  1. The two 18ga conductors act as another shield I guess since they aren't tied to the Senn plugs, only the 1/4" plug. Again, pretty odd construction but hey I like the way it sounds so I should really stop complaining.

They're not shielding anything, it's just extra bulk to make the cable thicker. The wire costs practically nothing for a length like that, so I suppose it's worth it to be able to charge more for the cable than they would be able to if they left it much thinner.

  2. 10W?! At what impedance? Did Stax put a warning in the user manual? I imagine most people have amps with over 10W of power. Last time I checked, not everyone had 300B SETs

I thought you knew better than this, Jonathan. :P

If you're only drawing say 1W from the amp, it makes no difference whether it's a 10W or 100W amp. That's just the maximum amount of power the amp is rated to output.

If you were to plug a 100W lamp into a 5kW generator, the lamp doesn't explode in a massive fireball. Same idea.

  3. I've played the K340 at around 100dB without it sounding strained or any more coloured than it normally sounds anyways. It does have some weird colourations and soundstage issues inherent to the design of the headphones, but if anything they normally seem more noticeable at lower volumes to me.

  4. I have most of my CDs ripped onto the computer as FLACs, which gets periodically synced to an external harddrive that is normally kept disconnected. Since I rarely use the original CDs (just keep them on the media shelves), I figure I'm pretty well covered as far as backups are concerned. Assuming all else being equal in the hardware chain, I don't believe in any inherent fidelity difference playing back from the original CD, a burned CD, or from the harddrive.
