  1. I'll also add, that when these guys show up at CanJam it means they value you and your opinion. And when they're there you have the opportunity to voice your pleasure/displeasure at their products and corporate activity.

My friend and I went to listen to Monster Beats Studio headphones. They sounded extra bassy. He mentioned that, not even "these are bassy and muddy" but like "these are kind of bassy" and the rep started telling us how they're studio accurate and lots of recordings have boosted bass. :asshat:

  2. Well you've read different opinions... if you can't place some weight on those based on previous opinions of those people, then you have no other way to tell but to listen for yourself. Don't know why you have those 3 Grados in particular (esp. SR-60+MS-1) but the HF-2 is better unless you like that type of Grado treble.a

  3. Yeah, this thread is not helping at all. I've been saving up for some speakers... managed to dodge the HF-2 and stay on course, but reading this thread... ugh! :basement:

Maybe I should do some spring cleaning and get rid of all my other audio gear... hmmm... must resist temptation.... Hopefully the right speaker deal comes along before I loose my self control. :(

Easy, just buy the HF-2 and you won't need to think about the HD800.

  4. True however I do have a B22 which to my ears is one of the best amps overall.

Is Penger's "Headroom Ultra Desktop Amp/DAC" that much better?

I didn't like the HD650 out of Frank Cooter's massive amp. Still very dark IMO.

  5. How's the treble compared to other Grados? Slightly harsh highs and claustrophobic soundstage are my main caveats with modern Grados, but the "mini PS-1" thing is getting into my head and I'm highly tempted to put an order right now.

I didn't think that was the case at all. With bowls.

  6. elnero and Cankin, re: MS-2 vs HF-2

The MS-2 was good and fun, but it was very "Grado" with a little too much treble energy and seemed to lack lows extension or mids fullness a bit. I didn't find any problems with the HF-2, no fatigue, all smooth, everything sounded great. I'll go listen again today but I think these thoughts should stay the same. This was out of thrice's Buffalo -> tooleaudio balanced M^3 (I used the SE HF-2 because the balanced one had flats)

  7. Some more general ones...

Smyth: I did not expect that realism that people were raving about, but this is the real deal. I briefly sat down at Beyer and did their little head motion thing... a toy compared to Smyth's stuff.

HF-2: a little extra bass oomph, but very good balance. Preferred it over HF-1 and RS-1. Nick Drake's Fruit Tree (acoustic folk) sounded incredible.

Shure headphones: The highest model SHP840 was rather nice and not too closed sounding, comfy, and solid. The lowest 240 model is bad.

L3000: Just not my thing. Sounded artificial.

D5000: Definitely not my thing. Weird, boomy, bland, something.

    Monster Beats: lol.

sources and amps: everything sounded good to me, but I don't recall using anything outside of the usual good HeadAmp, HeadRoom, DIY stuff. Lots of nice upstream components at the meet.

    I also expect cetoole's C-2C impressions... lucky bastard :P
