  1. That looks like it was a fun ride Nate.

I took it easy on my ride yesterday.  I made a couple of changes on the bike that were the wrong direction so I did not try to push things.  I did end up meeting a couple of riders that had stopped at the beach for a rest just like I do.  We talked for a bit and I was invited to loin there Saturday morning ride.  All the rides I have done so far have been solo efforts so it may be time to ride with some others.  I'm actually looking forward it.

Saw this over on paceline.  Not my size, which is a good thing, but it has to be one of the best descriptions ever.

  2. Brent ,

I did not realize that you had back issues.  Knowing that, now I would say go with what Nate said.  Riding has helped my back issue considerably.  I still take it easy but it does not hurt anywhere near what it did before I started riding.

    Aerius,

That looks like a lot of fun.

  3. Brent, I say go for it.  If there is the possibility of a rest stop somewhere in the ride that should help.  I just did my first 20 mile ride last weekend and it hurt.  Mostly due to me being a fat guy trying to ride 20 miles.  I am going to try it again this weekend just to prove that I can do it on my 40th birthday(Sunday).

Thanks again for putting me in touch with Troy.  He has given me a couple of unique options so far and seems genuinely interested in helping me out.

  4. ^^^very nice.

I got in almost 10 miles today.  I'm not exactly sure why but the whole ride was a little uncomfortable today.  No matter what position I was in I just could not get into a groove while riding.  I guess some days are like that.

  5. If those were clinchers I would be all over them.  The price is right in my ballpark too.

Thanks for the info on the pedals.  That make me feel a little better about them now.

That ride looks like it would be amazing if your legs can take it.  11,000 ft and 104 miles would be insane.

  6. For custom builds Peter White seems to be a favorite in the Clydesdale section on bikeforums.  His prices look to be pretty reasonable as well.  I've seen a few others to but Peter's name comes up in almost ever "I need a strong wheel" thread.

I'm also looking for some pedals that I can really hammer on and nor worry about.  The Look Keo classics that I have are rated for a much lighter weight than I would like.  I did not realize it when I bought them.  I don't stand to ride so I'm not putting a whole lot into them right now but that will change soon enough.  Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks again for the encouragement guys, I really do appreciate it.  AS a side effect of me riding my boss has started walking daily.  He is a little bigger than I am but weighs less (that whole fat/muscle ratio thing) and he seems to be doing pretty well.  Every time I start to exercise he is usually not far behind.  It's good for both of us.

  7. It went right past spring and into damn hot here.  The Garmin said 104 at the end of yesterdays ride.  Average was 98.3.

Rest day for me today.  I'm looking at a new set of wheels.  I've had to true mine a couple of times now and the rear is out of round with a distinct low spot that I cannot get out.  And my two unintentional off-road excursions yesterday did not help matters any.  looking for something bullet proof for a fat guy.  Enve and Madfiber both have no weight limit wheels but I cannot justify the price of those to the wife.  Easton EA90SL wheels seem to be a popular choice, as well as Velocity Deep V's.  Anyone have a good choice.

  8. Did 20 miles this morning.  The whole ride was one big PR for me.  20 miles, 1161 ft elevation gained, 12.1 mph avg.  I'm slow but I did make my goal today.

Count me in for a jersey.  Color does not matter for me.

  9. That sucks about the broken tibia.  Glad she is okay otherwise.

I'm soooo temped to get in on the Kirk deal.  I'm sure it would lead to a very "Serious" discussion when my wife returns from her current business trip.  I can hear it now, "You bought what? 5K for a bike frame and nothing on it? Are you nuts?"  My only response would be that it is my 40th birthday gift to myself.  At which point I may not make it to 41.  Actually if I asked nicely she might let me do it.  Stranger things have happened.

  10. Glad to hear she is okay.  A crash at any speed sucks but at 30mph it would really suck.

I think about it all the time on my rides.  We have to deal with large, 3'-4', iguanas running around everywhere down hear.  If you hit one at speed it could really do some damage.  Luckily they usually run away from you.

  11. I got in a 10 mile ride this morning.  I averaged 12mph, which is pretty good for me.  Considering half the ride is up hill, I'm happy with that right now.  I'm still tinkering with my setup and almost have everything just right.  I would never have thought that 5mm up in seat height could make that much difference but it does.  My knees felt much better after that change and I was able to keep up a better pace.

  12. I'm slowly getting the parts together for mine.  I have a design in my head for the enclosure.  Heat sinks are my hang up right now.  I know what I want but can't find them.  Something like that solid machined aluminum block Blue Hawaii that Birgir posted would be sweet.  Although I would need a crane to move it.

  13. Have not ridden as much as I would like in the past couple of weeks due to work.  I did manage to get out this morning for a very quick 5 miles.  It's better than nothing.  I headed for the steepest hill on the base just to see what I was up against.  I got about half way up before I had to turn around.  I don't know what the grade is but my truck does not even like to go up it.  I ended up zig-zagging going up due to the steepness.  My goal is to make it to the top some time this year.

  14. ^^How does it sound with this mod?

I got word back from Futurelec and they are sending another package with the rest of my parts.  I should have it in a week or so.

If the DY294 is only good for weeding out the obvious fakes, what would you guys suggest for a good test box.  As long as it is not outrageously expensive I would buy one just for piece of mind.  I've got several projects coming up that I need to make sure all the parts are good for.

  15. I ordered some 2sc3675's from Futurelec and the package showed up today with 9 of the 36 I ordered.  Everything indicates that there should be 36 in the package.  Needless to say I was not happy.  I'm waiting for a reply from them about it.

I did a quick hfe check on the ones I got with the crappy meter at work and all were between 65-85.  Is this about right?

Will the DY294 tester be good enough to check all the parts for the T2?  I have no issue buying one if it will do the job.  Is there something better for a reasonable price.  I've looked around and don't really know what to look for.
