there costing three times as much. I could have spend a couple more hundred bucks on a case, but I didn't.

    See above.

Once again, the choices are simple:

    - Good looking $3k commercial amp

    - "incomplete" looking $2k DIY amp that utterly destroys the $3k commercial amp

    - DIY amp stuck in a case that looks even better than the commercial amp for $3k and still utterly destroys the $3k commercial amp

Wouldn't most people choose the second choice? That is what you see and that is where your impressions come from.

umm...see above again. I'm ALL FOR doing it myself and saving money whenever possible. But personally, if it's not cost effective and feasible for MYSELF(time, experiance, and knowledge), I would rather buy from somebody, either building it for me, or from a manufacturer to save myself the headaches.

So what do commercial makers have that separates them from DIY makers? Two CNC lathes?

Sometimes it is. Your statement right there, as sarcastic as it is, is the answer. If somebody can make the end product AESTHETICALLY look better for within reason for slightly more money, that IS what seperates them.

If you would have taken the time to read, you woulda saw that I said from a CONSUMER POV, aesthetics are sometimes important. And alot of times, aesthetics are what seperates the "diy" from the manufacturer. Shit, look at Ray, he has overpriced cMoys....they sell because they're in a nice case. Does it make them any better? No. But you can see, aesthetics(price) made it "high end".

As for the "lol", I really am chuckling at that point. No hard feelings...this isn't head-fi, lol.

  11. The only diy projects that don't have cases or have "esoteric(read:bootleg)" ones are usually mine but I am a fake noob diy wannabe so please do not lump me together with the general diy populace who usually do a fine job. Example one two three four five six etc...

Do you even look at what the "internals" are inside most "high-end" electronics? I have never seen anything "match" because there are no such thing as pcb or point to point cases...

example of a HIGH END ZOMG VALUE FTW amp: Krell baby!

Again, you can choose a METAL case that can be personalized and made to look good with engravings or colors/paint or added on structures etc... Where did you get the idea that diy = plastic case or hammond + shoddy drilling?

PROVEN DESIGNS LIKE TEH HORNET RIGHT? THEY IMPROVED IT WITH A DAC!!! AND IT STILL HAS SPACE FOR THE GIANT CAP!

    :doghuh:

as an aspiring diyer these comments just tick off this midol-deprived-hungry-as-hell kirby. Meet ticked-face: (>`-`)>

Altmann is an example of a company who doesn't use a case. I was using 'DIY' as an example cause it's a bit more popular for it to be left "naked". Stop taking everything so literal, it's annoying.

When I was saying "internal matching the externals", it meaning, the exterior should looks just as HQ as the boutique parts are inside of it...again, taken out of context/taken literally. I was referring to a plastic case, because well, lets see, your DIY amps are housed in what? Plastic or metal hammond cases. Graham Slee's amps are in a portables plastic case....remember his beta amp that mrarroyo posted? It was SLAMMED because the case/switch holes looked very DIY, and it was just a beta!

  12. I hear ya...but alot of people CAN'T build and buy a DIY design, like the ones you listed.

And unfortuneatly, some of the builders use cheap-ass-wanker parts and it as a whole, makes the whole DIY amp a sour view, especially if they use the WRONG parts, but same general lay-out. Obviously the buyer has no fucking clue of the specifics of what they're buying into other than a DIY design that somebody has to build because they can't built it themselves, and they've heard "dat Beta double-duece is mad tyte soundin yo!"....

If I could EFFECTIVELY build my own amp I would, and aside from the browsing of boards, I don't really have that much time on my hands. I built a cMoy once, and was exceedingly proud of myself, lol. Worked good for what it was. However, I didn't like the sound, and sold it for a commercial offering. And I'm willing to bet, the general unbeknowing noob will associate that cMoy sound/quality, with most anything DIY....

  13. Nice how that was kinda thrown out of context, but I get the point. I shouldn't have lumped the DIY all together. Aesthetics included. But it was a general statement I should have elaborated on.

But for the most part, alot of the DIY projects have generic cases, or no cases at all. I understand that there is a bit of esoteric aura around that, but the bottom line is, it looks incomplete.

Hi-end is a perceived value(mostly of a commecrial context), as evident by this thread. It is of my opinion, that the externals should match the internals. I'm well aware of subtleness, etc, but from a consumers POV, if you're spending a large sum of money, and you get a plastic case, chances are, you're a little irked, and will end up venting on a forum like this one. I don't care how good it sounds. You'de be complaining if you spend a large sum of money, and got a crap fit and finish.

As for the karting, just because it is a mass produced frame/part DOES NOT necessarily mean there's R&D (hell, look at RSA, lol). Granted, majority have R&D behind them, but also, many companies take the designs of PROVEN working models and just improve upon it simply because they have the resources. I can honestly say that I don't have a heavy background in karting, but a buddy does..

He has a CNC lathe and 4D machine in his garage (had his entire house rewired to accept the machines in his garage) and one offs many motorcycle and karting parts. I know simply from his abilty to cnc parts at his discretion, there have been companies who have observed his designs and actually bought his ideas from seeing the performance at the races. R&D is important, but it's not everything, as evidenced by him. He's a one man show and does karting as a hobby, it's kinda the reason I used him as an example.

  14. Hmm...well, that killed my curiousity about the Darths. I like DT770's but the mods actually made it WORSE? Or was it because you had to spend extra moneyz that really didn't do anything?

Is there a smaller tip I can put on the mallows and keep the same sound? I have 7 year old girl sized ear canals, and the diameter of them when pushed in, while it doesn't hurt it's a slight relief when I'm done listening after even an hour of listening...

  15. 1. Senn 600

    2. Denon D2k

    3. Shure E500

    4. Westone UM2

    5. Grado HF1

    6. Beyer DT990

    7. JVC Marshmallows

    8. Senn 650

    9. Beyer DT770

    10. Koss KSC75

    11. Grado SR125

    12. Grado SR80

    13. Grado SR60

    14. Ety ER6i

    15. Darth Beyer V2 Paduak

    16. AKG K26P

Now keep in mind, this is my opinion/ears.

Whoa...Darths FAR below MARSHMALLOWS??? I love my mallows, but that's a statement. I haven't heard Darths, but it's even far below the normal DT770...

Can I ask why? Especially given the response people have on them over that head-fi....or, is that just head-fi? lol.

  16. I personally don't think you can count a DIY as high end. I know it may be expensive, but the whole doing it yourself thing doesn't really ooze "hi end" as much as something from from a manufacturer. I dunno, it can be just as high quality, and in many cases, HIGHER quality, but meh...I dunno...hard to explain. I also think aesthetics play a fairly decent part in it's consideration, a you could have the most rediculous parts, if it looks like ass or 'meh', it's grouped as so.

To give an analogy, it's like Karting. I dunno how many of you kart, but a homemade custom made Kart frame/parts, even if it performs better, it's looked at as custom, not "high-end", even if made of Ti or whatever. Whereas the guy down the pit has an expensive manufactured frame, and everybody looks as his parts as high end, and yours as just custom. Even if it's clearly better, in both QC standards, contruction, and performance, they're not quite in the same "class", even though they compete against eachother directly.

Personally, I could care less what it's "classified as"...lets face it, it's nice to brag to friends or other people that "this is high end"(or just knowing yourself), but if they're not in the hobby, ESPECIALLY with headphones, they'll just give you a look like :doghuh: and think you're an idiot for spending so much money on "headphone stuff" regardless, lol.

  17. Oh well...I think it was that mod with a monkey for his avatar that was bothering me.

I thought I was the only guy with monkey for thier av...for a sec I thought you were talkin about me...there's no way in hell I'de be a mod there. I'm not cool enough and don't suck enough sponsor wanker.

  18. Is there any way to keep artist title info of the tracks as I rip them to my computer? Everytime I rip a CD I just get, Track 01, Track 02, etc. I want to condense my CD's onto my computer, but this is tedious as hell to have to do each time, especially if using iTunes to organise my music, I have to do it AGAIN when I import the files to assign the meta tags. Otherwise, it just arranges it by the name of the file as "Oasis - Wonderwall", not sortable by artist, or album, etc. Suck ass.

Even on the CD's that display text in your car CD player(most all of them), still don't rip with artist and title, just as tracks.

Is it the program(s) I'm using? I'm using iTunes, Foobar or CDBurner XP Pro and neither of them rip titles. Is there a program that does?

    Suck ass....

  19. It's a story of sorts. If you like poker, you'll dig this. If not, you won't have any clue of wtf I'm talking about. You'll prolly give me a look like this:

    Confused-Dog-Note-Card-I11765891.jpeg

Before I start with the story, I knew tonight was going to be odd, cause a couple games before a lady got dealt Q, 10, 2, 5 in BOTH of her hands...that's astronomical odds there.

Anyhow, on with the story. I was in class staying fresh till I get an audition. And the class that's in there now is learning/playing $2 Omaha 8 or better (hi-low). For those that like poker, but don't know how to play Omaha, it's Hold-em, but you get dealt 4 cards before the flop, but you can only use two cards, and HAVE TO use three on the board. Basically, it's hold-em, with more cards in your hand.

Anyhow, we have to play two hands, so the dealer in the box has to read/deal out more hands/more practice. Also, nobody is allowed to fold, cause you're there for the dealer (it's dealer school) it gives them more hands to read, and more actions to do.

    So I call the blinds.

    So along comes the flop:

    287412424.jpg

There will be no low...so we're playing strictly a high game of Omaha. Yaya, no split pot possibility!

Since I'm the last two hands at the table, I get to see everybody's action, and they all check, so I give them a bet of $2....everybody calls and think I have trip jacks....heh. I call with my other hand (which has the dealer button).

    Along comes the turn:

    287412417.jpg

So there are people with kings in thier hand, cause why else would you raise when everybody checks and I bet $2?....But that's still nothing like what was about to happen.

    Along comes the river:

    287412418.jpg

The guy accross the table bets $2 he has something. He still thought I had trip Jacks, but obviously thought he had me beat. Bluffing is stupid, since you can't fold in the class. All bluffing does(in this class atleast), is show what kind of player you are...you don't want that. So he had something. Remember, you can only use THREE on the board, and TWO in your hand.

Naturally, he capped it out, because people were curious and kept rerasing, and got to show his hand 1st.

    287412415.jpg

Damn....trip aces....there's only a couple hands that beat that, because I know an Ace is in my hand....there is no Quad ace possibility. MAYBE somebody has pocket kings to make the Full house...but I know they don't, there was no check betting or anything. But he thought he had me beat, because I bet on the jacks on the board when everybody checked.

Here's what I turn over in one hand:

    287412421.jpg

I flop over the quad jacks....table goes crazy, cause even with the amount of hands dealt at school, quad anything doesn't come up often, let alone ON THE FLOP. Let alone jacks, let alone, when he has a trip Aces...

And here's what I got in the other hand:

    287412423.jpg

It was like straight out of a damn movie....two of the worst beats you can possibly have, I had two bad beats in one hand. But I had the two best possible hands in BOTH of my hands.....absolutely rediculous...the room was called over to watch cause I told Chaz, the instructor to come over, put his game on hold and watch this hand. It went nuts...the most rediculous ending you could have sans the unreal crap like quad aces getting beat by a royal...but this was pretty unreal as it stood. I'm still floored by the fact that I really pulled one of those hands, let alone BOTH....

    ---------------------------

For those that don't play poker, the odds of getting EITHER of the hands I as holding are astronomical.Even more Astronomical having the Royal of SPADES. The odds of having BOTH of those hands AT THE SAME TIME, you're odds are better getting struck by lightning THREE times...maybe I shoulda played the lotto last night. Or went to the poker room or Jasper. The jackpot in Jasper for a Royal Flush right now is $18,000....In the Poker Room, it has to be of spades, and is I think at like $30,000. I would have given the dealer a crazy tip if I won either of those jackpots....hell, I'm just lucky I had enough luck left in me to make the drive home without dying, lol.

Moral of the story....tip your dealer, GOOD. You never know what you'll get dealt.

  20. You're searching a little hard to find controversy there. 99% of Head-Fi reads your post and looks like this.

    Confused-Dog-Note-Card-I11765891.jpeg

And the 1% that can read and comprehend what you're saying doesn't care because they already knew it. Plenty of manufacturers use a higher gain to give the perception that their amp has more power or to accommodate low gain sources more easily. Most ignorant users get concerned if they have to turn the volume pot up more than half way.

    Good point, lol.
