  1. Well my black D02 arrived yesterday, I picked it up at the post office on the way home from work. Unfortunately I had to go to my in-laws for supper so I didn't get to listen right away but I did open the box to get a look. Boy, this is one stunning piece of equipment, the case work is just incredible, pictures just don't do it justice. This is the type of case you would find on multi-kilobuck gear not something that sells in the $500 range. Another unfortunate occurence was customs opened the box and it appears they didn't repack it very well so the bottom back corners suffered some damage, nothing too serious just a bit disappointing.

When I finally got my new baby home and plugged in I was greeted with a sound that was different than I was expecting. Because it uses the same DAC chips as my Dialogue II I had figured they would sound very similar and yes, in some ways there's a resemblance but they seem quite different as well. The Dialogue II has an almost rich tube-like character in that it has a somewhat warm, smooth midrage and highs, bass has decent weight but is a bit round, detail is good but this DAC's strength is it's musicality. By contrast, and take this with a grain of salt because I've only listened for a couple of hours, I wouldn't characterize the D02 as either warm or cool, it gets the timbre of instruments right without overdoing it. Transparency and resolution are better. Highs are excellent but I haven't as yet got a handle on whether they're more extended than the Dialogue II, they definately seem even cleaner and clearer though. Bass on the D02 is pretty spectacular, tight well defined and deep with lots of weight. I did notice almost right away what others have mentioned regarding a somewhat narrow soundstage but I think it was starting to expand a bit after a few hours listening. Although the stage is narrower the D02 seems airier and instruments have more of their own space. The Dialogue II has a nice relaxing flow to music whereas the D02 seems lither, quicker on it's feet with better PRaT but PRaT might not be quite at the level I remember the MiniMax having.

Again, this only initial impressions and subject to change as I acclimate myself to the sound and the DAC itself burns in more but if my initial impressions hold or even improve I'll be one happy camper.

  2. Thanks. That seems to be $475 new. Might be a nice way to get a bit of tubeyness. What about simple non-os DAC's like the Dialogue II?

I think the Dialogue II is a pretty decent DAC for it's price, it has a smooth, full sound that is just on the warm side of things, it has decent detail retrieval and the build quality is decent for the price. On the flip side, although I've not noticed it with the RS-1's it can exhibit a bit of noise which I noticed with the E500's this past weekend. One of my gripes with my system right now is a slightly bloated bass that lacks a bit of definition that I've had in the past, sorta like when HD6x0's are underpowered. I've been trying to track it down and I think it's a combination of things, the transport, IC's and the DAC. The Dialogue II uses a single TDA1543 with a passive I/V stage so I'm suspecting that it might be lacking a bit of "juice" in the output stage.

For the most part I really like the sound from the Dialogue II though so with my initial foray into upgrading it I decided I wanted to try to not stray too far from that signature but try to find something that would address my concerns. I looked at different options and in the end I've decided to give a Storm Digital D02 a try. It looks to use a higher quality of parts, chassis if far superior, it also uses a rather innovative battery/AC scheme which should address noise issues. The DAC itself is still TDA1543 based with a passive I/V but instead of using a single DAC chip it uses 8 in parallel for increased output and linearity. The hope here is that I get better resolution, less noise and a more dynamic sound while still maintaining a smooth, non-fatiguing slightly warm sound. My D02 should be here this week or maybe early next so I'll post some impressions when I get some time with it.

  3. FUnny you should say that..first off to the fullest of my actual knowledge Ray did not go to Sarjan..most likely someone named out of the three people would be my guess who did..but I actually have no proof of any. But I do know Sarjan note that was made around the time of the singlepower pic post I made (regretfully, yes I said I was sorry to Mikhail's face without lie). I got a p.m. threw head-fi from Angel Teres saying that Sarjan made a public post and had a link...which I then phoned Ray and told him. I sent him the p.m. and after he read the link on the phone he said "omg Belly..." of course he followed up with a few ha ha's..but that's the best of Ray going anywhere to Sarjan.

Before the MPX3 review was even posted I was talking with someone independant of the situation but who has some contacts within the industry, he told me that Ray and Tuberoller had contacted Srajan badmouthing he and his amps. After the review was posted and the blow up on Head-Fi as you noted Srajan posted a note in the Letters column of 6Moons, here's a line from that note "Having first rejected these claims as attempts by a competitor to discredit SinglePower..." Given that to my knowledege no other competitor was out to discredit Singlepower and the independant information about Ray and Tuberoller contacting Srajan I was provided with before the review was even posted it seems pretty safe to assume the competitor Srajan is refering to is actually Ray.

You like to make yourself seem like such an innocent in all this when it's you who stirred the pot in the first place. It was you who initially posted a bunch of BS on Audio Circles that started a big war of words which proceeded the amp wars on Head-Fi which by the way made you like a complete fool because you were posting BS about amps you hadn't even heard. I would have thought you would have learned something from that but no you then went on to post the internal pics on Head-Fi which sparked the "amp wars". You've done nothing but try to manipulate the situation to your and Rays favor and to make people like Earl and Mikhail look bad so excuse me if I have a hard time believing you aren't a shill and that you've really meant no harm. No, you're not innocent in all this you're just a tool, a tool in every sense of the word.

Honestly you showed who you are rite here rite infront of the boards...Putting people down and calling names only shows so much little of the person doing the name calling. but thanks for the compliment of being called the "biggest"...of something (hell I will take anything these days).

Now ain't that just the pot calling the kettle black. Sorry if the truth hurts. ::)

  4. I was growing my hair long in 1992 I think it was. It ended up not growing out well because it had been thinned so there was some long some quite short so I decided to shave it off and start over on growing it out. It's been pretty much shaved ever since, anytime I try to grow it out it gets to a certain length (about an inch) and it drives me absolutely insane so I shave it off again.

  5. Ray will never even think to compete with Mikhail. Ray and Mikhail are two different types of people running two totally different companies marketed towards two totally different people.

If Ray never thought to compete with Mikhail then why has he so adamantly tried to put him out of business? Why did he go to Srajan of 6Moons badmouthing Mikhail and his designs? I've heard numerous stories from various members about Ray's tirades about Mikhail. If Ray isn't trying to compete with Mikahail then why does he seem to care so much about him and his company?

Billy, I just have to say, you have got to be the biggest numbnut to ever hit the headphone forums. Seriously, do you think anyone who was around during the "amp wars" believes any of your bullshit? You yourself were instrumental in stoking the fire and starting much of the shit and in addition to Tuberoller and Ray I lay much of the blame for the state of affairs at your feet.

  6. i can tell you the exactomundo price - 150 for the unit, 250 for the mods! but that might not be reflective of prices for mods elsewhere - it seems everyone does a little something different to their units and costs for parts and labor fluctuate based on that of course. again, i'm not a diy guy, but i think mine had the opamp output stage bypassed, and it's passive now with just caps in the chain - i think that's the big thing. the rest are parts upgrades and such to clean up the power, among other things.

I wonder if there will be any comparisons of the DAC-ah with the Storm Digital D02? The D02 has a similar design, 8 TDA1543's in parallel but seemingly uses higher quality parts, has a passive I/V (no opamps simply a resistor much like the mods that are done to the DAC-ah to bypass it's opamp stage) chassis is absolutely to die for and it uses battery or AC power. All this for approx. $412 + shipping (weighs in at 11kg so shipping from China to the US is going to run upwards of $100).

  7. Which suggests to me that you are not part of their core market. I don't mean that in a rude way, it's just that if the things on the list are of no interest to you, then you are looking for them to enter a different market in which you would hold more interest. The gist of what I was saying was that it's difficult to expand without compromising your core market.

I don't know what amps you use, but are any of the made by HeadRoom?

No I don't use Headroom amps but that's not to say I wouldn't try or use them so I don't think whether I use or don't use them at this point in time has all that has much bearing on it.
  8. Sorry to be boring, but just because one can make a product doesn't mean one should...

It doesn't mean they shouldn't either. I'd rather see a small class D power amp like Dusty Chalk suggested moreso than most of the things you list. I'm not saying Headroom should do one I'm just saying from a personal perspective it's something I'd be more interested in than your suggestions.
  9. Sorry guys I was trying to show you a new exeptionally good amp, and another option for the balanced lovers, (and for the unbalanced also) but if you prefer to live in the dark, it is up to you...I suggest the administrator to remove the whole thread then....I have enough with other "similar sites" already...

I thought that we may have more freedom here, but it seems that it is the same here, and that any piece of technology in order to be good, has to come from the usual manufacturers, same to have the acceptation from the audience......my bad!!! Sorry..... :mikey2: :mikey2: :mikey2:

Christ almighty, stop being such a baby. One comment about some rather large text on the face plate and a question regarding the reasons behind the amp being balanced when it seemingly goes against the grain of the designers philosophies and your whining about freedom to post? What do you want everyone to jump on your bandwagon with you just because you post a couple of pics?
  10. When you place the order for yours, I promise to remove the cheese looking for you... ::) ::)::)

Don't give me that eye roll sov, you quoted my original comment about the text and then went off about how you'd heard all the Rudi amps etc... Obviously you were addressing someone else which is what I was pointing out.

If you don't want to hear comments about the looks of your precious amps then maybe you shouldn't post the pics in the first place.

  11. Well FYI, I have heard all the rudistor amps, with the exception of the electrostatics and the one Nik had that was designed for the Qualia (and of course this one is also new) and all I can tell you is that I expect that IT WILL SOUND OWESOME TOO, and that's for sure.....If you have heard any Rudistor amp, you know that Rudi never bullshit while designing audio stuff.....but anyway, if you read again I wrote "owesome", but I said absolutelly nothing about how it sounds like, as I have not heard it...but I will do, as soon as I heard it....pretty soon, and yes it will be at the meeting in NYC, it was specially design for that purpose, so guys you can prepare your balanced headphones to try it....you are welcome to hook whatever you have there......

I will add more info about the topology, circuit, tubes used etc...as soon as I get home...

What does that have to do with the big cheesy looking RP1000 text on the front? ???
  12. I think if you were to do child forums it would be necessary for the manufacturer to request it themselves and maybe that they have a certain level of participation in forums before they're allowed a child forum. I got the impression iPod Studio just creates a forum for manufacturers if they become members.

  13. One of the ideas about this particular subject thats been floating around in my head is to create a manufacturer forum, and give each manufacturer their own child forum underneath that. Manufacturers could use this to announce new products or answer questions about current products that members want to ask. My only concern is that if the manufacturers don't participate in their own child forum the whole idea becomes some what of a waste of time.

Sounds much like how Audio Circles is setup. If the manufacturer asks for a forum I would think they would be inclined to participate.
  14. I think this offers a reasonable solution.

The worst case would be to not allow manufacturers to post about their products at all, much like that other forum. IMO that only encourages the "shilling" and personally I'd rather have the manufacturer post and know who is actually posting than any sort of covert promotion.

  15. rega planet 2000 is one of the best matches with rs-1, but i'm guessing you're looking for something more 'hi-fi'. i went from cary cd-303/200 to krell kav-300cd. the krell and rs1 with gilmore played together real nice. cary is better suited for senn hd600. i will be selling the krell later if you are interested, i'm making a switch to computer based transport so i need a dac.

linn ikemi is another good one. i'd like to audition a naim source one of these days...

I owned a Planet 2K awhile back, it was an ok source that wass fairly listenable but did have it's issues. The 2K is also top loading which due to some serious space considerations wouldn't be feasible for me.

My budget for a straight DAC is in the $500 range but for an all-in-one source/headamp solution like the Lavry would be more along the lines of $1100.

  16. Alright, so I'm still debating my next source upgrade, I had pretty much decided on a Storm Digital D02 (or baby D02 depending on whether I feel my shelf can handle the over 20 lbs of the regular D02) to be paired up with my Headamp GS-1 but in the past couple of days I've been reading more about people using the balanced outputs of the Lavry DA10 and I've also been reading more about the benefits of recabled, balanced headphones which has brought the DA10 back into consideration.

I expect the D02 + GS-1 combo would give me a similar but improved sound over what I have now and because of the GS-1's versatility it would give me a very flexible system that can easily be used in my speaker system and give me some flexibility in that system as well.

The Lavry on the other hand seems like a nifty all-in-one solution that I expect will sound even better when considering usage with balanced RS-1's but there are a couple problems I see with going this route. First is quite a bit less flexibility because I would have to sell the GS-1 in order to afford the DA10. The DA10 can still be used as a preamp but if I use the balanced outputs for my headphones then I would have to look into some sort of switchbox idea if I wanted to use the DAC in my speaker system as well. The other problem I see, and maybe it's not really a problem, is it seems almost like an end of the road solution. By recabling the RS-1's I'm pretty much locked into balanced operation but considering most of my audio money would be sunk into that one piece of gear and my wife and I are on a very tight budget it's unlikely I would be able to save up enough for a seperate balanced amp anytime soon. This is where the D02 + GS-1 solution is again more flexible, I can change things up fairly simply by swapping things like cables and component upgrades themselves would be easier because I can sell the old component to help finance the new one whereas if I wanted to add on a seperate balanced amp to the Lavry I would have to start saving from scratch which would be a very daunting task for me to do at this point but then the Lavry on it's own does seem to offer a fairly reasonably priced (considering what other balanced systems seem to go for) way of getting into the balanced headphones game.

If I knew how much better the Lavry would sound, especially running balanced, it might make the decision easier but I don't so I'm left weighing pro's and con's on paper and asking advice from more experienced users. So have at it, any thoughts, advise, recommendations, etc. are appreciated.
