  1. AKG 340's....by this you are referring to the K340 from the 80's electrostatic (actually really just a mini electret tweeter) dynamic headphone, right?

Maybe something was wrong with your 313 (which is essentially an Xh with a bigger transformer), but I would no way in hell say a K340 is better then a 303/404 + SRM-313 (Xh) combo. Not to mention the 340's suffer from a lot of imbalance issues (have a K340 with imbalance in the upper mids, Tyll's measurements on 2 pairs on Innerfidelity also proves my point. Most probably the electret tweeter is losing it's charge).

I'm interested in your choke mod.

  2.

Wait, what?  I might have read that too quickly, but I discerned that two pieces of crap cancelled each other out.  What'd I do wrong?

    Nada. The EF2 + HD800 combo was *insert-slang-of-choice*.

Well, I have some Raythen 6AK5 tubes in it, and with the Pico DAC and HD800 it sounded better than any other <$250 amp with the HD800. YMMV.

For <$250 M-Stage + HD800 is pretty hard to beat.

  3.

A HiFiMan EF2 is even cheaper but pairs fairly well with HD800 for a warm romantic euphonic sound, although with less power. But it's DAC is not good enough to show what HD800 can do, and it needs to be paired with a much better DAC.

What? I found the EF2 to be a piece of crap that didn't pair well with anything except the AD700's which is also crap.

  4. There's plenty of meets or even a loan program I think Justin had going around for the HD800's (could be wrong), give yourself a listen and decide whether you like it or not.

The Glass Jar Audio kit is far from boutique, I'll most likely be using some Blackgates, NOS Russian films or PIO's for the 1uf 63v's. The Vishay Dale RN55's are as good as you can get for resistors/price. I'm not going to spend a stupid amount on Shinkoh tantalums when they don't have any benefits over the Dales.

  5. That's news to me as i've read many comparisons between the B22 & GS-X saying the B22 was more musical and bass heavy (colored). But if it's bright as you say, that'll mean the GS-X would be even brighter (If those statements were true). if that's the case, how can people prefer them so much with HD800's? Was the B22 you listened to a 3-channel (stereo) or 4-channel (balanced)? I can make one myself within a month or so, so that option seemed much easier to me than waiting for a GS-X MK2.

Justin over at HeadAmp haven't replied to me yet regarding how long it'll take to make, so that's another concern.

Sadly I can't go for the Woo Audio WA22 nor DNA Stratus. I need the amplifier to have balanced pre-outs for my powered Adam A7X's monitors. Not too keen on tube amps either.  ::)

Rolling tubes just annoy the heck out of me. Same thing with rolling OP-AMPS.  :sherwood:

So far between the HD800 & LCD-2 i have at hand, the LCD-2 definitely sounds better with Schiit Equipment. It's so hard to find a dark/warm solid state amp with so many mixed information everywhere!  ???

Not looking for anything over $3000 as i'll still have to pick up a Matrix Audio X-Sabre DAC.

I haven't heard the GSX so I cannot comment on how it sounds but from the amassed reviews and impressions over on the other site, only 2 users have reported the GSX-MK2 + HD800 pairing sounding bright, but those 2 users don't like the HD800's sound itself anyway. I've owned the HD800's 3 times over the past 3 years, I've tested them on my own built passive, active and balanced b22 builds (currently building another balanced "boutique version" b22 for myself) and few other b22 builds I purchased one for myself and auditioned (built by other owners). They all sounded roughly the same to me being bright with the b22. The b22 sounds great with the LCD2's however, as does the Mojo but it's not surprise the neutrality of the two amp's balance it out with the LCD2's laid back warm sound signature.

As with tube rolling and opamp rolling, don't bother with the many idiots on head-fi posting night and day differences with dropping what ever tube fits in the tube socket. Same with opamp rolling, the differences are not big. Stick with one set or nice tubes and stay with it, you don't need to tube roll every single time you listen to one particular genre or choose to listen to one particular headphone.

  6. Been trying the HD800 lately with solid state amps from Schiit but ended up getting very harsh and excessive brightness. Sounds too analytically and the bass is really lacking, overall music is not so musical. I recommend these with darker sounding solid state amps (which are hard to find), or tube amps such as Woo Audio WA22 or DNA Stratus 2A3.

Currently trying to obtain a HeadAmp GS-X MK2 or AMB Beta 22 to see if solid state can be sufficient enough for these phones, otherwise i'll really have to switch over to tubes.

While I couldn't live with the b22+HD800's (too bright) the Stratus was very nice with the HD800 but not $3.5k nice. The WA22 on the other hand is overpriced for what it does and I found my Crack + HD800 pairing better. If you want nice tubes with HD800 look at the Manley Neo Classic 300B or a Stingray, great stuff bit on the expensive side but come up now and then for 50-60% of it's RRP on the used market, Canuckaudio, a'gon and sometimes ebay.

  7. I have tried the HD800's when I had then with old vintage amplifiers, few Sansui, Marantz and Kenwood they made the HD800's to closed in and romantic sounding (too warm) and took too much of the HD800's good traits away (clarity and detail).

  8. Don't second user Orpheus with amp rigs go for $30k or so now?

No? The only person selling used Orpheus systems for $25k+ is wiktor.

The drivers are actually very different in size with the HE90 having a surface area that's roughly 50% larger.

Sounds about right, remember that thread wiktor made on h-fi when he made a custom baffle to secure a transplanted HE60 driver into his spare HE90 enclosure? I was surprised the driver assembly was held down to the baffle by 4 rods and 1 big elastic rubber.

  9. Sennheiser probably looked at that idiot from Poland's ebay Orpheus ads for $40k and went by that...

Oh you mean wiktor? He has had trouble selling some of his sets over the past 4 years at the prices he is asking.

You know I may shoot him a message and ask what's the deal with him owning like multiple pairs of all the most high end headphones ever made.

I prefer it if the next gen Orpheus be priced at $20k, at least something I can afford straightaway unless I get hitched then shit buh-bye headphones.

The other question is, how many will Justin grab onto as stock? And will there be an Aristeus 2 if the bias is different and demand for it.

  10. I'd use kapton tape to provide an extra layer of insulation between the 450v caps and the PCB itself as one of the guys here had there's short to ground.

Yes caps blowing up is a spectacle to behold.

Btw that toroidy looks pretty big, what's the dimensions?

  11. It's a good thing your other hand was not resting on anything metal or conductive. Heard about a guy who use to repair old tube TV's from my tube supplier/amp builder, bloke had 1 hand on a nearby metal chassis and the other probing lethal voltages till the power arced across his hands and finger tips. He still rocking but the damage was severe enough to have damaged the nerves in his right arm. Lethal voltages beaware.

  12. Is alcohol ok to clean a diaphragm? I've got 2 more SR-3/New SR-3 with imbalance and no sound output problem, the diaphragm from one of them was kind of dirty but I re-coated it anyway. Sound output ok but kind of distorts on the low end if I put the volume up to high. Remember reading from the esl thread on the other site wachara mentioned cleaning with acetone or alcohol.

@spritzer, I've got a SRM-3 heading my way and the board it uses is basically my Xh, what do I have to do to give it balanced input like you did with your Xh with lemo connectors?

Since the SRM-3 has space and using a better ps then the wallwart can it be rebuilt to provide a higher output power (think its 250-300v stock)?
