shielding tubes from instantaneous overloads?

I got a snip from wiki about valve (tube) amplifier that made me curious:

The Soviets retained valves to a much greater extent than the west during the cold war, for the majority of their communications and military amplification requirements, in part due to tubes' ability to withstand instantaneous overloads (notably due to a nuclear detonation) that would destroy a transistor.

SO...what would protect my rig from a nuclear blast? A giant lead fridge? ...seemed to work for Indiana Jones.
