  1. What did -=she=- recable it with?

    Braided SPC. :palm:

The SR-Lambda Earspeakers have been recabled. I used 600V, 19 strand Silver Plated Copper coated in Teflon wire done in a flat braid. The cable is covered in the woven expandable sleeving, so it is opaque black. The leads are done in a woven nylon cloth sleeving for extremely low microphonics and feel. The cables leads are secured with molded plastic for security. The Stax connector is internally secured with molded plastic to provide an easy, sure grip. The cable leads are in fact the same length on the heatshrink - it just looks uneven because of the angles.

I always wonder how the heck he (NP) gets the C/W numbers he does out of that profile.. just defies all common sense.

No idea, as it wouldnt get nearly the chimney effect of the more traditional vertical profiles. Sure looks purdy though, from all the pictures I have seen, though I have never been near an actual Pass amp. Not sure how hot they run.

  2. Very, very nice Justin. Kinda reminds me of a Pass amp (which is a good thing) with tubes, looking at that heatsink profile.

Tracking says the Lambdas are in my county and expected to arrive at my house tomorrow.

So, have people seen the SR-Lambda -=she=- posted F/S? :palm: I cant imagine what that recable did to the treble, though I guess it probably isnt quite as bad on a normal bias, as the plate spacing is closer, so impedance should be a good bit lower.

  3. I'm not sure I'm quite as enthusiastic as Colin regarding the ESP-950s. While when properly amped (I heard them out of the BHSE and SRD7) I would say I liked them at least as much as the HD-650s I thought they were pretty mediocre out of the stock energizer.

I guess it is a good thing then that you were relieved of your old pair, and that they are instead sitting here. New amp (and headphones) to arrive Friday, if tracking is to be trusted.

  4. ESP/950 v. HD650? Not even a question here, though I sold my HD650 years ago, because I preferred my HD580. The ESP/950, even with the stock energizer, completely blow the HD580 out of the water for me. Of course, soundstage isnt something I highly value, largely on account of my music not having much of a soundstage to speak of.

  5. And you can loan me the srm once you build your amp :)

    {Puts Audio Alternative on speed dial}

FYI, this was a private person who set the price, not Audio Alternative. They just handled the transaction and shipping.

Nope, the SR-Lambda is simply better as it doesn't have the midrange recession and the uneven bass and treble of the Pro's. ;D

You cant tell me my ears are supposed to be as against the stators (or rather, stator condom) as they were on the Lambda Pro, while I was good on the Lambda. I didnt have enough time on either to characterize the sound other than "I think I like this one moar, the mids are tastier".

Sooo, got SRM-1/mk2 schematics? Is their a stax and koss amp schematic repository anywhere?

  6. Handed in my application for employment to the HCPD. Man, that was a long, boring form, though I have filled out similar before. At least this one didnt ask me to list the times I had had sex with animals not of the Homo sapiens variety, like State did.

  7. I'd say it depends on the condition it arrives in :)

I have been told (for what thats worth) that it is in excellent working condition, and the audio company I actually bought it from, Audio Alternative in Fort Collins, CO, shipped it today double boxed, insured, and with tracking UPS ground. I do hope the pads are in decent shape, as the last Lambda Pro I heard, while good, was outclassed (slightly) by a SR-Lambda, and I suspect that at least some of this is because the Lambda pads were in better condition and sealed properly for me, while the Pro pads didnt quite.

  8. Yeah I agree with the new pads totally based on the pics. How much would the pads cost anyway?

Whoa another one just came up:

FS: Stax SR-Lambda (normal bias) - Head-Fi: Covering Headphones, Earphones and Portable Audio

How does the normal bias one compare with the pro bias one?

I heard that pair just last week over at Justin's house, and to me, I think I actually would give them an edge over the Lambda Pros he had there. That said, I did get a better seal with the regular bias Lambdas, so that could have played a role.

  9. Or maybe it was the ~5mm of thick wool and cashmere felt I have damping that driver. ;)

We never said orthos were anything extra special stock (except the T50v1). I can also confirm that the T50rp from American Musical Supply is the new version.

  10. Yup, placed an order shortly after I got back from your place. Now to wait for them to arrive. Brought the HP-1 in to work today though. You are right though, there is definitely plenty of room to play around with damping, though they still sound quite good stock. Those drivers sure are little bass monsters.

  11. I listened to a pair of T50rp yesterday, and they really are quite good. Good enough that I ordered a pair when I got home. They had a reflex dot, felt against the vents I think, and a little bit of chassis damping, and were quite bassy, and it went nice and low. I was suspecting that thin craft felt would be about what I want in the way of damping, though we didnt really mess around with it at all. Maybe more. I will see when they arrive.

  12. Hey Nate, glad to see you joining us orthoists, hope the T50RP work out for you. Those are probably next on my list to buy.

Their's planars, of course they are hard to drive. :) The original T-50 makes most amps cry...

    And burn...

And that's what fools so many. Based on specs the Donuts should also be easy to drive, but they're near as difficult as K1000s.

    The Donuts had specs?

  13. Fugly, sez I. I will just stick with these ESP/950, at least for a bit. At least we all know I wont be going down Mike's route, swapping gear around each week, or at least, not until I become rich and famous in my chosen profession.

  14. Pretty sure the T30 will need to be tweaked, so felt will be your friend very shortly. Also, they are not common enough I think for there to be many mods yet that are completely worked out, so expect to have to experiment a bit. All 6 of my orthos have needed the damping modified quite a bit to sound ideal, though I havnt heard a T30, or anything with that type ortho driver.

Guzziguy, nice knife, I EDC a BM555, which is basically the same thing, but a bit different blade profile, and not black.

Mike, It was mainly the typical office stuff I wanted it for, just felt like trying a wireless, and wanted something a bit nicer than the stock dell keyboards we have on everything else. Ended up replacing it with some older stuff I had at home on other rigs, and am much happier.
